Born in Pákozd, Rigó Jancsi gained popularity in the major cities of Europe not only for his musical talent but also due to a scandalous love story that truly made him famous. In 1896, he performed at a Parisian restaurant, where one evening, the Belgian Prince of Chimay and Olympic fencer dined with his much younger wife, the daughter of an American steel magnate.
Millionaire Claire Ward fell madly in love with the fiery-eyed violinist at first sight and left her husband for him. Their story stirred up a great deal of controversy in the tabloids of the time, and when Jancsi divorced his wife, Mariska, the daughter of Prímás Józsi Barcza from Kaposvár, even the Országos Hírlap, under the editorship of Kálmán Mikszáth, reported on the divorce proceedings....
