always thought those 5 section cloaks were interesting. in a way, its kind of like a poncho, but more configurable. interesting that they went out of style while ponchos are still worn.

Ponchos are relatively easy to produce, riding cloaks could have 200 buttons. So that could not have helped to keep there production cost down. (They do make for a good blanket during a living history event) I do expect that the Dutchcoat i mention developed into the justacorps/frogcoat, or atleast its where the cuffs could come from.

@@AllemansendRe-enactment I tried my best to get as close to the Ernst Casimir example as possible, save for the colours. I ended up with 10 buttons fewer than the original, namely; 217 (the original having 227).

@@AllemansendRe-enactment that makes sense. though its still weird that its not a thing anymore with machine manufacturing and all. though ponchos do seem like an overall easier thing to manufacture.

@@AllemansendRe-enactment Ha! Well, all edges of mine are covered in linen tape, so not to worry there. If any of you are up in Groningen in August, I'll be up there with the folks from Grolle.

I am curious where could one obtain good quality 17th century clothing like shown in the video?

The cloak is from matuls.pl The doublet and shirt are hand made. I dont know where the pants and socks are from. And i beleave the shoes come from re-enactment-shoes.co.uk But i would always recommend to find a group that do a time period and impression that you are interested in. They can help you to find makers and sellers or help you to make your own kit that is suiteble for your inpression.

Do you happen to have any documentations about regiments being issued 1 or 2 cloaks (@1:20)? I'm quite interested in that topic as we usually do night watch/guard duties

I could not name the source, its in a particular book belonging to Tom Vanuytsel of Spiesdreagers 1625 and VKVB. I have asked if he can look it up, but incase we forget to respond later on you wil not get the inpression that your question is ignored.
