Ever been confused about what the steps are to rig a sailboat? Boat Builder Bob Emser takes us through the steps he takes to prepare and rig his sailboat, Skylark. From the preparation of the shrouds and forestay to the marlin lacing of the sails watch as Emser rigs his newly build Haven 12¹⁄₂.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”

The building process has finally come to an end and now it is time to let the skylark fly. I am glad and honoured I have been part of the journey!

Awesome work Bob! Skylark sure is a beauty! It has to be hard not to take Skylark down to the local lake and go sailing! I look forward to watching the launch video. Thanks for sharing!

I really can’t wait to see her in the water. 20:18 the „loose“ end looking out on the eye of the forestay. Please put some electrical tabe or some tube over it. This will be a catch/chafing point that might damage your sail.

Absolutely ingenious as to all phases of the building process. You have created a beautiful boat and a beautiful documentary. I watched and listened to every second of the process. Thank you for creating this. BTW, I am jealous of your studio and can only imagine what beautiful works of art are crafted here.

Great video Bob, enjoyed the detailed explanation of the hows and whys of the rigging. As I found out many years ago rigging my 18 ft sailboat the wind will kick up about the time you get it almost finished even on a calm day.

Really nice work! Just one comment. If you tie of your marlin hitches at the ends of the booms and not start with a knot in the sail you avoid pulling in the leach when you tension the hitches.

Hi Bob, I'm Nevel Marcano, from Margarita Island, Venezuela, I've been following your videos on the art of boat building for some time now. I love it! to such an extent that soon to retire at 60 years of age, I have been enthusiastic about a personal project, now in design, following the pattern of the Haven and the Cuillin. The question is that, initially in one of his videos he showed on the blackboard how the planks were distributed, for this he gave an explanation with a compass on the curvature of the frames and took as a reference a certain distance from the beam. I have not found this explanation in his videos! Will it be possible to see it again? Thank you. I have a plan with this project, is to teach young people how good it can be to build these boats and more to be able to sail them. I come from a family of fishermen and I have been teaching physics for 30 years. Greetings and thank you very much.

I am very much looking forward to seeing Skylark sail. I'm not sure if you are familiar with Lowell's Boat Shop & Museum in Amesbury, MA. They have several teaching programs including an Apprenticeship Program. It turns out that their current students in the program are finishing up a Haven 12 1/2 as well which should be ready in the spring. Thought you might be interested.

I should have said this two weeks ago but I thought no you will see it. Anyway just if you don’t, you need a leather cover to go over your mast band so you don’t scratch your mast.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding День назад
HI Captain, I did install a leather band at the point of the mast partner. Unfortunately, it increased the mast circumference so that the mast partner would not close. Thanks for watching! Bob

Very nice work, as always. I would be interested in seeing what you’ll have to do to unstep/destep the mast for storage and transport and how much rerigging you’ll have to do to use the boat each time. Good luck at the launch.

It's interesting you used a track. Is that common with gaffs? I always assumed there was some concern about damage to the track or jaws from this arrangement.

I would have expected a forestay halyard instead of a tensioner. That's how we always used to raise and lower our masts. Takes a lot less effort and enables raising a much heavier mast safely. If you hold the end of the line with your pinky finger, it saves you from having to find it again.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 15 дней назад
I'm just here following Joel White and Nat Herreshoff's plans. The mast with the rigging weighs 25 Lbs. Stepping the mast is quit easy, even by myself. Thanks for watching! Hope to see you in Mystic.
@ThaJay
@ThaJay 15 дней назад
@@TheArtofBoatBuilding In our case, the boats were fitted to be able to quickly drop the mast while sailing to go under a bridge. Our masts were also a lot heavier, we needed 2 people to lift it off the ground. Have fun on your first sail, I can imagine its sailing characteristics will be amazing, judging by the hull shape.
