Once again, I'm back at Automobile Driving Museum to take a ride in 4 classic cars! In this one, I go for a ride in a beautiful 1952 Kaiser Manhattan, almost identical to the 1951 model. I've always loved these old Kaisers. These cars are very beautiful. Overcast weather today!

Brings back beautiful memories 💖. My dad loved Kaisers and at one time had 2, a maroon one and a dark green one sitting in our yard just past the end of our driveway. I loved the heart shaped windows 💖. Daddy died suddenly 3 weeks after his 50th birthday in 1962 of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. I was only 12. Mom had to sell the cars after his sudden death. Thank you for the memories 💖.

My family car when I was a kid. Kaisers were underrated.

Nothing better than a ride through El Segundo in a 1952 Kaiser Manhattan in the morning.

Most people have never even heard of a Kaiser, let alone seen one. However my father actually owned one of these cars when I was kid. He thought it was a great car. My father was building a house at the time and frequently used the Kaiser to haul building materials. He ran that car hard, but it never let him down. It is interesting to note that Kaiser included a lot of features that were ahead of their time, such as the very large windows to afford better visibility to the driver (compare it with other cars of that period). Incidentally Henry J. Kaiser, who manufactured these cars, was the guy who mass-produced thousands of Liberty Ships during WW-II. In addition, during the war Kaiser also entered into a contract with the U.S. Navy to build 50 Escort Aircraft Carriers in two years, and he did it (they were known as the "Casablanca-class carriers). Unfortunately, Kaiser was not as successful when it came to competing with the "Big 3" automakers in the post-war years. Nevertheless he did come out with one other ground-breaking car, the famous "Henry-J", which was America's first economical compact car. The "Henry-J" was at least 10 years ahead of it's time. It was not until a decade later that Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler introduced comparable cars in the form of the Falcon, the Corvair and the Plymouth Valiant / Dodge Dart.

Perhaps your father's Kaiser was the "Traveler" model. It had a really unique rear that looked like a coupe but folded out with a tailgate and hatch then the rear seat folded down flat and everything had cargo tracks for hauling. Maybe the first 'SUV'. lol Great car, my neighbor had one and we borrowed it occasionally. He even made a wooden box that could be placed in such a way as to turn it into a pickup bed. I always wanted to own one when I got older but alas Kaiser disappeared by the time I was able to purchase.

Robert Guttman interesting, my uncle had a Kaiser and was also building a house in Pittsburgh, which his Kaiser was used to haul around materials

What a beautiful car. This must have been one of the first cars with a padded dash. Looks like it has plenty of headroom too. Kaiser also had a small car called the Henry J which I used to see quite often when I was a kid. Thanks for sharing this.

I knew 3 people who owned Kaisers. I even drove one of them, in 1955. The synchromesh was shot so to shift from high to second it was necessary to double clutch. The synchromesh was shot on high gear too so when shifting from second to high it was necessary to wait briefly in neutral. Whether that was a common problem I don't know.

The '51 has a divided windshield; this car has a one-piece. Probably the most handsome car of its day.

I recall seeing these as a kid in the fifties....the neighbors who owned one were looked at as "odd," because they didn't own Ford, GM or Chrysler. Owners of Nashes, Studebakers and Hudsons were also considered as odd. Actually, the Kaiser, Studebakers and Hudsons had some of the nicest styling of the early 50s

lcar4000 odd, we had neighbors that had Nash, Hudson and my uncle had a Kaiser. My family had a Ford, but we never considered them strange. They just had more money than we did

Very cool car. I’ve only seen one in my life. It was sitting at a mechanic shop for sale. ( about 2years ago). I’m old enough to remember Studebaker. And had the pleasure of detailing a 64 GT Hawk, at the Jacksonville Auto Museum.

There are changes for 1952 Kaiser automobile. They are: 1). One piece windshield, 2). Larger, teardrop taillights, and 3). Stronger, bolder front and rear bumpers. Hydra-Matic transmission is optional for $189.

The changes for 1952 Kaiser car are: 1). One piece windshield, 2). Larger taillights, 3). Heavier bumpers with larger bumper guards, and 4). Three transmission choices. 3 speed conventional, 3 speed manual transmission with overdrive, and Hydra-Matic automatic which is outnumbered the other two transmission choices.

He didn't mention that Henry J Kaiser was involved in construction of the Hoover and Grand Coulee dams, among others, and that his shipyards shortened he time required to build "Liberty" supply ships from months to days (his shipyard famously laid the keel for on of his ships on a Monday and finished it on a Friday.

The '51 had a divided windshield. Styling touches included a "Darrin Dip" detail in the taillight housing and a Dutch Darrin signature badge below the trunk lid by the right taillight. The '51 models and later are among the most graceful styles of the fifties.

I just imagine the old tunes playing in the car... man sometimes I wish I was born in those days, back when America was proud.. and no one would offended everyday.. and gas was dirt cheap..

+Grizzlygaming88 I couldn't agree with you more. It's May 22, 2016 as I'm writing this and if this was May 22, 1952, I would've been born on August 20, 1929. Also what people used to do back in the day is going on boat cruises, hang out with friends at diners, watch movies at a drive-in theater, listen to vinyl records and mostly men would spend more time with their lady friends or as they used to call them Dames
@lincolnpaul1814

Grizzlygaming88 people did insult each other and gasoline wasn't cheap, 30 cents per gallon in today's money would be 3.50 dollars per gallon. Most people only earned 2.00 per hour.

I well remember those days. During a polio epidemic where we lived, I was sent to stay with an aunt to escape the epidemic. A neighbor's 3 year old daughter died of polio. In the autumn everyone burned leaves in piles at the curb and entire cities were smoky; that greatly exacerbated my hay fever. People burned their rubbish in incinerators in their back yards. Smoking was considered normal and non-smoking was considered both abnormal and anti-social. It was impossible to eat in a restaurant without practically being asphyxiated by cigarette smoke. Of course we have problems now, some of which are very serious, but in many ways we are better off.

Grizzlygaming88 firstly you would be old today, people did offend others, gas wasn’t cheap 30 cents a gallon in 1955 would be about 3 dollars a gallon today which is cheap compared to 6 dollars a gallon in Germany

Interesting-just saw one the other day! these cars were technically advanced, but Kaiser was too small to take on the Big 3.

They weren't alone. My parents generation was very much against seat belts. Padded dashes were sensible and didn't restrict passenger movement. But seat belts? Only race car drivers needed to wear those!
