I just took a ride on a train that runs through a residential area in Hiroshima Prefecture, similar to a roller coaster.
I took a ride in commemoration since it's about to be discontinued soon

Thank you so much for showing me something I will NEVER see or ride. I live in California, I’m 75 and bed ridden that’s why I say I’ll never see or ride it. But you gave us a wonderful video of the ride up and down this rail system. Thank you so much!

Big hugs to u! I'm glad u can watch n enjoy these videos! I love watching these type of videos as well bc i don't think I will ever get to see these places either. I am not complaining AT ALL here bc I know that I am very fortunate but I'm also realistic. I'm a single mom of 2 boys (one being special needs) living on a nurses salary in a very expensive state. Traveling isn't something I can see myself being able to do for the foreseeable future. Thankfully I'm within an hour of Atlantic City n a few other popular beach towns so short trips there n a few drivable out of state getaways are the extent of my travel destinations lol. I am grateful for that though n I'm grateful for these awesome videos! Take care of yourself❤😊

I'm so glad you took us on this ride before it's gone! It would be sad to never experience this lovely little travel capsule, suspended and gliding through the air. It's a shame that it has to go. 😢 It would be neat if someone salvaged these and put them as a ride around a Safari park or something! Thank you for taking on this journey! See you next time!

I'm so annoyed with myself. I went to Hiroshima in 2019. There is so much to explore in the region, so I parked this in my 'next time' box, dammit! I love doing 'different' things like this. Instead of arriving by shinkasen from the east, I arrived into Hiroshima by ferry from Matsuyama, I really chillax way to view the Seto Inland Sea, then got the tram into the city from the ferry terminal. Hiroshima and Takamatsu are, so far, my favourite Japanese cities. I like the laid back vibe of both. Takayama is a lovely town too. Hiroshima felt very ' Australian'. In part because of the bottle brush and gum trees everywhere ( historical trade connections) but it also has a similar tempo to an Australian city.

OMG YES! This video has come at the perfect time since I'll be in Hiroshima in less than a week!! The dream is coming true everyone... I hope you all get the opportunity to visit beautiful Japan in your future. Let's respect Japanese culture and be good travellers. And to our dear Japanese friends I say this... We travellers may make mistakes from time to time because there is a lot to learn and your culture is very different from ours, but for 99.99% of tourists no harm is meant! Most of us spend 100s of hours watching videos just like this one before we come to try to minimise our impact and grasp the way things are done. We appreciate the understanding and help and we look forward to spending lots of our money with great local businesses!

@@shigeruharada2885 We had the most wonderful time in Japan. A dream come true from start to finish. The Japanese people are so kind, and so respectful. Thank you for your appreciated welcome! The sacred island of Miyajima off the coast of Hiroshima was a moving experience, we stayed overnight in a ryokan. However I do understand why Japanese people can find tourists annoying. Not every traveller was conscientious. It was disappointing to see, for example, that the sacred torii gate at Meiji Jinju was covered because people had been scratching their names in to it. This is infuriating not just for the Japanese people, but also for all respectiful citizens of the world. I hope Japan can encourage visitors to distribute themselves over the whole of Japan and not just take part in overcrowding particular sites. Japan is more than Asakusa, Osaka and Kyoto.

It's sad to see the Hiroshima Skyrail close down. It was fun to ride and an excellent place to take pictures for family and friends at home. (I had a friend who lived in Midorichuo.) It was nice to see it again, and a shame I will never get to ride it again, when I return to Japan. Looking at the bright side though, Hiroshima-yaki is still a thing.. Since 1901 a similar public transportation system exists in one German city: the „Schwebebahn“ in Wuppertal. The literal translation would be hovering street car and that is exactly what it is. A whole streetcar with several cars hanging from a rail perched over the small river Wupper by that getting the transportation of people off the streets of the narrow valley.

That's incredibly innovative! The Schwebebahn sounds like a unique and efficient way to navigate the city. 🚠

Everything about the video shows so much beauty. even the mundane, residential areas have this clean and functional beauty without any real embellishments. And just seeing everything in working order, and peaceful.... Just a pure pure kind of beauty, that is very hard to describe or put into words as to why I feel that way. I wish I was lucky enough to have grown up in japan, because where I come from is full of crime, and filthy all the time. Buildings have graffiti on everything and everything public is broken within a week as people have no respect for others or public facilities.

This is the Sky Rail transportation system in Hiroshima. It connects residential areas on top of the mountain with railroad stations at the foot of the mountain. Total length 1.3 km, elevation difference 160 m. Unfortunately, it is scheduled to be discontinued in April 2024. If you want to ride it, you should go there now.

Here in Europe we are used to seeing videos and images from main cities like Tokyo, and it always looks very busy and crowded. However, Hiroshima looks really nice! Especially from the air as experienced in this monorail. Quite sad to see it's going to disappear, but I can understand the issue of cost of maintenance... Dismantling will cost a pretty penny too, I think, but it probably will be good for the city if it's replaced by EV buses. Thank you for taking us on this journey, glad we had a chance to ride along - we will remember 🙏

The only time I have noticed wear and tear of a building in your videos. Usually everything is pristine clean, but one can tell that this place has seen better days. Sill, I cannot get over how cool and interesting Japan is. Also, I'm really excited to start recognizing a few written symbols here and there being a total novice studying Japanese! Big progress for me LOL (I still rely on phonetical latin supplements in my exercises to be understand what is written, but I'll get there!) P.S. I really LOVE the neighbourhood the rail is in, would be lovely to live there. Looks serene, will be very quiet when the rail is gone and surrounded with mountains. Wonderful picture!

I had one of the craziest days ever when I rode that. I was studying abroad at Nanzan in Nagoya Fall 2022, and I did a coaster trip. That day, Halloween, I went to Washuzan Highland and rode a backwards coaster and made my way to Miroku no Sato and rode another backwards coaster in the same day! I took local trains from Fukuyama to Hiroshima to save money lol and saw this line on my map and decided to hop out and ride it! So glad I did what a quirky system. Hopped back on the train to Hiroshima, visited the genbaku dome then caught the last Shinkansen of the night to Hakata. On Halloween so in Hiroshima everyone was all dressed up it was fun haha.

If it is required that riders be seated while in operation then capacity is 8 people. No system could overcome such low capacity to become profitable. But as I child I dreamed of rollercoasters as a form of transportation so I appreciate your take on this sky tram.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the concept! Imagining rollercoasters as transportation is a fun and creative idea. It's always interesting to think about how we can innovate in transportation. Do you have any other futuristic transportation ideas?

I can’t imagine an earthquake in there. Scary. Here in Southern California there’s not much cool transit. I have lived here all my life and have never taken a bus in Southern California or the train. I have taken the MUNI when I go to San Francisco

@@experience_japanIt’s so spread out here that everyone has cars. I don’t know what I’d do without a car. I could never live in NYC where you have to rely on the subway. It sounds gross. I’ve seen videos of the NY subway ew 🤮

We were at Okonimura on my first visit to Hiroshima. Loved it! Will go there again for sure on my next visit. The stall were we ate was owned by an elderly lady and as our group was pretty big and there wasn't enough place at the counter, she just allowed some of our group to sit on her side (the "kitchen") of the counter. There was a japanese gentleman, pretty drunk and apparently a regular who was very fond of our group so he offered to buy everyone a bottle of bulldog sauce :-) The owner made fun of him and told us that he's just an old fool. :-) In the end, we could bargain him down to one bottle per couple, as he wouldn't accept No as an answer.

This is great, I was in Hiroshima in April of 2023 and I did not know about this! In Germany we would call it a "Schwebebahn" or "suspension railway" in Englisch. In Wuppertaler Germany we still have a "suspension railway" sinces 1901. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn

That's fascinating! It's amazing how different places have similar innovative transportation methods. The suspension railway in Wuppertal is an iconic example of such engineering. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you get to explore more hidden gems like this in the future!

They certainly love all different types of rail travel in Japan! This one is quite unique. I'm still trying to think of who this capsule is for. Do people in the neighborhood just ride it down to the bottom? I'm surprised there aren't shops or other attractions at the top of the hill. It seems like the residents at the top are the only ones who really benefit from this service. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your interest! Yes, it’s quite a unique form of transport here. The capsule is mainly for locals, making it easier to navigate the steep hill. It’s an interesting point about the shops and attractions; it would indeed add more charm. Appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks for filming! Japan has so many transport gems. It is a 'Gadgetbahn' though, and ropeway manufacturers still try to sell 'urban ropeways' like this as if they were some future-bound innovation, trying to outrun moremeaningful modes of transportation. Had they instead built a modern streetcar in 1998 instead of this, it would most likely remain in operation, although the served area looks like suburban sprawl which is generally not easy to serve with good public transport. Anyway, great that you have documented this, as it is still technically interesting and the views when floating high above the streets are of course gorgeous.

It was too unique to be profitable, that's so sad! It's a fantastically wonderful view! I don't know what the plans are, but if the moving parts are the problem the first lower section of the track could be converted into an elevated walkway. That would preserve the view and cut out the expensive cost of the system, without tearing down the entire structure. However, I have no idea about the weather and temperature swing of this mountain location. If an elevated walk way would frequently become a hazard in icey or windy conditions for pedestrians, then it wouldn't be an option.
