Riding Out Hurricane Ian | Cape Coral Florida

This was our experience during the eye of Hurricane Ian at the height of the flooding. The wind blew from about 11:30am to past midnight. The flooding occurred between 2:30 and 6:30 and did not completely subside for two days.
We were incredibly lucky. Not everyone was as lucky. Please pray for the families less fortunate.
Our close neighbors had left so we knew we didn’t need to check on them. There were no reported injuries in our area.
Please check out my Hurricane Ian playlist

Since it’s already installed you could as a last resort use Quick Dam products to build up a temporary wall around it, maybe lay down a double wall then as a just in case put a small sump pump next to it with the cord running into a nearby cracked window to plug in/cut on as needed to pump out any water that might still build up from rain and leakage.

@@bobbygfl We live near the Yacht Club area of Cape Coral and had the very same experiences like yourselves as you so vividly show in your great video. In our case, the storm surge stopped just short of the level of the house floor, 5 inches to be exact. The garage was flooded with 1 inch of water though, no big deal. However, we lost a wooden fence and most of our surrounding bushes and trees, avocado and starfruit, plus one big old Royal Palm tree that came crashing down with the wind and missed our car by about 3 feet. Aggravating, but not critical of course, was the extended loss of electricity which spoilt a lot of good food in the fridge and separate freezer. Luckily, we were able to do some cooking by using an old propane camping stove. Can't do without your morning coffee! Our love and sympathy to all our fellow residents who were not as fortunate as us.

Not sure how he did. I'm in NW Cape, and we got the fuck out of there. Our whole yard got ripped to shreds but we have all our infrastructure (power, clean water, internet) back. Our soffet is badly damaged though and I don't know if that will cause structural damage as it has rained since. Anxiously waiting for the moisture test tomorrow morning

Your house is lovely and well built. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm an hour or so inland. It was dark when Ian's eye went over the house. No storm surge or flooding but powerful and LOUD wind that shook the house. It was amazing the next morning to see a hummingbird feeding on the still blooming mimosa and flowers on the bent over trellis. Life goes on.

I rode it out here in Cape Coral too, as I had hurricane Irma. The storm surge came right up to my home before it stopped rising. The power went out just after 4:00 pm, and was out for over a week, just came back on Friday morning at 9:20, and I got internet back about an hour ago. I lost nothing in this storm, and I know others who lost everything. I cooked and made coffee for my neighbors on a propane camp stove for a week, and a great neighbor got us generator power until LCEC got the power back on. God help all those who were not so lucky as me and my neighbors here.

Thank you for sharing your families experience in Hurricane Ian. Whether on the clean side or the dirty side of the Hurricane and the right side is always the dirty side. That being said being in the eye of the Hurricane is nothing to sneeze at. It was a serious Hurricane that your kids can tell their kids and you can tell your grandkids in later years! It's amazing the power of a Hurricane now the second round of Ian is the flooding and many of the folks got caught in again. Sadly people in mobile homes got hit extremely hard as well as many one story houses. I think raising the A/C and Generators on to more concrete block may be a good thing to consider. Theres the chance that you will never deal with a Hurricane again and we hope not!!! But living in Florida is part of life when we were living in the Keys Hurricane Wilma was a major hurricane in 2005, wind and flooding but that is expected in the Keys due to the location of the Keys. We evacuated due to flooding and damage to cars was the norm. Again thank you for sharing your families experience during Hurricane Ian that will go down in the history books as the most catastrophic Hurricane in Florida history, for now!!! God Bless you and your family and all that were in the path that lost all their stuff. And sadly those that lost their life in the Hurricane!!!

I think all the stuff on the ground that shouldn't have been there and the smell of all the dead birds, animals and foliage made a profoundly negative, lasting mark on her. We went out by bicycle the day after Ivan passed through. Total devastation, just like what is being experienced in Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, etc. now. I saw the flat tail on your boy at 16:00. Great video with a shitty situation 😢 I feel silly for getting upset over the last couple days because I lost power for a day and a half here in North Carolina..My ❤ goes out to you guys & gals.. Now the dogs in the video, did make me smile.. not gonna lie ❤️ I hope a speedy recover for all who was affected by this storm.. especially in Florida. ❤️

Definitely, we lost power for a week and a day here and we still have to use boiling water or bottled water. At a Wal-Mart in Del Prado a crazy lady was fighting over ice and another Cuban one was yelling saying that this Wal-Mart wasn't giving anything for free...I was about to put her in her place: Do you think this is communist Cuba?? But I preferred to keep the peace and let God handle that one.

You Did Very Well considering the Massive Damage Done by Ian. I live in the pacific NW inland had a wind storm that took out over 75 big pine trees on my Property. It took two chainsaws 5 hours to get my 70 foot long driveway clear. Now 2022 I still have a handful of trees to cut and slash piles to break down and burn in my woodstove. Lot work for Free heat in the winter.

I feel for all of you south of us. I am in Plant City In eastern Hillsborough Co. We just got wind damage unless you live near one of the rivers like the Alafia river. That is causing severe flooding among many other inlet rivers in central Florida.. Being a life long Floridian, I can say that this one will go in the record books. One day at a time. Thanks for sharing all of this with us neighbor.

We stayed. I’m finally watching footage like this. I’m in the sw cape and the day we got power I almost.. switched out. I couldn’t think about the storm anymore or watch footage really. What’s so haunting to me is knowing that even during our most panicked moments (the water covering the mailboxes in the front, the water spilling over the sea wall then climbing feet up and covering the fences entirely), there was people nearby who were having the absolute most terrible day one could imagine. People were dying, and as the storm progressed my dad kept saying “this one’s a bad one..this one’s gonna be a bad when it’s it’s over”. We had no idea just how bad…

That water was a bit too close. So glad your house (friends and family too!) survived and fared pretty well compared to others. I hope your neighbors came out ok too. It's gut wrenching to see the footage of the intense flooding and severe devastation that has taken place over there. Btw, no one was in the red car across the street, right? At one point it looked like the lights were on and I thought "oh please tell me there's no one in that car who needs help getting out!"

Can some explain the rationale to stay and ride out a storm like this? It's not like the storm was a surprise. Why not just pack a weeks worth of stuff and stay at a hotel. Seems like the risk/reward ratio leans heavily towards evacuation.
@Sailsonly1
@Sailsonly1 Год назад
Well as a person who has ridden out many Hurricanes I can give you some insight. The horrible footage shown is usually ground zero go a few miles inland and it's not nearly as dramatic. Past experience with hurricanes and knowing your home or location enter into the decision. Once you leave your home you may not be allowed reentry for days or weeks, a little damage that could be easily repaired lets say a broken window or a hole in the roof, will causes major damage left unchecked. This home was not a trailer . Often times there are no places to stay if you do leave and going inland to say Orlando wouldn't have been any better. Many people have Businesses or other interests in the area that can't be abandoned. The list of reasons to stay goes on and on . We own a tree removal company and are considered an essential business. So we stay. In the end it's a personal and family decision .
