The first time I went over that bridge I stayed in the grated steel lane. Good way to break your fear of squirrelly tire movement. With the added bonus of high winds its almost like a circus ride!
My buddy and I crossed the bridge in 2004. The temp was in the low teens. We were traveling to the AMA National Ice Racing Championships! We were on 650cc dual-sports.
You crack me up! I said the exact same thing when I got to the toll booth. I only have 2 wheels! Hilarious! (Actually I'm pretty sure I say that at ever toll both no matter what the cost)
In your haste to escape the arrival of hot weather in Alabama, you may have fled north too fast and are back in the cold and the wet. The Upper Peninsula looks awesome. Never been. I may go there some summer to escape the sweltering summer heat if the camping is as good as it looks. I camped in upper Wisconsin in the 1970s and the mosquitoes and.biting flies would take shifts throughout the day tormenting us. I recall an after dark bathroom sprint that nearly caused anemia. The screening on the tent was a thick alive gray mass of ravenous mosquitoes. I sprinted as fast as I could with them in pursuit. As I was taking care of business I was being consumed alive. It was like a science fiction horror movie. I swiped my hands down each arm and they were instantly drenched in my own blood with hundreds of squashed mosquito bodies. I was on a ten day canoe trip, and the leaches were a horror show too. Every portage was like Bogart in The Africa Queen, covered in leaches. I do not like bridge grating on two wheels. Some tread patterns are worse than others. The more off road capable a tire is, the worse it seems to be on steel grating. Thanks as always for sharing your adventure. I really look forward to these.
That's one beautiful, but long ass bridge. Think the wind is always blowing. That camp fire looked a bit squirrelly. Kind of like it might have been made by Big Foot.
Bike went down on the Mac last yr, rider didn't survive. The Zilwaukee Bridge over the Saginaw River used to be 2lanes of grate each way, it was no fun to cross either.
