A solution to getting light into hard to reach places, without the need for a crane. UPDATE: The video says the max load is 44lb (20kg), which is actually the weight of the stand - the max payload when fully extended is 20lbs (9kg).

Thank you. Fun to see both of these. Haven’t used either yet, but I’m intrigued.

For anyone looking to achieve this without spending $1000, you do do have another perfectly valid solution; creating a menace arm with a 1-1/4" pipe boom kit, 3 ratchet straps, a length of 1-1/4" schedule 40 aluminum pipe (aka speedrail), a medium overhead roller stand, and a bunch of sandbags. Its a couple hundred bucks cheaper, will let you roll the whole unit around, and the pieces are all very useful in situations other than building a menace arm, so it's money well spent. The advantage of a menace arm like like over a standard telescoping boom is that youre using the tension of the ratchet straps to counteract the force of gravity rather than using a bunch of sandbags as a counter weight which makes the whole thing heavier unnecessarily and makes it that much more difficult to raise .

I know I'm late to this, but the advantage of the Mini Max and, er, Maxi(?) Max is that they don't have-to use the technical term-the bit sticking out the back. This means they can be put more or less flush against walls or in corners in tight spaces, whereas the conventional menace arm needs a bit poking out (another technical term, I'm afraid) of the back, which could mean that it creeps into the shot.

Dont get me wrong, I love the convenience of a good roller stand. But you're missing some key advantages of this system vs a menace arm - this things at least a good 10 minutes faster to set-up vs a menace arm. - menace arms need sandbags on the arm itself making it harder to hoist in the air - this is easier to pack up and has a smaller footprint - this doubles as a 16 ft stand. - can be used on uneven ground - can be used against a wall - sandbags are easy to place and low to the ground. - You can change the boom angle while it's hoisted from the ground Your menace arm solution isn't much cheaper if you're shooting for the same parts quality and size. But it does roll.

Menace arm looks cool. If one isn’t sure about a piece of equipment, please test at the rental house first. WRT to sandbags, bag the snot out of it. Conditions change, accidents happen.

Mini Max 1200.00. MEGA-litecloth 750.00. = 1950.00. Another solution: 3 super clamps with 2 10' fence poles from Home Depot 100.00. 86” Soft Silver PLM™ Umbrella with sock 90.00. Godox VL200 LED Video Light 349.00. = 550.00. Put Super Clamps on top of two tripods and put one or two fence poles across. Put 3rd Super Clamp in middle to hang light. This takes up less room on a set. I have a Kyack mount on top of my SUV to carry the poles. Save 1400.00 and can be used to mount microphones, lights, etc..The sock over the umbrella has the look of a book light because you point the light into the umbrella and then it bounces back into the sock "diffusion" Thanks me later.

I like the budget solution, but then you have 2 tripods to keep out of shot instead of one mini max. You can rent the mini max for $75 a day and then you don't have to store anything. That was my solution.

I have been looking at this tripod and I wish it had lock able casters on (that you could take off if needed, like when putting it in a stair). It also gets pretty expensiv from shipping it over seas. Apart from this I dig it alot. The big brother is cool but way out of my pockets currently. But its cool with its hoist and that it got wheels and of course the giant reach it has.

An 1-1/4" speedrail menace arm kit sounds perfect for you :) the hardware kit is wayyy cheaper to ship and you can just buy the speedrail locally. Put it on an overhead roller stand, it's still cheaper than the max mini and more versatile!

I’m not sure, but I think a Matthews Drop Down could solve your problem with keeping the light horizontal. There are baby and junior versions that are like a pin with a hinge in the middle to let gravity keep it level. I’m sure you could rent one in Los Angeles. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/33152-REG/Matthews_427804_Baby_Drop_Down.html If you don’t recall, you had to keep adjusting your panel light after extending the max arm, and it was difficult to get the correct angle from the ground to keep the panel horizontal.

Hi there cap'n. Question. Can you compare this and the Kupo Junior Boom stand? In the market for one of these. Really want to know the deets of max extension overhead when the height is fully extended.

sorry, this may sound stupid, but i looked online from your link, but does the mega light actually have lights in it? or is it just the material and stands etc? cause the amazon link doesn't show any lights ha and doesn't talk about any LED's
