Born in East Harlem in 1955, moved to The North Bronx at 11, moved to San Diego in 1974 found a quiet little town 50 miles east of the coast and still spend time in that little town. 2018 was the end of a 30 year stint as a charter fishing cook, deckhand, second captain and ended as owner-operator. Was blessed to find a packing outfit that took me on as a camp cook at the edge of private and public lands at Bridger Teton National Forest along the Green River. Spectacular is the only way to describe the people and places. Was fortunate to witness a couple of years to The Drift.

Lucky me! Fortunate to ride the Green River Roundup in 1983. I was the only girl, back then. I'm 67 now, and it remains one of my proudest & grandest memories! God Bless Wyoming and keep her Wild!

Watching that makes me glad that my family only drives our cattle four miles from summer pasture to winter pasture. But my wife's family, well, I married into one of the eleven families that still participate in the Green River Drift. I hope I'm able to take time off someday, and join the spring cattle drive, then spend a couple weeks riding the trails in the Wind River Mountains afterward!

My great grandfather was a cowboy who drove cattle from Texas through Oklahoma and beyond. He’s in the Cowboy Hall of Fame. He taught my Dad to ride…bareback first. My great grandmother was Chickasaw. The story goes he road past her family’s ranch and supposedly told his friend “I’m going to marry that pretty little Indian gal.” It seems to run in the family. My mother was a majorette in San Antonio. My Dad saw her and said to his friend “I’m going to marry that beautiful girl.”

@@henrimatisse7481 Grazing arid lands is essentially using solar power to create protein. You heard them, grass all year round, a natural diet, on land ill-suited to grow crops for human consumption. They're obviously using some diesel for their trucks and tractors, but this isn't a CAFO where corn is being grown with ammonia hundreds of miles from where the cattle are wallowing in filth. There is room for some amount of meat consumption, even if it's only raised on wasted food and arid land. Besides, we'll self destruct in plastic and carcinogens long before a few families with a few hundred head of cattle do in the earth. You're missing the forest for the trees here.
@waynenoll1967

Cattle actually improve the land by aeration and fertilization. Beef is one of the best things that humans can eat. Doctors are actually discovering that the carnivore diet is the healthiest diet for humans. In the last few decades, since the food industry has been selling the public their propaganda about eating vegetables and low fat, heart disease has quadrupled. Carbs, seed oils, and sugar are killing people. Eat meat!

How sad, the famous nostalgia of so many Beloved classic movies of the last 75 yrs., and the FAMilies left -so few who still barely hold the land. Time and Change is not a [mother] any more than nature is a 'mother' to any of us. Good thing no one really lives that long-- or at least those who may be vulnerable to heartbreak-- from change. I humbly salute the Americans-- both Native and other, of the western 1800s.

The railroads put an end of those big cattle drives of yore. Aside from making cattle drives as a concept redundant (being able to just deliver those cattle from the ranches themselves instead of going to the nearest railroad yard once the tracks are laid), the arrival of settlers narrowed down where they can go through; range wars between farmers and ranchers are a thing during the later years of the US frontier...

If we used the Indians as our friends, our teachers, "settlers" that took the property wouldn't have the loss, the hard times they faced. P.s. Not knocking these hardworking women & men. Most of American society has turned our culture toward a future of "less". It seems to me that we have less respect for the open range and high mountain valleys that provide space to free our souls, as well as to provide nourishment for traditional sources of food. We have less respect for moderation in work and play. We have less time to commune with fellow wild creatures who barely remain alive. These hard-working people have not lost their roots. When your roots are lost, erosion of the spirit is sure to follow. God help us.

I sold the calves last year for 16k and it doesn't cost that much to take care of them. So see what a woman, I love her so much.even though she is my exs grandmother',I knew her 10 years before I met my ex 25 years ago. And how she make 16k and this chuck makes 50 hmmmm. God bless

I sure hope this "lifestyle" will end soon. In some ways ranchers are good for wildlife since the land the rancher consumes is often shared but only with non predators. The US Fish and Wildlife takes their federally funded role in killing coyotes and not protecting endangered wolves when they prey on a weak cow or calf for food. It's obscene that an animal from Briton takes over the southwest especially at the cost of federal funds in predator control and grazing fees
