A funny and articulate Bad Guy, Patrick Kilpatrick was born August 20, and has appeared in over 170 films, usually menacing the likes of Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven Seagal, to name only a few. In person, he's charming!
Patrick's resume is filled with memorable roles, including several popular westerns. In 1986’s "Louis L'Amour's Quick and the Dead" (not to be confused with the Sam Rami/Sharon Stone film), Patrick was cast as an American Indian tracking down Sam Elliott. The horse he rode, a Palomino named "Trigger," made a huge impression on the '6' 2" performer. More horseback riding outlaw roles followed for Patrick in two classic Tom Selleck films. “Last Stand at Saber River” amzn.to/3ONlNJx (1997) co-starred David and Keith Carradine, Suzy Amis and Haley Joel Osment, and “Crossfire Trail” amzn.to/3KO8JCE (2001) directed by “Lonesome Dove’s” Simon Wincer and co-starring Virginia Madsen, Wilford Brimley, Barry Corbin, Rex Linn, William Sanderson, Marshall Teague, Brad Johnson and Mark Harmon. Patrick is one of the gunfighters hired by Harmon tasked with running stranger Selleck out of town.
In writer-director Walter Hill’s Depression-era remake of Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo,” "Last Man Standing," amzn.to/44AVDjr Willis stars as the drifting gunslinger who sets two warring factions, Irish and Italian mafia, against one another in a ghost town. Sounds kinda like "Fistful of Dollars," doesn't it? Patrick, of course, is a gun toting employee. The film was shot on the legendary western location, Melody Ranch.
This conversation with Patrick was shot inside the Autry Museum’s Wells Fargo Theater, Jan 17, 2017. That day, we had lost audio for our interviews and only had (barely) passable audio from our camera microphones. Due to the poor audio, only a 4 minute segment of Patrick’s conversation was ever aired on A WORD ON WESTERNS. A very, very frustrating experience! But, in the five years since this interview was done, advances in AI (Artificial Intelligence) have come to our aid and RJ has been able to create an audio track that has enabled us to finally post Patrick’s complete interview. There's only a slight echo. I’d forgotten how much fun Patrick was.
