Article and photos: bit.ly/GuthrieT...
Premier Guitar dropped in to Guthrie Trapp’s Nashville studio between sessions and checked out Trapp’s no-nonsense rig, which includes blackface amps, a vintage 335 and an axe carved out of wood from a compost pile.
Although Trapp owns other guitars, he basically gets it all done with two very different axes. His No. 1 is his Floyd Cassista T-style with an ancient redwood body and a maple neck.
When Trapp wants to change it up he goes with his stock 1969 Gibson ES-335 w/ trapeze tailpiece. Both guitars are strung with D’Addario NYXL .010-.046 strings.
To continue learning about Trapp's gear, visit: bit.ly/GuthrieT...

Guthrie's comment at 16:30 is fantastic. "Don't obsess so much over gear. Just get out there and play the guitar ... I think people get a little too much into the gear and less about the playing. And that's the most important part.... All this gear stuff can be a distraction."
@waynesmith747
@waynesmith747 9 лет назад
how true,its funny how people chase tone when "the tone" is their influence over any instrument, not the instrument/gear itself.case in point,listen to say"eddie van halen" or anyone reputable,consistent and recognizable play on any gear and you instantly know its them regardless of guitar,effects or amp. so as a wise man once said"tone is in your fingers" and that's just the way it is.
@alandeniston9229

+rasm0225 I am guilty of that. I need to spend more time practicing and less time checking out Gear on You Tube.

+wayne smith yes but he also said that when he picks a different guitar he plays differently ;) so is the same with pedals and amps, their sound will influence different playing different ideas etc ... they are all the to inspire various ideas/feels. But yes I agree that obsessing over gear is not the answer but testing gear and letting it provoke some genius inside of you yes sure test as many as you can. If all is in the fingers than we would need no instrument AT ALL :) you need the pickups (but which alnico, ceramics, humbucker, single coil, P90) you need the pedals, you need an amp or amps (Steve Ray Vaughan ran a Fender into a Marshall if Im not mistaken) so gear is of importance to find "that sound" one is happy with it. So, you need both :) gear and fingers! End of sermon ;)

I thought it was a little tongue-in-cheek to mention gear obsession whilst being interviewed on rig rundown, a series dedicated to gear obsession.

Great rundown but to me the Flint is redundant with black face fender reverb amps
@pereztube2
@pereztube2 8 лет назад
+Eric sin sinner yeah could be if you would only use the "60s" reverb setting and the fenderish tremolo. the 63 harmonic trem setting is pretty good. its a good thing to have on your board if you got the space.

@shckltnebay 8 лет назад
Nodald T. Rump Or if you have an extra $300 laying around
@pereztube2
@pereztube2 8 лет назад
+Eric sin sinner true they are very expensive. But if your amp doesn't have trem or verb it's better than buying a big 600 -1500 dollar unit(very few of which have trem) Strymon make some of the best quality pedals you could buy. Sorry for getting so far away from the point of the original comment haha, I just really like that pedal

Nodald T. Rump Strymon is a great company, I think the BigSky and Mobius would be a better choice.
@dmargo1045
@dmargo1045 7 лет назад
The Flint is much more versatile than the (wonderful) built in reverb. And if you're on a shaky stage the Flint won't crash and rumble like the Fender reverb. I used my pedal reverb the other night with my Princeton Reverb for that very reason.

60 year old technology and they never beat it? John really needs to get out more. They can actually intonate a guitar completely, and have it stay in tune through an earth quake. Staggered tuners no need for a string tree. Carvin makes necks that you can take in a sauna and not have to adjust the truss rod. Listen to some of the old timers talk about LP's. They will say things like "this is a good one" "This one is really resonant" It's because the quality is so hit and miss. I love the old guitars too, but I'll never drink the Kool-Aid.
@NickLandess
@NickLandess 8 лет назад
... you need to stop drinking the tech kool-aid. There is a reason that session players continue to play tele and sg and strat and lp modeled guitars (60 year old technology), and are, in general, *not* playing Carvin necks, no matter how earthquake proof they are. There is a tonal quality to that 60 year old technology that has in fact, not really been improved upon. Intonation is, yes, extremely important. But tone is king.
@bloozedaddy
@bloozedaddy 7 лет назад
I guess you didn't notice the bridge pieces are staggered and not vintage tele style. He was talking more about the simplicity of two pups and simple knobs...makes you play great instead of relying on gizmos . The guys in Nashville can play with a guitar/cord/amp....doesn't mean pedals and amps/guitars don't matter...just that those are the important part of being a player.
