Never miss a Rig Rundown: bit.ly/PG-RRnew...
John Bohlinger hung with John Oates and Shane Theriot before soundcheck at a recent sold-out show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Each night, the guitar duo splits duties on the vast catalog of platinum-selling hits that have propelled the group for nearly 40 years.
This 1958 Fender Stratocaster has been featured on some of Hall and Oates’ biggest hits. Oates purchased it in 1973 and since then the original finish has been removed and the body was routed to fit humbuckers. The bridge pickup is a Gibson PAF and the neck pickup is a very early PAF-style ’bucker from Seymour Duncan. He keeps the Strat strung up with D’Addario XL116 (.011-.052) strings.
Oates also brings this TV Jones Model 10 in Lake Placid Blue on the road. It features TV Jones pickups, Sperzel tuners, and a Bigsby B5 with Vibramate Spoiler.
Shane Theriot’s No. 1 is a 2014 Gerard Melancon Aged Artist with a roasted maple neck, rosewood fretboard, Gotoh bridge, and vintage Kluson tuners. The guitar is strung D’Addario NYXL (.011-.049) strings and tuned down a half step.

When people do their own rig rundowns like this they go right up in my estimation. To take half hour out for their fans it really costs nothing and says a lot.

Love & share Bohlinger's geeky curiosity in all the rundowns. A bit concerned about his vibe though. Is he fired up or just super american....? :) Took the mellow Shane minutes to slow him down to a shared frequency. The Fuchs sounds amazing.

I grew up on the same street as Shane.(Sako Drive in Raceland, La). He and my older brother Billy were friends and Shane's younger brother Brent and I were friends. Shane used to ride the bus with his guitar everyday. He had great parents too. They bought him a new Marshall half stack as soon as he started playing. I was also friends with luthier Gerard Melancon(recently passed). The first time we met, I had him build me a killer Super Strat style mahogany body w/ quilt maple top. When I put it together, it sounded like crap! When I asked him why, he said most of his freshly cut guitars did that and to just give it about two weeks to "let the woods marry". I thought to myself, "There's no way!" but everyday it got better & better and after a couple weeks, the guitar had fully bloomed and sounded amazing! Gerard was a great luthier(ralmost relgious about wood) and a great guy too. RIP Gerard.

Seymour Duncan is the source of so many rock n' roll gear fiascos. Supposedly the Jeff Beck model was supposed to be for another guitar player and he accidentally sent out the wrong ones to both players, but both players liked the ones they got so much that ultimately the Jeff Beck model was originally a not-Jeff Beck model.

I agree with John 100% - the Pro Reverb is THE perfect Fender amp for gigging with a full band. The Vibrolux Reverb is the same amp with 10" speakers. Both are as good as it gets. For recording I prefer the Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb, but for hanging with drummers and bass players on a stage and having just the right amount of clean headroom....The Pro is the cat's behind!
@billhannaford4488

@@billhannaford4488 That's a really interesting comment, Bill. To me and most guys I know who record with Princetons, that little monster provides more mid-range growl than any other Fender amp! The "scoopy" hi-fi, chimey character is something I associate much more with the Deluxe Reverb. Of course, a lot of it has to do with the kind of speaker, but to my ears the PR has a really nice mid-range. We all hear something different, for sure!
