In this video I do a review of the 6mm Remington, originally called the 244 Remington. I compare it to the 243 Winchester and the 6mm Creedmoor.

My first deer rifle was a 6mm in a model 788 with a 22" barrel. Imr 4350 and 85 gr sierra hollow point game king work splendidly together.

Custom barrel with 1:8 twist would be excellent in a long action. Harvested my first deer with a 6 Remington at 350 yards.

I got one I love it but it's expensive to fire with rounds being around 2`50 a round if not more depending where your from its just not practical unless you do reload your own ammo

My .244 was made in 1957, and I use the Hornady 87 grain bullet, which it shoots very well. My 722 is the most beautiful 700 series Remington that I have ever seen. Even though it is not stamped as such, it has magnificent wood and is hand checkered as if it was a higher grade rifle.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye chambered in 6MM Remington. I read that the 6MM Rem was one of the favorite calibers of Col. Jeff Cooper. I found a new one at a gun show back in the early 90s. It's my favorite rifle and caliber because of it's dependable strong action, the caliber versatility, and the accuracy I have achieved with my hand-loads. I mainly use it for pronghorn hunting and have taken many, all one shot kills, out to 300 yards. I have used it for elk hunting as a back-up rifle and have taken three elk, one bull and two cows, all one shot kills. All three elk were within 150 yards. The accuracy is great with 100 grain Speer SPBT loaded with 46 grains of H4831 at 3000 FPS. It's a devastating round on coyotes and other small varmints. It's an all around great cartridge and I'm glad that I found it years ago. It has its limits but if it's kept within it will take about any game up to and including elk. Great video and information.

Oh man! I love my 6mm rifle! Back in the late seventies I was looking for a rifle that was good on varmints and deer hunting. It was a decision between the 243 and the 6 mm. The guy behind the counter in the gun store shared with me about his experience with the 6mm. He hand loaded and with the longer neck of the 6mm it was easier. He went Elk hunting every year and got his tag filled. He would load it with a hotter load . Also his rifle being a carbine was lighter and easier to carry in the mountains. Well he sold me on the 6mm! He said the shocking power was amazing! I didn’t have much money in those days so I hand loaded it with the Lee loader one round at a time and would buy a box of shell every once in a while lol! Bought a $18.00 dollar scope from JCPenney and started hunting with it. Ha my friend that I hunted with said that cheap scope would not hold up. But it did! Not much kick to the rifle! I have shot all kinds of varmints and deer and even a few turkeys at long range. I couldn’t believe how fast it was. I could shoot a gallon milk jug filled with with water and it would blow up about six foot in the air and would be coming back down before the recoil on my shoulder was done. I was very upset when I couldn’t ever found a box of shells any more. Thank you so much for your review of the 6mm. I wish they would re think this. Love the review on the different of the 243 and 6.5 Creedmore Ha most people look at you like you’re crazy if you ask about the 6mm. lol!

31 years ago, I had a Remington model 600 rebarreled with a 1 in 14" twist heavy stainless barrel in 6mm Ackley Improved. My plan, at the time, was to use 60 grain Sierra bullets which worked very well on the poor local groundhogs. It remains accurate and very, very fast.

About 20 years ago I had a 270 built by an excellent smith in Hobbs, NM. His cartridge of choice was the 22-6mm Remington. At that time the states I mostly hunted in required 6mm/243 caliber and larger to hunt big game so I was not intrigued to entertain building one of his favorites but I didn't think to consider the 6mmRem itself - mostly because at that time I felt like a 270 was the smallest caliber I'd be willing to hunt with. He told me several stories of dropping pronghorn, mulies at 300+ yards with his 22 wildcat. We talked bullets and I asked if he'd ever tried the Swift Scirocco IIs. He had not. I told him that in my experience, if you can find a load for this picky bullet it's quite amazing on game and accuracy. He bought some and gauged them on his Internal Concentricity Comparator (Vern Juenke Machine). He stated they were the most concentric factory bullets he'd ever tested. Anyway, according to him, the 22-6mmRem was more popular than the parent cartridge. Since he was a barrel maker, it didn't matter to him if it shot out quickly.

I have a 6mm in a rem700 vls loaded with a 60 grain Serra hollow point shoots one hole at 200 yards @ 4100 fps. I’ve pushed it to as high as 4300 fps but started to shoot a little erratic around 4250 fps. An old timer told me that h335 is the magic for 6mm but couldn’t find data in new manual so I got out my old manuals from the 60s and found the Data and worked it up. Wow

Well my grandpa had a gun he wanted to shoot my first deer with . It was a semi-auto Remington in 244 . I remember the old blue box of 90 grain deer bullets . I took 2 deer with that rifle before he died (early, car wreck , I was 15) never saw any of his guns again . A cousin who never knew him got all 18 guns . 😢. It was awesome and yes I’m going to be building a Remington 700 in 6mm with a heavy bull barrel with 1:8twist about 26” long . And every time I take it out I’ll be thinking about grandpa. That’s why I’m checking out the RU-vid vids on 6mm Remington.

I bought my wife one more than 25 years ago. I hurt my shoulder and used it. She bought me a ruger m2 in it after for our anniversary that year. Have the grandchildren one each and found one for my nephew. 3 ruger 77 1 ruger m2 a rem 700 heavy barrel and a old cz j9 mauser. My wife had 16 one shot stops on deer. I have had 39 one shot drops on deer , hog, coyotes and turkey. I think its better than the win 243 and the 6mm creedmoor. My wife used old rem green and white box rem 80gr And i use hornady frontier interlock when they loaded them then went to the federal 80gr blue box. The 700 with rem 100gr corlock will punch out a very nice 5 shot group that a quarter will cover at a 100yds And has taken coyotes out a little past 500yds Absolutely love the round. I am just worried that with the crazy stuff ammo is doing will the manufacturer go back to loading it. If you buy one and can find the ammo buy a lot of it if you can.

The .244 got the faster twist rate in 1958. Only the first 3 production years of the Remington 722 rifle had the 1-12". I have a couple of these rifles marked .244 with both twists. The old school 100 gr. bullets of the time shoot fine in the 1-12". Gun writers seem to parrot the same myths without ever testing and then the public reads it and repeats it.

You're hitting all of my favs. .222 Rem and now 6mm Rem. I have a custom 6mm based on a BRNO action with a Sile bull barrel with 1:10 twist. That gun is a tack driver, and can handle the heavier bullets at a higher velocity than the .243. I also have a Mauser-based Voere Model 2165 in .243 Win., which is also a great shooter.

You're right. It's a great cartridge and it's very much underrated. I have a Rem. 700 adl chambered for it and I've just started experimenting with loads for it, 90-100 grain Hot Cor and Pro Hunter. I have no intention of loading it for max velocity because I just can't replace that beautiful barrel and it's faster than it needs to be for hunting anyway. It would be a ton of fun to experiment with velocity in a beater rifle, though. I just have too much respect for older American craftsmanship to push it near the limit for very long. Great video!

Spot on! The 243 Rockchucker was in that race for a while but the 1/12 twist rate doomed it! I have a 243 RC and worked up a .75" group load with a Nosler Partition bullet that does very well on deer sized animals! I also have a 6mm Remington that I like a lot in a Model 700. I load for all my rifles and brass has been a challenge to find for the 6mm Rem as well as .257 Roberts which I use to convert to .243 Rockchucker!

To be fair, W8nchester has made some errors as well. The one that sticks out in my mind is the .284 Win. They had a cartridge that was way ahead of its time, and really a great cartridge, that they put in that lever action and a semi-auto. I think if they put that thing in tge model 70, the 280 is probably obsolete. You had the short, fat, sharp shouldered 7mm cartridge in 1963, but it didn't take off because it was in the wrong guns.

For a good experienced hand loader. The 6 mm PPC is a good one You can get the 220 Russian from Lester Bruno Out of arizona that's already fireformed and stuff And the 6 mm BR you can buy Brass for 6MM B R. That's probably 2 Of the most accurate 6 MM you can Get The 6MM PPC is possibly the most accurate caliber in the world.
@MrGsteele
@MrGsteele 6 месяцев назад
6mm velocity in a carbine ~equals the .243 in a rifle, so you gain all the .243's goodness in a more compact, lighter, handier gun, that will handle heavier bullets to boot (6mm is 1:8, .243 is 1:9 twist). A Remington Mohawk is a super combination in 6mm. The .244 failed on three counts: original twist of 1:10, max bullet weight available off-shelf of 90 grains, and slightly higher cost for Remington rifles than Winchester. The Model 70 also had an aura, with its Mauser-like controlled feed. Once the .243 was established and being extolled by the gun writers, Remington could not overcome the market influence - even with the name change to 6mm and the increased twist rate to 1:8; the .243 already owned the niche.

Great review 👍 I am a big fan of the 6mm rem. I have a model 700 24 in varmint barrel . That I bought 45 years ago. It absolutely shoots lights out. Gophers out past 300 yards Whitetail past 300. And moose out to 100 . Coyotes past 500. With 70 to 105 gr bullets. It just performs great. It sat in the safe for about 10 years and I decided to put it back to use. So I put in a trigger tech trigger and a MDT chassis. And a Falcon Endura 3 1/2 -25 x56 scope And now hitting steel at 750 yards. Wow Who said you can’t teach an old Dog new tricks.!!! I really think they should redesign it with a 1-8 or a 1-7.5 twist so it can use the new heavier high BC bullets ! I would buy one in a heartbeat 👍

The only thing the 243 has over the 6MM is popularity. In all measures the 6MM is superior to the 243. Marketers selling new rifles will keep introducing newer cartridges until the market is confused by it all. Then the new junk will be pressed to stay on the shelves. The Winchester short magnum line is a great example of the failure of new rounds, making those newer rifles obsolete. I doubt the ammo manufacturers will drop the older stuff that millions of rifles are chambered for.
