Tinsley Ellis broke onto the national blues scene with his early ’80s band, the Heartfixers. By late in the decade, when the Atlanta-based guitarist and singer began releasing albums under his own name, he also became a fixture in the genre’s international club and festival circuit. Over the years he's earned a reputation for full-throttle live shows and well-crafted albums that hinge on his powerful singing and on his playing, which is based in tradition but packed with signature moves like deft finger slides, the use of open, ringing strings in single-note solos, and bends borrowed from B.B. King but laden with his own emotionalism and rock 'n' roll energy.
Ellis has been a seemingly tireless road warrior-at least until Covid. But even the pandemic couldn't slow his songwriting, and he penned more than 200 new titles while in lockdown. You can hear 10 of those tunes, including 6-string bonfires like “Slow Train To Hell,” on his new album Devil May Care-the 20th in his catalog. Back on the road this year, Ellis stopped at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley on March 3, where he showed Premier Guitar his rig and told stories of close encounters with B.B. King and other greats after soundcheck and, that night, delivered a sermon on the power and glory of blues. His current run continues until the end of May, and Ellis has just been nominated in the 2022 Blues Music Awards for Blue-Rock Entertainer of the Year.

Lived in Atlanta for 40 years and have not seen Tinsley play and I have no idea why! Something I need to fix. I saw Robert Cray play in Piedmont Park at the FREE Jazz fest back in the 90’s. There was this guy in the audience 15 ft in front of me. Everyone kept coming up to him and shaking his hand and chatting with him. I finally realized it was Tinsley!

Had the pleasure of seeing Tinsley live at the Variety Playhouse... twice! Those shows were about 15+ years apart and he was great both times! He broke a string in the middle of a song, changed it, tuned it, and jumped back in the jam in less than 60 seconds! So cool 😎

I'm sure it was quick but less than 60 seconds to pull the broken string, insert the new one, wind it and then tune it, isn't realistic
@John3_16andthensome
@John3_16andthensome 2 года назад
@@skobywankenobi Quite realistic actually. He was very well prepared for it. Had a spare high-E string out of the package along with a string winder, both sitting on top of his amp at the ready right behind him. He was playing an ES 335 at the time, so the ball end of the broken string came out effortlessly; the other end took a couple of seconds longer. New string slipped right in thru the tailpiece; took him a little more effort at the tuning peg, but once he had it all the way thru, the string winder took no time at all and he was looking down at his floor tuner as he was taking the slack out. He probably ran the pitch up past E natural to allow for the string stretch and may have already had the string boiled or pre-stretched in some other way as well. The main thing I realized after seeing a pro do something like that up close, is that he clearly had PRACTICED doing on-the-fly string changes. It wasn't just luck....he had it down! Got massive applause for it too. And yes, I actually started counting as soon as I realized what was happening. LITERALLY less than 60 seconds. I was there.

1992 I lived in Memphis Couldn't afford the cover charge, but I did get to hear Tinsley Ellis through the glass outside the B.B.King Blues Club until the door man told me to move along 😊 Be on the lookout for young guitarslinger Matthew Taylor

This video just made me realize this is the first Tinsley tour I've missed in many years. His are sometimes the only one I'll see the whole year. Had the pleasure of catching him before a show once and before the crowd recognized him, really pleasant guy to talk with.

I’ve been blessed to see Tinsley play in the Atlanta area, as well as seeing B.B., in the late ’60s, in a college gym. Both are unforgettable bluesmen.

Went to see Coco Montoya with Tinsley opening at the MIM (Phoenix) in 2019 and was blown away by Tinsley's set, not so much Coco's. Honest music, haven't missed a show of his since.

Gibson needs to re-issue the Moderne in cool retro mid-century colors. It looks like a old car tail fin, they should go with it.

Nice to see, the pro's pedalboard with only 4 pedals and daisy chain power, forget about truebypass/buffer problems, isolated power supply and high grade audio cables

Why is it nice to see? Pro or amateur, isolated is objectively better, from a purely electrician standpot

How so?
@LikeigiveAFaboutU
@LikeigiveAFaboutU 2 года назад
@@michaelhotz7118 cuz there are thousands of old white guys playing the same exact blues lick+ Near the exact vibrato every second of every day. That's the joke. There are so many around that these rundowns are kinda redundant when it comes to players like these. Not anything bad against them. I want to see these tundowns to see what exact stuff they use. That's why I am subscribed to this show. For any band. But with these types of musicians in particular. You can pretty much guess with spot on accuracy most of the time, what they will play for that nights gig. Just talking to a guy for 10 minutes about things other than sound. You could talk to a person just about the genre they play and you can guess what setup they have. Depending on the $ flow of the musician, Ur guess can sometimes be pretty damn right.
