The term "riding the bevel" is heard often in woodturning. In this video, I will explain this term and demonstrate how to ride the bowl gouge bevel while turning a wood bowl blank.
Once you understand riding the bevel, and with some practice, this woodturning technique will become second nature.

A little background .. I took a turning class last year and the instructor was exceptionally good. However I was called away an hour before class was done to respond to a flood in my town. After 20 hours and 63 rescues later I made it back to my shop and found every tool was underwater and the building had to be torn down. I’ve since rebuilt in higher location but the knowledge didn’t stay with me from the class. I want to thank you for what you have done here. For without your videos I probably wouldn’t be able to start turning. Your style is perfect and it has made a difference in my life thanks .

G'day Kent. Thanks for this video teaching about riding the bevel. now I know why I get lots of lines and how to correct this. I have recently bought 2 bowl gouges and have bought a tormek sharpening center which is near the lathe. I am so glad I bought a cover for it as I get shavings all over it. It has a water cooled stone and also I am learning how to use it too, also I now know why they put a packet of band aids in the parcel when it comes. I learned to never touch the blades just after sharpening. You are a fantastic teacher of this craft and I appreciate what you are doing very much. I hope you do well with your channel and I wish you all the very best possible with it.

I took shop and woodworking in school a long time ago and I can’t believe my memory has done. When I first started back into turning, the very first time I caught this channel and saw Kent, I really thought he was my “back in the day” woodworking teacher! My shop teachers name was Mr.Abee. If these two were standing together, you would think they were brothers, if not twins. Crazy huh? As I got to thinking about it, being that I’m 50yrs old and that would have made him oh, idk, around 90+yrs old….lol. Anyway, as I began to get into turning again, damn near EVERYTHING I had learned 35yrs ago, give or take, kept coming back like I was sitting in class that very moment. I know there are times I can’t remember where I put my car keys or even the job location I was at the day before!? So for me to slip right back in time, memories were feeling more like starting from scratch. I too agree with a lot of people that talk about how they love Kents way of explaining things with great details in order to really learn quickly and efficiently. This tutorial about using the gouges properly were spot on and detailed. It started coming back to me and I think I may have understood the subject matter better than my days of shop in school. There were also some things I wasn’t familiar about and picked up that knowledge and was able to fully understand and was able to remember those new things due to the detailed teaching he is able to give you. Being all that said, I recommend anyone, on any subject, at any level of woodworking you may be. If you are serious about wood turning and need that “ next level “ teachings, again on any level and subject matter. This IS THE BEST channel related to wood turning you will ever need……PERIOD !

Very informative! I have a bowl gouge and made a platter/bowl out of some 8/4 maple. I had trouble getting it to cut smoothly. I think it was a combination of needing to sharpen, and bad technique. I mostly turn pens so didn’t have the correct techniques for a bowl gouge. Once it’s warm again, I’ll get back out there and try to make a bowl now that I know how to properly “ride the bevel”. Your videos are awesome btw!

I have been turning for about a year having learned from a book and my limited experience at school 60 years ago. I learned to ride the bevel for spindles and skews but sort of learned it for bowls. This was a revelation to me that I had almost been doing it right. Practiced today hollowing a bowl and wonders - it worked. All those snatches gone. Never too old to learn, this old dog can learn new tricks.

excellent vid, maybe you can demonstrate how to ride that bevel when creating more complicated shapes. I know turning is a skill and it takes time for a shaky hands to calm down and make a nice clean cut....:)

I am learning a lot, and with lots of clarity eventually. I am very grateful for this. I would love a video or resource about angles. This is to say about what bevel angle is right for what application or project. Thanks for your teaching.

I have been turning for over 4 years and this is the first time I've understood "riding the bevel". Thank you. Now, I have to practice. I have 2 requests: (1) how 'bout a video on "riding the bevel" while carving out the inside of a bowl...this is tough for me. (2) I have difficulty removing tenons....maybe a video on that?

Thanks, Steve. Watch this video, I show how I like to work the bowl inside ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m4540LiW_4s.html and stay tuned because I have a tenon removal video coming soon.

I just found out that you can use this concept to perfectly slice tomatoes. You just get a quarter inch or so of the cut started then press the side of the knife against the tomato that won’t be a slice. Amazing.
