The train departs from Tokyo Station and separates at Okayama Station.

Actually one of my chief complaints about this cabin is that there appears to way to make a coffee and no comfortable seat to sit and drink said non-existent coffee.

before I took this train, I dreamt of lying in bed and staring into the sky (until I fall asleep or never sleep). but soon, I got annoyed because every passing station had lights shining straight into my face hahaha. It's too dazzling. It went from dark→dark→dark→BAM!→dark→dark→dark→BAM! i stopped looking at the sky after a while.

I've been there and a family member studied there in the countryside in Fukui, and the sewer water is cleaner than my drinking water, i can see everything underneath. edit: i want to even add that even i've seen more animals in Osaka more than i've ever seen anywhere else. When I was a child there was a sleeper train called the "Westlander" that ran from Brisbane to Charleville. And I used to ride on this every year to visit my Grandmother . It was a brilliant train , it had First and Business class sleeping berths , and an economy class seated car , as well as a licensed dining car where you could get meals or a drink , and since it was an Australian train at that time the dining car was a pub when it was not time for a meal to be served . The food was pretty good and it was a real treat to have bacon and eggs at sunrise while going down the range . Unfortunately owing to funding cutbacks the service has been reduced to just economy seats and a cafe car that has a vending machine for snacks and drinks . But when it ran at it full glory it was one of the great train trips of Australia.

That's what I was planning back here in Canada. We have the Via Rail. A train that crosses the entire country. In my mind, I pictured the train would be as beautiful as this one. Then I watched some Via Rail videos.... it looks... uh.. not like this at all.

My husband and I visited Japan for two weeks several years ago. I didn't speak any Japanese, yet got around easily. The train system was clean, quiet and easy to navigate. Now I live in Chicago and the train system is a joke. People are nasty and get violent on the subway. It's like stepping into a reverse world. I wish more people could see how Japan keeps a city like Tokyo running. We stayed in Shinjuku, then Kyoto. We took trains to Osaka, and Hakone for the hotsprings. I wish Japan was a closer neighbor of ours, I'd visit every year!

For most, it's because they don't have much time off and they got something else planned as just spend the entire holiday in a train. For me, I barely got enough time off with my 12 hours flight to comehome (excluding waiting during transit), I can't afford slower transportation even if I actually didn't like the cramped plane cabin.

The finer the snow fail, the more stark this enchantment becomes on whoever views it. The air quality does wonders for snow's brilliance and timbre (metaphorically)...cleaner water and air gives only more potency; take two scoops of snow, one from the city, another from the countryside. Even in a country as condensed as Japan, the essence of both is varied: - the one from the city possesses more impurity and finer contamination. It clumps together and hardens, however its weight is uneven. - the one from the country in contrast is uniform; pure, untarnished. It hardens evenly, or when moved through, gives yield with the softness of water.

I traveled around China in trains in 2004, as a foreigner I was forced to buy an expensive sleeper birth when it was available... and once I shared a compartment with a beautiful middle aged woman, we smiled at each other pleasantly and sipped tea by the window.. she didnt speak english and I didnt speak chinese. in the evening she sang a song, just sort of casually... but she was obviously a professional performer... it was the most beautiful voice Ive ever heard in person and it was just for me... a kid from america. I didnt have anything so wonderful to share with her.... just my remembrance of it.

I took my students to western Honshu in 1999. It was the trip of a lifetime! It was a cultural exchange with our sister high school in Gifu Prefecture. We visited the school, went to small sumo, Hiroshima Peace Park, attended a party for the exchange teacher from Montreal, shared karaoke with the teachers, went to a karaoke box with a few close friends, visited the mayor of Toki City and a ceramist studio owner who is considered a National Treasure. We stayed in Kyoto at an Inn and visited Nara. On the way to Tokyo via bullet train we saw Mt. Fuji. It was surrounded by clouds, as if floating! A true spiritual experience! Your country and it’s people are spectacular!

I have huge travel anxiety so I love to see videos like this just to see how exciting it would be to travel without actually having to travel! I like the atmosphere of an empty station in the morning too, there is something so peaceful about travelling late night or early morning, like you're the only person awake. Very serene :) We don't have trains where I live in western Norway because there are too many mountains and not enough people - but we do have express boats and ferries!

I have massive travel anxiety and just bad anxiety in general. When I turned 25 in 2017, I decided I would suck up the courage and visit Japan (from Australia) Since I was young, I had always wanted to go. I hated planes (even to this day) and I had never traveled in my life, let alone by myself. My Japanese was horrible at the time also. You know what? Not only did I survive, but, I had an amazing, life changing experience. I had seen more of Japan in one month than I had seen of my own country back in Australia. I then visited Japan again a year later in 2018 with a friend, and then almost two years later in 2020, I moved here. I have now lived here for over 18 months, am happily married to a Japanese girl, have some close Japanese and other foreign friends and run my own business in the very country I always dreamt of visiting since I was a kid. The point of my story? Success is never built in your comfort zone. I was so scared to leave the comfort zone of my home back in Australia. But, it’s the best decision I ever made in my life, no matter how uncomfortable it was at the time. Trust me, if you can, suck up some courage and go for what you want! You only have one life, try not to waste it. Good luck :)

.........I watch it again. The thrill for me would not be the destination....but travelling in a humming tube of comfort while beautiful Japan passed by in those big windows. I'd be looking for the longest rides possible...as I feel a certain sadness when it's time to disembark.

@@beaconing7689 This is absolutely not true. Americans are perhaps one of the peoples most attentive to personal hygiene as well as their homes, gardens and public places. Americans smell clean. Obviously there are exceptions, but compared to many European countries, especially in northern Europe, there is no comparison. In Europe, the opposite rule seems to be applied where at very clean streets seems to correspond the less washed people and vice versa.

Some people think we don't have overnight trains in the U.S., but actually Amtrak has some very pleasant sleeper trains, and the views can be spectacular. We don't have as many amenities with our bedrooms (and I am very envious of being able to lock one's compartment when one leaves to take a shower), but the rooms are clean, the windows are huge, and meals are included with the price of your bedroom. My favorite train is The Cardinal, which goes through parts of the Appalachian Mountains on the East Coast which only hikers get to see. The scenery reminds me of the mountains in your video. Thank you for your video - it was beautifully done, and made me dream of someday visiting Japan and riding on this train!

@@aiaistandley You're basically paying for the price of spending the night in a mid-tier hotel, cost of travel, and meals altogether. The cost for 2 nights, 1 day from California to Kansas City was $1000 (2 people) for a Roommette or $1500 for a Room (bigger + in-cabin shower).

Simply, no country does trains like Japan. In every respect they are the best in the world- timeliness, cleanliness, service, design, safety, style, and availability (good cost/value ratio too!). I travelled on a sleeper train from Tokyo to Sapporo about 8 years ago, also on a snowy day. It was an incredible experience. I'd recommend it to anyone!

When we were kids in Canada twice we took the train from Northern Ontario out to the coast of British Columbia to see our Grandfather. I believe it was four days and three nights each way. The long dark tunnels and scary bridges of the mountains were the most memorable

It looks very beautiful, it looks surprisingly similar to the Swiss/ Austrian countryside. In Belgium trains aren't that clean and as we have a small country you travel from one side to the other in a couple of hours. I loved the way the windows are shaped to give a marvelous view.

I lived in Russia for 5 years and traveled extensively on overnight trains. Doing it during winter was sublime. Oh how I miss that. Loved it! No background music, no incessant chatter, just the zen of the train with some English subtitles. So very relaxing. One reason I love my RV is that I can take my home with me on travels. The train is even better - no driving! I visited Japan years ago with a group. I'd love to do a tour on my own again. Some questions for you: 1. All signs are in Japanese. How do I manage if I don't speak Japanese? 2. Is it possible to do Japan on a budget? Cheapest airfare? Any budget hotels? 3. Best way to get around a city - cab, bike, bus? 4. Best place to eat cheap and healthy? 5. Your ticket was US $267 for that first class train sleeper unit. Can I get a less luxurious sleeper unit cheaper? I would love to get some tips from you. $267 for your own first class cabin and bed and a shower for a 12 hour trip is a bargain. You can easily spend that for an AirBnB and it doesn't take you anywhere.

@@walkthedogs240 I spend nothing in my RV. $267 is outrageous for one night of sleep, frankly. I'd sleep in my car and shower at a truck stop for $6. As far as food goes, its the worst crappy food I've seen. It will make you sick. Eat better. This is why I travel in my RV - my own clean sheets and firm mattress, shower anytime, healthy fresh food, and can stop and go anytime.

They’re aware how difficult it is to learn Chinese so they accommodate & make it quite easy to travel. Signs have an english subtitle (like the instructional pad on this videos room lock) & they repeat announcements in english (esp when they know an english speaker is on board). Google maps app on ur phone makes it simple to figure out the public transit routes. For MANY reasons Asia is one of the heaviest tourist locations but the biggest is how easy it is to travel on a budget.….as long as ur aware of cultural differences & don’t expect to find the same things u would while traveling USA (obviously) then you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The JR pass is a fantastic way to travel in Japan. I've been on almost all of the different Shinkansen as well as many express and local trains. In a way, trains like the Sunrise Izumo or Sunrise Seto are better than the Shinkansen because the countryside goes past slower and you can appreciate it. But on the other hand, it's a great experience to take the 320kmh H5 from Tokyo to Shin-hakodate and go under the ocean, or the smooth ride of the new trains to Kanazawa.

Love it! I'm from Scotland and have folks over in Osaka, with one cousin living with her husband in Hiroshima. Trying to visit every year or two. Was *supposed* to go this year in October with a pal, but the virus scuppered those dreams. 😔☹️

Oh man, this was like a medicine for me. I was a bit tense and it relaxed me so nicely. The snow, the calming, muffled sound of the train , even the announcements. Beautiful train inside! Thanks for sharing. I lived 7 years in amazing Japan. It was heaven. The best years of my life. I miss Japan a lot. The nicest people. Natsukashii... very nostalgic.

@@perceptortron 😀 I lived 27 yrs in Cluj (Romania) where I was born. 4 yrs in Athens. 7 yrs in Sapporo & Tokyo. 11 yrs in Paris and 17 yrs in Sydney. Life took me to all these amazing places. I acquired 4 citizenships in the process, now I belong to all these places. Moving again? I think I’m done… staying put in Sydney, but will visit Japan again after the pandemic. @@gulmerton2758 Studies, 2 marriages and work. I feel grateful that I had this opportunity in my life although it was not always a walk in the parc. Adjusting to very different cultures and values, learning the languages, and loosing friends. Every time I left a country, I had to leave good friends behind. I find that after a certain age, one cannot make the same friendships we could make when young. But life is so beautiful and I don’t have any regrets. Wishing you all the best!

I want to move back to a place I call home, but I’m also worried I’m just going out of nostalgia/familiarity and will feel stuck. On the other hand, if I explore somewhere entirely new, I fear getting attached because the more places I go, the more places I’ll call home, and the more homesick I’ll feel when I can’t be in all places at once. Any tips?

It always happens in india In india if you enter a sleeper train it will have the dirtiest smell we have ever smelled But the ac train in India is not that bad

Oh man.. The experience of traveling in trains in Japan is an experience in itself. I've visited Japan couple of times and enjoyed the rides in Shinkansen.
