Guitar icon Peter Frampton invites Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger to his Nashville rehearsal studio to talk and demonstrate his sprawling live setup.
The “Phenix” is Frampton’s famous, modified 1954 Les Paul Custom from the cover of Frampton Comes Alive. The name refers to the mythical bird that was raised from the ashes. This guitar, thought to be destroyed and lost for over 30 years-even surviving a plane crash in Venezuela-recently found its way back home to Frampton. To commemorate this historic guitar, Gibson has recreated a very small, exclusive run of reproductions with every burn, scratch, ding, and crack faithfully copied to match Frampton’s original.
This 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously belonged to famed songwriter JJ Cale and is affectionately named “Paulina.” With the exception of the bridge and tuning keys, it’s completely original. The original bridge was so badly worn that accurately intonating the instrument was impossible. It was replaced by a relic’d TonePro bridge to keep the guitar aesthetically correct.

I was watching a rock documentary on Peter Frampton and apparently he was walking down the street with his guitar in NY for a gig and David B was driving by. The two reconnected and David asked him to play on his album. Peter's wife, who is the mother of his youngest child, a daughter who happens to act and was seen in the film weddingcrashers, told Peter to stay humble when he goes into the studio. And she reminded him that he was not there to play lead but was there to add to David's sound. Peter said it was this wise advse from his wife that helped him to get back on track. I think he went on tour with Bowie afterward. And then he recorded a new album with Bowie produced or co-produced.

@@ebay9302 What makes you say that? I met him while he was mowing his own lawn next door to my old business partner's house in Brentwood Tennessee in 2004 and he was gentle, pleasant, kind, nice and totally genuine and real with me, some random guy who interupted him over the fence while he was mowing his own lawn. We talked about his electrocution event and his future plans, which at the time were to potentially move to where his elderly parents lived to care for them in their old age. He said he wasn't likely to do much more hardcore touring or playing, but at the time, he was also sweating in the tennessee heat in his backyard, talking to stranger about his dying parents. Hardly a jovial discussion, but definitely a genuine one, without a shred of dickheadedness about it whatsever. Change my mind.

A true gentleman. Only a handful of people in the world compares to Peter Frampton in terms of stage experience and knowledge on guitar gear. Note that he always says that some particular gear "works" for him and some "don't work", but it could work for someone else (e.g. the radio transmitters). Very much the opposite of self-proclaimed experts on comment sections that love to say that a certain guitar or pedal "sucks" or is "stupid". Let us all learn with this man, kids.

Great to hear the stories and history behind the sound. It's hard to believe this August it will be 40 years ago me and 70,000 or so other folks heard and saw this man and guitar at Hawthorne Race Track in Cicero, Il. Gary wright, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Yes all shared the stage that day. What a day! Peter had a different hair cut back then but so did I! Great to see him still active and looking healthy. Thanks PG, this brought up some great memories for me!
