Thats the beauty of a straight up rock and roll band, theres not 3 miles of wiring through processors, pitch shift, trigger channels, etc. , just guitar-wireless- a few pedals- amp.
So many bands and musicians lost equipment in the Nashville flood - why didn't they ever consider the inevitability of a flood eventually? Now they will likely store instruments on the second floor, not first floor or basement. The same thing happened in New Orleans. I don't think musicians in those cities will be making that mistake again, at least they better not - more flooding seems likely...? I always enjoy the interviews by Rebecca Dirks, who does an excellent job - her good looks and engaging personality sauce the interviews nicely!
Saw Skynyrd at Blossom Music Center in Akron, Ohio 2 summers ago....Gary and Rickey got into a guitar war and tried to blow each other off the stage.....I would call it a wash....When the concert was over they walked off the stage arm in arm laughing and smiling.....I'm here to tell ya it was awesome....Never will forget it !!!
These guys are just straight guitar players. Rossington's amp/rig is far more simple than I expected. Just goes to show that you don't need more computer technology than launched the space shuttle to get a good tone.
I recently went through a flood myself! refinished my tele and it sounds better now than it did before. and it is beat to shit from crashing up against the garage walls at my drummers house.
@@billyrouse4813 Yes I do, I was 18 at the time, about the same age as Ed,my crowd was all about music and we hung onto every bit of info about every band we could get. It was a wonderful carefree time, but I messed it all up with the two most powerful words in the English language,"I Do".
I think Gary Rossington still uses his old Peavey Mace Amps. They are set up behind the signature amps which are out front for advertisement purposes. As most guitar players know, when you find a tone that you really like ( and that defines you as much as Gary's does) you don't mess with it. As for Rickey Medlocke, I've heard of Wizard Amps, but his sound sure as hell screams Marshall.
Incorrect, but kinda correct. It's always been "for advertisement purposes," and yes, I like how you put that, haha. Even back in the day (ya'know, when they were actually still Lynyrd Skynyrd), They rewired those Peavey amps to run more like Marshalls. As for Rickey Medlocke, he'd have to stand on Gary's shoulders to kiss Allen Collins' ass.
Steve and Allen mostly just used their volume and tone knobs and Peavey Mace amps. Skynyrd was the big Peavey endorsee in those days. It's funny to see Skynyrd using such a big rig these days when in the old days there was hardly any special gear.
@rjworks13 The Original LP he played with, Berniece, is not chambered. I guess with age and having a catalog of songs that forces you to play at least 2 hours every show, the lighter guitar takes less of a toll on his body.
I don't get all the hate in this video. I agree, simple is better. As a guitarist in a working band myself, I have been moving to a simple rig as well, less is better, easier - plug and play. I play a Gibson LP/SG >> Morley Wah, Boss TU-3 Tuner, Black Arts Pharaoh Fuzz, 80s Peavey Butcher, Orange PPC412 (V30s). Loud, thick, and amazing tone. It's amazing how many people come up to me after a show and say they used to own a Butcher and regret selling it. Mace is next for me.
What kind of wood are the GibsonLes Paul guitars? Because you said they were light. Because some of the old ones used to made out mahogany wood! They were kind of heavy!
Every Les Paul shown in the video is made of mahogany, but the tech said they’re chambered to take out the weight. Not to mention that some mahogany are naturally lighter as well.
The high action is for strong fingers and country slide guitar players. I was surprised to hear that Gary, a rock musician likes the action as high as possible. Probably helps eliminate any buzzing and gets cleaner slow slides like on Freebird.
How high does he go on the action? Not that it matters much here I can find out on Facebook from the Guitarist from Lynette Skynyrd Cathy Lauer a Friend of mine or Johnny Colt another Friend directly tied to Skynyrd himself as Bassist.
@wweoutsider91 it's just a les paul truss rod cover. maybe they took the the sg cover off to adjust the truss rod and lost it and replaced it with whatever they could find i don't think gibson would have put one on from the shop
@@georgeprice7922 pretty sure Allens explorer is in the R&R hall of fame. Is been said Allens daughters own all of Allens guitars and keep them safe and sound.
So he uses Gibson Custom Shop guitar, I like the fact that all his Original Gibson's are in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. I wish one of mine go in there :P Sucks about the floods huh.
@wweoutsider91 - Yeah, but they're probably re-issue models, so putting the "Les Paul" truss rod cover on them would be historically accurate. They didn't show the big piece of wire Gary sticks under the strings up by the nut to raise the action for the slide part of Free Bird. Unless he's not doing that anymore (which would be hard to believe, after all these years)
Found a pic that shows the back of Gary's Penta, the cabs have been gutted and the head isn't even hooked up, the cabs had other amps inserted inside of them.. Another promo tool straight from peavey tryin to sell the penta!! They done the same thing when the xxx came out.. I have a pic of it with his original mace amp in the xxx head.. If peavey if were to re-release the mace watch and see how quick ya see those on stage instead of the penta, I'm just sayin....
According to Peavey's site the Rossington amp uses EL34s not 6L6 tubes. There is no reason that the amp couldnt be modded to take 6L6s but it seems odd that he would mod his sig head when Peavey will bow down for these guys. Maybe the tech is mistaken at a pretty girl asking a technical question. He did look a little shocked
Still love them. Yea, they have new guys except Gary and Ricky. So what...Ricky was one of the first original members. A lot of people don't know that. Skynyrd still Smokes...
@kustomkid1968 I agree with you about Rickey, he's the man! Gary probably sounded fricken amazing. But I disagree about Sparky, he is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Skynyrd's so much tighter since he joined. Listen to Sweet Home Alabama live in 1997, then listen to it with Sparky playing, you can tell the difference within the 30seconds. I personally think this is the best post-crash lineup (nothing beats the original)
Hi, saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in Berlin last night and I paid over 65€ for a standing ticket that, with my surprise, was located in a corridor upstairs, where the bars are. No speakers pointed in that direction in both wings, the sound was so bad over there I couldn’t even hear the drums. Ridiculous. Then I moved to the centre and from there at least the sound was slightly better, though with a lot of booming because it's under the upper ring and the ceiling reflects the sound heavily. The sound guy had probably no idea of how the "sound" was up there because he was staying down on the parterre. A location good for a sport event but for sure not for a concert. Mind you, when your fans are listening to your gigs this way it doesn't really matter if you're playing a Gibson or an Epiphone, a Fender or a Squire, you can save your money and use cheap guitars. Sorry but I'm pissed, I was waiting for that concert since a long long time and it was highly disappointing to see it that way.
Jude Misura Allen also had a Strat with a Telecaster neck which was used ONLY for "Sweet Home Alabama" . However, the amps ranged from Marshall 100 watt heads through Peavey cabinets and Peavey Mace amplifiers as well. (as did Gary and - depending on the era - Ed King or Steve Gaines).
Timothy Bradley * Yeah, and sound check didn't do very good job at protecting the gear ! Sure they had alarm secured systems and climate controlled humidifiers but they didn't have ANYTHING strong enough for mother nature. 😉
That's because Sound Check in Nashville is right next to Cumberland River do a google search of Sound Check Nashville, TN and click on the Google maps part and you'll see why a lot artist lost a lot stuff at that place.
