As the world became more connected in the 17th century, intrepid traders set aside their overland caravans and took to the seas in search of new goods and trading partners. In this episode, we’ll look at how trade relationships started by the Silk Road went global as merchants established new trade routes across oceans, and how those new global connections fueled economic growth ... and the slave trade.

Thank you thank you thank you for covering the Manila galleons ! As a Filipino American, I feel this is a very unrecognized part of world trade, yet it brought so many things including chilis, chocolate and other goods throughout the world.

Really skipped over the importance of India. Wonder why the indigenous population of the Americas are called Indians? Why there was an East Indies and a West Indies? Why is an entire ocean (and the only one in the world) named after a country, that is India? The role of India has been downplayed, while the Euro-American focus is overly glamorised

This is video 11 in the series. Some of that topic was covered previously, and the first several videos are all about Asia beginning around 1200 CE focused on the Monghols, nothing to do with Europe or America. The previous video is about the Columbian Exchange, and other previous videos talk about Columbus landing in Central America believing it to be the East Indies and calling people there Indians because of that. So far this series hasn't talked about why the oceans have their current names, and I'm not sure if that's in the curriculum. We'll see.
