Premier Guitar's Jason Shadrick is on location in Chicago, IL, where he catches up with Pink guitarist Justin Derrico-also of "The Voice" fame- and bassist Eva Gardner. Justin explains the 20 guitars he travels with, why he can't get enough of his Bogners, and how he employs his rack full of stompboxes.

JD is awesome. The consummate players-player. The guy absolutely plays his ass off, loves the guitar and everything associated with it. The rig construction is absolutely beautiful. You can tell ToneMerchants' rig builds just by lookin at them. Dave Friedman did an amazing job building it. Flawless.

What Justin said about Dunlop Crybaby 535Q wah pedal is "he tends to keep it on the higher range or the highest range". I have a Dimebag Darrell Signature Crybaby From Hell wah pedal that I got for my 17th birthday in February. Nice camo paint job. I keep it the range selector either position #6 (the deep throaty tone; the darker sound I get), position #3 with the "fine-tune" control counter-clockwise with punchy low-end, position #4 (almost towards the lower range) and position 1 (the brighter sound) with the "fine-tune" control clockwise at 2.2 kilohertz.

Mr. Justin Derrico's a nice dude who is grateful. Those that are dissin' him are just jealous. Ms. Eva Gardner is a delicious combination of smart and cute; I loved her immediately. Pink has a great stringed instrument team backin' her sassy ass up!

I used to have the BOSS BF-3 flanger on my pedalboard. Loved it when I used it. Quick tip for that pedal: zero the controls except dime the level. It's a cool delay type sound. I actually got that from BOSS themselves.

EVA! Cutie and a rocking bassist! We used to sell Rotosounds in my brother's music store in Tallahassee, FL in the early-mid '70s ... That bass player named "McVie" came in one day and asked me if we had any sets, and I was out!! And was too busy to even talk to him!! Argghh! NOTHING like an Ampeg SVT bass amp. Woof.

Right. Ive been playing for forty years. Always try to take care of my instruments, and not ding or damage them. I hate "scars". Natural wear, earned after many years on an instrument, fine. Shows what you've been doing. Relicing? Posing.

Weird.... I was just thinking about Oasis for some reason and Live Forever started playing. I will say this: Pink puts on a fucking great show. It's fuckin' rock n' roll with her. I highly recommend watching her Funhouse Live in Australia DVD. This is coming from a 90s Alt-Rock guy. If I had a daughter she'd be listening to Pink all live-long day. Incredible, soulful singer as well as a great songwriter and good role model. She is head above shoulders the best thing in Pop as a person goes.

You don't absolutely need to be a gear head to be a professional musician, some guys know next to nothing about the techy stuff but just know what sounds they like and stick to a basic setup. Justin went to GIT and plays a bunch of sessions as well as being the house guitarist on The Voice so he has to keep on top of all this stuff.
@WesElder

I agree! However, I wonder how much easier life would be if Justin would make the same switch you did. I'd be so concerned that something would break during a show.

Some of you are way too harsh on relicing of new guitars. While some do it for the poser effect, the one Justin is showing goes far beyond that, and there's good reason for a pro like him to have one. For starters, the truth is these guys are so busy, they don't have time to break in a new guitar very deeply that they only play in one song. New guitars often don't have character, and distressing them can be helpful. A true relic process does a lot more than change the paint, though that is the first thing you notice. Scuffing/nicking/dirtying the paint makes the guitar feel very different in your hands than a shiny new guitar. It contributes to how you feel about playing it, which changes how you handle it. Distressing it in places like the headstock gives it a totally different feel under your fingers as you play it. You now run into different textures as you play rather than shiny new-guitar smoothness. Plus, good distressors make non-obvious changes that affect the sound of the guitar as well. Let's not forget the elephant in the room: this is a show. A giant arena sized-show. It's supposed to be over-the-top. There is an element of "looks" involved. It's part of his job is to fit in with the look of a show. His amps and gear are mostly hidden. That leaves his axe to show off. Calm down on the "relic" hate. There's a time and a place for it, and in this setting, given his day job, it's entirely appropriate. When ya'll are playing world-class top end tours, then you get to gripe. Until then, keep practicing and playing those bar gigs, and relax.

Brianna S I AGREE...People are way to touchy on this subject...I always say "If you care what your guitars look like, hang it on a wall." Its a tool, a musical shovel so to speak...Who cares what it looks like? The answer: Other musicians.
