Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean took a walk on the dark side on when he met up with thrash-metal pioneer Gary Holt of Exodus for a look at the gear that power his brutal riffs during the band’s tour in support of their latest album, 'Blood In Blood Out.'
Holt tours exclusively with a collection of ESP guitars. His #1 is a signature model loaded with EMG pickups (89R in the neck and 81 in the bridge), Floyd Rose bridge, and Gotoh tuners with a Liquid Metal Lava finish.
Later in the set Holt moves to a ESP LTD GH-600 in basic black that sports the same EMG pickups. All of his guitars are strung with custom Dunlop .010-.050 Heavy Core strings.
To continue learning about the gear behind Holt's tone, visit: bit.ly/GaryHoltRR

I almost bought one today. But I decided if Gary can play his LTD version live, I should be happy with that. I had the resources, but figured I could buy a couple of really nice guitars with that money. A beautiful guitar nonetheless. Law of diminishing returns made me come to my senses.

Andrew Stace Yea, custom shop ESP prices have just skyrocketed in recent years. I think a lot of it is import costs. Even here in the states that guitar goes for around $5000.Go with an LTD EC-1000. Amazing guitar for the price. In my opinion ESP's LTD line is the absolute best bang for the buck. Ive played $3000 Gibson Les Paul customs that don't feel half as good as my Eclipse.
@thomasramsey6642
@thomasramsey6642 9 лет назад
Really? Damn
@LinhNguyen-im4uu
@LinhNguyen-im4uu 9 лет назад
DarkRob316 The price increase was because the Signature line is now made in the Japanese custom shop. Before they were mass produced in a Japanese factory and commanded roughly the same price as ESP Standard guitars as they are at the same level. With all the recent rebranding, the name ESP is now pretty much for guitars that are made in the custom shop (US or Japan). All the mass produced ones are now called E-II, LTD, fuckyoupeasantsforbeingpoor, etc. but certainly not ESP.
@dkyelak

@LinhNguyen-im4uu
@LinhNguyen-im4uu 9 лет назад
+dkyelak Yep, the LTD Deluxe line is pretty killer. Don't get me wrong, mass produced guitars these days are by no means bad. You get a lot of guitar for the money, especially in the $600-1000 price range. My old EC-1000 handles and plays better than all the Gibson LPs I have tried until now, including a $4000 Custom.

I didn't get: is the kemper powered through the Marshall or is it going straight to the mixer?
@joshuacole6543
@joshuacole6543 8 лет назад
He runs it into the Marshall which acts as a power amp, which goes into a cab, so he basically is creating a real amp with that setup. They'll either send the line-out from the Kemper into the mixer, or mic the cab like usual.

Trust me, unless your hearing is perfect, and nobody that plays guitar for any length of time has perfect hearing. LOL If you can BARELY hear a difference in a studio there's no way you could hear a difference live onstage. There is so much control you have with the Kemper, pick attack, tube sag, numerous other great stuff. People will always use a tube amp but why have 5-10 tube amps lying around when you can Profile somebody's Dumble Silver Slinger $500K amp :-)
@DarkRob316
@DarkRob316 9 лет назад
hawg427 Agreed. The truth is most musicians get indoctrinated into a particular school of thought early on and it can be tough to break free of those belief systems."Nothing beats a tube amp" is one such school of thought. And certainly not one without merit. I belonged to that school of thought for a long time, I still do. Indeed a cranked up Marshall or Mesa stack is a glorious sound.But its all about application. What do you need your amp to do. I live in a small apartment with neighbors everywhere. A cranked tube amp is unviable for me. Its not the right application. The last thing I ever thought I would end up with in my old age is a little 30 watt Line 6. But its absolutely perfect for the application I use it for. Likewise, Kempers and Axe FX's are fantastic devices for having access to a multitude of very realistic and varied tones, in a compact easy to use rig. You cant beat it for the application.Does that make me a traitor to all the Marshalls and Boogies Ive used over the years for saying so? Maybe. But who cares? I still love all the Marshalls and Boogies Ive owned. Embracing something new doesn't mean you have to throw away the old. You just have a new tool now as well. PS. Ive been playing guitar for 25 years and my hearing is shot to hell lol.
@dkyelak
@dkyelak 9 лет назад
+DarkRob316 Well said. Same here except I have a Peavey Vypyr. Amp companies might be a bit nervous that a little toaster can do the job. One could buy an expensive head, profile it and then return it while keeping the profile. Amp companies will need to adapt. In the meantime, they will keep telling people there is no substitute for their products. I am older too and if I was starting over I would go for a Kemper.

Michael Phillips I just purchased the powered Rack model about a Month ago and it is awesome! :-) That's all I can say.
@ihatepop13
@ihatepop13 9 лет назад
Michael Phillips They sound good but there is definitely something lacking from them. I got the chance to play one and was blown away by the tones, but it reacts to signal differently than a tube amp would. You can't really roll back the volume on your guitar to clean up your signal (at least on the model I was trying). It's pretty much either full volume or off. That's good if you play metal or punk and all you do is bridge pickup on your distortion channel, but any other genre that you sometimes roll back on your guitar volume for a cleaner sound won't work. I's still, without a doubt, go with a tube head for that pricetag. It just has something that the Kemper misses.
@beatnik1
@beatnik1 9 лет назад
iHatePop Of course, I'm sure something's lacking. It's usually that way with most digital and solid state amps. Most of the videos I've seen, Kempers are always used in studio.

Oh yeah. My last favorite exodus album. Impact. The guitars sound mad. Wicked. Just started focusing on different bands after that album. That was the 80s my man. Marshalls, Laney AOR, ADA, very high gain usually with a dark tube sound IMHO. Ex. ADA mp1 and 2 ...very YJM George lynch and Brian May sounding stuff. But recordings were analog so gear was just set differently. Sometimes not very well. Exodus always makes sure their guitars are heard. (Haired)
