I agree that Phil , Brian D , Brian R and Scott was THE classic Thin Lizzy line-up .Many people ,however , overlook the time when Lizzy were a trio and Eric Bell was their sole guitarist. Belfast man Bell was definitely Lizzy's most experimental player and he also stands out because he mainly played a Strat rather than a Les Paul.
' Chinatown' was the first Thin Lizzy album that I bought on it's release ( I was 15 years of age) . I had previously heard 'Jailbreak' which got me hooked. I enjoy all of the eras and line-ups. I am currently listening to Snowy's debut album and really appreciating his playing and songs such as 'Bird of Paradise' and 'Lucky Star'. One song that I also repeatedly enjoy listening to from his days with Thin Lizzy is 'Memory Pain' that was a b-side to 'Trouble Boys' .
CUDOS TO VIV AND ALL THE OTHERS WHO HAVE PLATOONED IN AND OUT OF THIS GREAT BAND!!! IT'S WONDERFUL TO SEE THIN LIZZY KEEP GOING ON WITH THE HELP OF SOME WHO HAVE ACHIEVED EVEN GREATER MONETARY SUCCESS. VIV IS PAYING THE BAND A GREAT DEAL OF RESPECT AND HONORING THEIR MUSICAL LEGACY! THIN LIZZY IS AMONG THE TRULY GREAT BANDS, AND THEIR INFLUENCE IS ENORMOUS!
Saw Thin Lizzy and Guns 'n Roses in Liverpool the other day and honestly Thin Lizzy are brilliant and put on a great show whereas Guns n' Roses took two hours to come on and Axl stopped halfway through a song and threatened to leave because water was being thrown around the crowd.
Interesting that Scott is trying out one of the original Powerball amps in this and not one of the Powerball 2 models. This tour was done well after ENGL released the PB 2
Gorham travels light in the guitar dept. Figured he'd have a fridge full of LPs. Yamaha P90s have great sustain. Dave Meniketti (Y&T) plays one and it rips!
It's great to see a Crate Powerblock in there. We have 3 of them, they are truely fantastic little amps. Martin uses the power amp section on guitar and I use them on bass with a 4 x 10 and 1 x 15 as my main rig! I wish they still made them!
@Djarra Part and parcel of the angle of a Gibson headstock. Have heard of some pros that swear a Les Paul or SG sounds better AFTER a headstock break/repair... Scott's sound is fine.....Vivian Campbell has shocked the hell out of me. The man remembers how to play, and play WELL....here's to hoping he can get back in the TL camp after the Lep summer tour.
@EpiclyConnor Gary Moore was indeed a living legend but he was only in Thin Lizzy for a few brief spells surely one would say without Phil and Brian Robertson it's not Thin Lizzy as the twin harmony sound was created by Brian and Scott. Nevertheless Gorham has now played alongside 7 or 8 other guitar players in Thin Lizzy therefore Scott is the classic guitar sound of Thin Lizzy.
Yes, it's interesting peoples thoughts on what constitutes a band and whether a band should carry on without original members. I personally are of the same view that bands should only be the original members but sometimes the changed line up and can add to the band such as Garry Moore and Joe Walsh (Eagles). None of the Beatles carried on calling themselves the Beatles. There are many bands out there that have no original members but tour as if they are that band. They should be a tribute then.
@ThieleM I could well believe it. Never knew he hit Danzig though lol. I am of the opinion that if it wasn't for Ronnie James Dio, Vivian Campbell wouldn't be where he is today. RJD helped him get his foot in the door. Also, didn't Vivian Campbell once say that he hated playing heavy metal or something to that effect?
These axcess guitars come standard with a Floyd Rose. The idea was to give something different to the player. If you dont like it,there are plenty of others to choose from.
THIN LIZZY IS BIGGER THAN ANY ONE MEMBER, THOUGH PHIL WAS THE HEART OF LIZZY, SCOTT AND BRIAN DOWNEY WERE THE SOUL OF THE BAND FOR NEARLY THE WHOLE HISTORY. IF YOU LOVE PHIL, HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HIS FRIENDS AND BANDMATES WHO ARE KEEPING HIS MUSIC AND HIS MEMORY ALIVE!! SCOTT GORHAM IS MY HERO, AND ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK GUITARISTS EVER!! BLESS YOU SCOTT AND COMPANY!!!!
@bingefeller I have a long story about his asshollery that relates to a time when I had the displeasure of working with him on a promotion. Lets just say that he demonstrated every character that I find dishonorable in the human species. He does get credit for being the first rock guy to deck Danzig.
False Teeth Same here. No Philo, No Lizzy. END of story. Philo WAS Thin Lizzy. That voice of his was amazing and unique. Thank GOD I saw them back to back shows in Boston opening for Queen. '77 or '78.
Totally agree. Only the guitarists who played with Phil (R.I.P ) are classed as Thin Lizzy Guitarist. Eric Bell, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, John Sykes and of course Mr Scott Gorham.
Les' with Floyd Roses do still look odd to me (although Alex Lifeson's Signature with a Piezo-equipped Floyd is getting the job done for him! ;-) but Steve Clark's collection of Kahler-equipped Les Paul Customs both look as well as sound (due to *far* less routing needing to be done to install a Kahler) better to my eyes & ears.
@EpiclyConnor Would have been great if Brian Robertson could have been part of that rather than Campbell. But yeah, without Phil I don't see how they can call it Thin Lizzy.
@DrEviscerator666 Vivian Campbell, the man who went on a tirade calling Ronnie the worst human of all time and then made a half assed statement of regret when Ronnie passed away.
To be fair Vivian busted his ass writing music for Last in Line and got all his song writing cut out by Ronnie. Then he started Hear N Aid and Ronnie took all the credit. Just because someone is a legend doesn't make them a good person.
Vinny Appice and Jimmy Bain both confirmed Viv’s story. Viv was paid minimum wage. The pay that Ronnie kept promising to him after each tour and album never came.
@bowslap Don't get me started. The head angle they use now is too sharp. It was originally to compensate for the neck angle being too shallow when this was corrected in the late 50's the head angle was shallower (the same as on a PRS or Heritage) then in the 70's they introduced a volute which was a really good strong transition (and came from some bloke called Les Paul) but the went all vintage in the late 80's and re introduced the flawed design from 1955.
@bingefeller VIv was in one of the worst bands ever (sweet savage) before Dio. They redefined crap. Yes he said that he didnt want to play rock just before David Coverdale came knocking.
He’s a better guitarist now than he was at 22. He evolved. He’s tastier and bluesier. Have to remember that he’s playing Steve Clark. He’s limited within the parameters of Def Leppard in what he’s allowed to do. Guitarists don’t lose skill just from switching from metal stuff to lighter stuff. He plays all those old Dio solos much more fluidly now with Last In Line.
That's a shame, because although Gary is certainly the bigger name the others are great players, perhaps not as flash as Gary (although John Sykes probably is), but still great. And Gary isn't on many Lizzy songs, and probably the best material was done with Scott and the others. I listen more to Gary's solo material (particularly the rock stuff) than his Lizzy output. Scott, Brian, Eric, Snowy and John have a great deal to offer to listeners.
