www.crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com A review of the Rieju MR300 Ranger? There have been very few changes from the original Gas Gas Ranger so hopefully this will still help if looking for a Rieju MR300 review. It's the 2020 Gas Gas Ranger review, a bike we have been super keen to ride as several of us think this could be our next bike. It falls into what many call the hybrid class - it's not quite a full enduro bike due to a slight trials influence. The good news? We had five riders for our Gas Gas Ranger review 2020 (or Rieju MR300 review) over two days and we agree it certainly meets those expectations. A few things we did't like. But overall plenty to like about this neat package and it's certainly going to challenge its main competitor, the Beta Xtrainer. First up? Kayaba suspension. It's not the famously brilliant SSS setup of its big brother. It's slightly softer and works great for the Ranger's intended use. I upped the speed a few times and it still worked fine, but get too aggressive and you'll find its limits quickly though. I've had my Beta Xtrainer suspension completely revalved and resprung and it still can't match the Ranger's stock setup. I suspect this is why the Rieju MR300 Ranger still feels quite stable at speed, whereas the Xtrainer does become quite skittish once you are in third gear. The Gas Gas 2020 (Rieju MR300 Ranger) two stroke pipe is up nice and high and tucked in nicely. If you are into hard enduro you may want a carbon fibre guard. For some reason Gas Gas are claiming a dry weight of 108kg so it's good to know it's not that porky. What else is there to like? The price. In Australia the 2020 Gas Gas Ranger costs $11500 plus on roads making it one of the cheapest European dirt bikes on the market. So what don't we like about the Gas Gas Ranger? As mentioned, the Ranger is slightly heavier than the Beta Xtrainer although you only notice it when picking the bike up. I think most owners would happily pay a bit extra for a lithium battery which knocks another 1.5kg off the the weight. Irrelevant for most riders, but if you are into snotty rocky terrain then these 2020 Gas Gas Ranger frame rails are just like the Beta Xtrainer ones and can get bashed by rocks, unless protected by a suitable bashplate. In my experience the stock Michelin tyres work fine, but they were terrible in the mud and clay. The shorter knobs packed up with mud rapidly and turned into slicks. We are really spoiled for choice nowadays with this the new version, the Rieju MR300 Ranger. The clutch is incredibly light and perfect for all the slipping required in slow terrain. All clutches should be this good. Takasago rims from Japan have a great reputation. We were advised though to keep an eye on spoke tension more than normal just for the first few rides, they can loosen off easily before bedding in. Overall the handling was impressive. But it was quite at home in the faster flowing stuff too. The 2020 Gas Gas Ranger power delivery is very user-friendly and it's smoother than the Beta Xtrainer. It has less punch at low revs, something I missed due to our style of riding but It think most riders would actually find this better if they are less experienced or not aiming to ride snotty terrain all the time. Some claim that rejetting and changing the Gas Gas Ranger base gasket can increase the low end grunt substantially, I'll chase this up possibly do a Gas Gas 2020 = update vid later. Ergonomics? We had five different riders from short to tall, everyone was comfortable. Our shortest rider did notice that the 2020 Gas Gas Ranger is 2cm higher than his Beta Xtrainer, but pointed out the Gas Gas seat is quite thick and there's plenty of scope for cutting the seat down if needed. At the other end of the scale, I'm ridiculously tall but felt comfortable on the Ranger, especially as the rear panels flair out a lot so it's easy to grip the bike with your legs and feel quite stable. What else for the Gas Gas 2020 models?

THE NEW RIEJU MODELS! The old Gas Gas models have continued under a new name - Rieju. For 2021, the models have only minor changes so this review will still applicable. As of 2021, Rieju still has only made minor changes. Unfortunately the heavy weight persists. They haven't changed the unreliable e-start, although we hear it's bathed in oil now which should help a bit. The engines are still soft at the lower revs. But if the price is cheap, we think it's still a good option in the two stroke market! Unfortunately they are priced not much less than the competition in Australia... so why pay so much for a six year old design? If you don't know about Rieju, read below... Unfortunately KTM is becoming a huge multinational trying to buy up the competition, such as Gas Gas. The good news? Rieju in Spain has bought the intellectual and industrial property used to build GasGas enduro models which will continue under the RIEJU brand. And the Ranger will continue as the Rieju MR300 Ranger! adbmag.com.au/editorial/rieju-to-manufacture-enduro-models-on-gasgas-platform/ The investment made by RIEJU will see the GasGas 300 two-stroke as we know it today manufactured under the RIEJU brand at its plant in Figueres, Spain. Distribution of new bikes will start in June. Rumours are circulating that suggest RIEJU is currently updating the platform to modernise a few key aspects including relocating the starter motor. Jordi Riera, CEO of RIEJU, S.A. said “This agreement allows RIEJU an immediate presence in the off-road competition segment with larger capacity machines than usual for Rieju, as well as a significant expansion of our client portfolio, and important openings to new markets. We are very excited for this new adventure and the enormous challenge that this entails. We have enormous experience in our design, manufacture and distribution structure, so we are convinced that this project will be a success for our company." RIEJU was founded in 1934 and currently manufactures more than 12,000 motorcycles annually in its facilities in Figueres near Barcelona and exports 85% of its production to more than 40 countries. It’s known for producing small-to-mid capacity scooters, trailbikes and roadbikes.

Having bought a Ranger 300 after watching this vid, I am still impressed with it. 0 issues so far with 15 hours on the clock. The bike did loose a small amount of coolant in the first ride, however the level has subsequently settled at the top of the fins (seems normal radiator behavior in my experience). I have noticed the slight lack of ground clearance in very deep ruts, but not been a major nuisance. Thank you for the video.

I was just looking at the new bikes from Beta and found a nice story about KTM purchasing a part of Gas Gas so that could explain the old KTM style starter... However I am looking into this bike as it has peaked my interest a lot as I am not a racer anymore and would love to have a nice lighter 2 stroke trail bike but I'm being caught between the new Beta 200 rr and a 300cc grouping of bikes. Looks like it's going to have to take a few visits to some shops to figure out what I like but luckily I have one shop that has 4 of the brands that I'm looking into so that could be a very good thing!

Last weekend was a great ride, no problems, just enjoying the trail. :D Now I´m going to test a new radiator fan with a new electrical current rectifier and lithium battery and I hope all the problems are gone! I would recommend redo this review with 2022 rieju models.. starter is now almost flawless and with right jetting the "big" models has so much or even more bottom grunt than beta...
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 года назад
Only time will tell if the starter is 'flawless'. Instead of a re-design they have just lubricated it. It's still an antiquated system that will cause more problems in the long run... hopefully they lube mod will defer it for longer than usual. More grunt? Unless there's been some kind of engine re-design I can't imagine the Rieju will be much different to before. I did chat with the national marketing guy a few times but he didn't seem interested in arranging bikes for review.

The problem with the KTMs starter style was the quality of bushings used to bear the bendix. If the gasgas uses better bushings and the bushings hold, perhaps we can expect a more reliable starter system

Update #3 - 150 hours on the clock of my Ranger. I´m 1,82m and 95kg, I think this bike suits better a smaller guy because of the ride height, it´s too low for me even with every possible bit of suspension raising. Maybe i´ll try some aftermarket lower pegs. Added a radiator fan, it´s a must have, like all bikes that do hard enduro. No troubles since my last update apart from the f#"$%$ electric starter... The bike is serviced every 30h so it´s a design flaw in the bike. I quit dealing with this stupid flaw so i´m getting a kickstarter installed. The Rieju Ranger already brings the kickstarter so i would still consider that bike over the x trainer. Cheers!

I got myself the full enduro version ec300 a few months back and now have about 25hrs in it. I love the bike and the suspension. The jetting was waaay too rich out of the box for me here in south east Queensland so spent a bit of time working through that and it runs really nicely now. I think it has the same tyres as the ranger too and I was thinking how good they are without the tubliss. I’m definitely no expert though as have only been properly enduro style riding for the last year and a bit. Ranger sounds awesome and considerably less money. I look forward to hopefully riding one so I can compare...

It's a real shame, Jeff. The pricing here just puts it on par with Beta and Sherco unfortunately. I was having a conversation about this bike yesterday. The difference between the Ranger and the EC300 is minimal and the EC300 is able to be dialled down to produce a more linear output. The service life is better than most other smokers at 70hrs inspection and 100hrs top-end rebuild and I have heard reports that some riders are out to 120hrs. A Kato/Husky is 40hrs before a rebuild. Trying to get hold of a demo bike is proving to be difficult though. Something that Sherco do really well.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 5 лет назад
not sure about those rebuild times, michael. the 40 hours for kato/husky would probably be the factory recommendation for race bikes or aggressive riding, most manufacturers have similar figures for that. for us everyday hacks, 100 hours is easily obtainable on all the current two strokes... this isn't a public recommendation but i know plenty of guys do top ends between 150 and 200 hours on various brands with no problems because they don't ride hard and maintain them well.
@johnbranson7253
@johnbranson7253 5 лет назад
40 hours before a KTM/Husky 2-stroke needs a rebuild? most owners do top ends at 120-160 hours & a full rebuild at maybe 3-400. but I've heard of KTM/Huskys going well over both of those numbers.

@reinisgailitis
@reinisgailitis 2 года назад
Hello! Wanted to ask: 1) From watching your reviews on Beta Xtrainer and GasGas Ranger and comparing what I hear, I cannot find a lot of features in which the Beta is better than the Ranger. If not considering the engine and speedometer problems you've mentioned on Beta, the other thing I understood is that it's suspension is noticeably limited for aggressive/fast riding, whereas Ranger's suspensions seems to be way more capable in stock setting (I wouldn't want to invest more money into suspension as it add to the total investment). Also, for typical sized man the Rangers seems to be closer in its dimensions to a full on enduro bike, with may be a good thing. Ranger doesn't seem to have any big issues as well (not too sure how much of an issue is that starter thing). Anyways, my question is - would you agree that if the price is the same at this point in time it seems to be a almost a no-brainer to choose the Rieju MR300 Ranger over Beta Xtrainer 300? If you don't agree, please, tell me why. 2) If we take either Xtrainer 300 or Ranger 300 and compare it to SWM RS300R, how would you describe the difference in ability of those bikes to handle "hard enduro" type of terrain? I'm asking because I'm getting into off-road riding and I'm looking for my first off-road bike, and I would want it to have as long of a lifespan as possible between rebuild, as well as long service intervals, and it would be perfect if I could occasionally ride it on road, but at the same time I want to ride off-road on weekends and I want to do cross training (trial skills), so was wondering - how much worse the SWM RS300R handles these types of situations (all these bikes cost almost the same here in Latvia, Europe). 3) I'm not too sure about that starter problem on GasGas Ranger, but I was wondering, if anything happens, can you still ride and start the bike with the kickstarter, which as I understand, comes as standard? Thanks for shedding light on to this matter! Keep up the good vids!
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 года назад
Sorry Reinis, for a pile of reasons we never make personal bike recommendations. We'll share our opinions of what each bike is like, but everyone's own situation is so different I never even begin to advise anyone on what might suit them. The SWM starter? It shouldn't lock the engine up and prevent kickstarting unless something very serious went wrong perhaps. I'm no mechanic so I don't really know.

@@crosstrainingenduro Thanks for answering. I probably didn't express myself correctly, sorry, I'll try to be more specific and I hope you can find time and choose to try and provide an answer one more time to the question. What I was asking in terms of comparison between Ranger and Xtrainer was more your view, if you compare your experiences with those bikes as well as your reviews about them. Basically, for me, watching both those reviews it really kind of seemed like a no brainer that Ranger seems to be a better all around price/performance option compared to Xtrainer, without needing any upgrades in near future, and I was just wondering - am I missing something of what you've said that I'm probably making an incorrect assessment on this. With regards to the RS300R question - the main thing I hoped you'd answer is about your capability on RS300R compared to Ranger/Xtrainer, that is - how much have you found the RS300R being a limitation or rather a challenge to ride in gnarly terrain compared to the Ranger/Xtrainer and would you say that you yourself can do "so much better" on Ranger/Xtrainer that RS300R is no comparison at all (way less capable or energy draining, or whatever)? P.S. I know you've told on many videos that you'll not provide specific bike recommendations for people. Maybe I don't fully understand the scope of that disclaimer, but in this (updated) question what I'm really interested is in your own comparison and view, as if for yourself, how you see it (basically, the view you're probably sharing/discussing with your riding buddies - if you cannot share it publicly here I can understand that). I understand that this may still be "the same" thing regarding specific bike recommendations, and if so, I'm sorry for "wasting" your time with these questions, cause if I would've better understood the scope of it, I wouldn't have bothered asking these questions. Best of luck and thank you for always trying to answer all questions, that is indeed rare for such a high profile channel as you have!

You've typed so much now I feel I have to answer a bit, Reinis. lol Re: personal recommendations. There are so many factors. Your height. Your upper v lower body height ratio. Level of experience. How you ride. What's the terrain like. How much do you value resale when you sell, or parts cost and availability. I worked out once that if I was to give personal advice I'd want answers to at least 30 questions and I STILL wouldn't be happy answering until I'd actually seen the person riding as well. All I can say is personally I valued the lighter weight and much better grunt at low revs of the Beta Xtrainer. For my sort of riding this far outweighed the Ranger's better suspension. And this could easily be irrelevant to you. The SWM? I would hate to ride that in slow technical tracks, for all the reasons listed in our 'four strokes for hard enduro?' video. And it's much heavier than their claimed weight too.

Plenty of rumours on Facebook about Gas Gas going broke as they restructure their workforce. The 2020 models are still on the way (Rangers are already being delivered. The latest update from Gas Gas head office is here: facebook.com/groups/200259146778248/permalink/1519758501494966/ And this was an earlier post from Gas Gas USA: "I just wanted to let all of you know if you haven't heard already of an article released in Spain about the "closure" of the GasGas company. This story is filled with incorrect statements and half truths, it doesn't appear the USA is only country that likes fake news or news altered for an objective. There is a MAJOR restructuring going on in Spain that should have been accomplished well over 8 months ago, but with the politics between the two major shareholders, it hasn't gone quickly or smoothly. Black Toro Capital (60% investors) are looking for investors to purchase the Contreras shares in GasGas so they may split the two companies apart and during the intermediate future, they have had to do a temporary layoff. There are three investment candidates right now, and one has had 4 meetings already with a 5th meeting coming, so things are looking positive. In Spain, if you want to restructure or eliminate/terminate employees it is NOT very easy at all. Each employee must be given a severance of 1 month plus for every year they have been employed with a company. When trying to reduce employee/overhead of at least 35 employee?s that are mostly from the Torrot side, but on the same payroll as GasGas, this is not an easy task, nor is it inexpensive. The other real option is to do a temporary layoff as they call it ?put to the fridge?. This way the government must step in and pay unemployment but it isn't anywhere close to the employee salaries, and the effect would hope to be that the employee goes looking for other work. You can now see why that story is so one sided and from the union leaders trying to make a social media outcry. In the meantime, Black Toro Capital is continuing the needed restructure and to undo all of what the previous management had done. In the last three years, the old management went from 70 employees to 135 employees. Created a GasGas Sales office in Barcelona away from factory in Girona. Created a Torrot Sales office in Madrid. Created a Torrot Flagship store in Madrid. Hired a 3rd party warehouse for parts distribution in between Madrid and Barcelona. Started construction on a new factory for Torrot in Cadiz, Spain. Along with purchasing or acquiring SEVERAL other entities. All of these costly overheads that bring no return of investment are closing and all is going back to Girona. Thankfully! GasGas will become just GasGas again! The aftermarket support team will still be operational the entire time, as are some of the other major support teams needed for everyday operation, which the story left out of course. Also, there is limited production still going on based on Torrot Muvi (scooter) orders and some limited production of 2020 trials in July. Product release is still set for the end of July, with our order period being in August. Mark Berg COO Gas Gas ------------------------------------- The unions aren't happy about it of course. You can translate this page to see their response and get another side to the story: www.diaridegirona.cat/economia/2019/06/20/comite-torrot-gas-gas-tem/987668.html?fbclid=IwAR2CW-tiqUyHxtnXXBfdpdDMOqgkezZnCltljQgovX5oZHW54aHzXh7A3MU Show less Reply · 4 ▼ GAS GAS RANGER 2020 REVIEW Cross Training Enduro stfuliberal 11 hours ago Only if I weighed 150lbs. lmao Reply · 1

Hermit mindset enlightment If the starter system is inspected every 6 months problems will be averted. It’s a bummer and an inherent flaw, but I find taking off the ignition cover every 6 months to be reasonable... considering how tightly wound up these bikes are, giving things regular lookovers is kind of justified.

hard to say bill. as per the vid, i suspect for many it would be better asthe suspension is light years ahead of the xtrainer. it doesn't feel skittish at speed like the xtrainer. but then if you are seriously into the snotty terrain the xtrainer is a bit lighter and has more punch at low revs....

Sounds as though GG has missed the mark (yet again, continuously) with poor starter, a place where Beta has always stomped them all. But Beta really, really needs to get onboard with a better suspension package. Pretty sad when a reworked suspension isn't as good as what comes stock on everyone else's offering. All in all, great to see competition within classes.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 5 лет назад
agreed, in the early days a major plus with beta two strokes was the much better e-start until KTM finally lifted their game a few years back. and even though sherco had the right design i think they were having bendix issues, at least in the early years. hopefully gas gas will eventually redesign this part of the two strokes but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me... the wet mod makes a big difference and at least fixing anything is very simple with that easy access. but man it's ugly lol.

Only drawback to the starter placement on the Beta is just wait until the starter fails. It happened on my 15 300 Race Edtion and it's expensive to replace because the engine has to be removed from the chassis. Then the new starter is very expensive. Total cost is just under $700.00 parts and labor..!!

@@crosstrainingenduroI´ve bought a 2020 Gas Gas EC 300 Ranger. First and second ride (4 hours each) i´ve noticed the bike a litle bit hot with some coolant pouring out of the hose in a slow technical trail, but i thought it could be normal since the bike didn´t come with radiator fan (should buy one in next couple of months). Next ride, a full day intermediate trail, the refrigeration problem continued AND the starter sometimes didn´t work. Without a kickstarter, my day was awfull. Took it to the dealer, the radiator cap was replaced and the starter problem fixed with some lubrification (I think). Next ride, another full day intermediate trail, same two problems AGAIN...and the water pump seal was passing water to the clutch oil... To the dealer again, water pump seal replaced, starter fixed (the inside of the aluminium black cap in the left side of the motor below the starter had to be drilled and placed a bronze ring so the shaft of the starter doesn´t lock up), refrigeration problem treated with diferent radiator coolant. My pacience was running out fast.... Last ride, it was suposed to be a full day of riding. Starts with a dead battery (replaced by a friend´s AJP), and in a slow technical trail the bike starts to boil, and the thermostat cracks, ending my day in a cloud of cooling vapor. :( So, I´m not very happy with the reliability of this bike.

I’m glad they didn’t make Beta’s same stupid decision on suspension. I’d own an xtrainer if the Dingbats at beta didn’t put crap suspension on it. I’m praying for 2020 the xtrainer fixes its suspension problem. Otherwise, maybe I’ll look at the ranger.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 4 года назад
two ways of looking at it though cannon. the local suspension crew put the xtrainer on the dyno and said it is sprung and valved with semi-trials specs, and that's what the bike is designed for. but of course many of us want the light weight of the xtrainer but then want to ride it more like a normal enduro bike so of course then the suspension doesn't suit. the ranger is probably a better option then.
@MrCannonls
@MrCannonls 4 года назад
Thanks for the reply. You make sense for sure. I just love beta and have a great local dealer, so I’ll probably either adapt an xtrainer or lower a 300rr. But I’ve been riding trials since young, so maybe the xtrainer suspension will make me feel at home:)

Crappy old ktm starter is a deal breaker, especially since there's no kicker. Why is it that manufacturers go all this distance and completely fall flat on their face on the last mile. Same with the junk suspension on the xtrainer. Just boggles my mind.
