Excellent video, Thanks. Getting back on the water after 40 years!

AMAZING, precise tuition without words. I learnt more about rigging my Wayfarer World than ever before: from raising the mast; shroud tension; jib; tell tales; kicking strap; cunningham; sail tuning for better sailing. A great refresher after not sailing for a long time. EXCELLENT video. Thank you so much. It helped me a lot with your simple tuition. Brilliant :-D

Darren, thanks for your kind comments. It was a fun lockdown project. I tried to keep it to 10 to 12 minutes (but failed) as I’ve been put off looking at other contributions by their length!

Thank you very much for the video. I just got an old wooden Enterprise which needs a bit of love. Really enjoyed your tips and advice. They will come in handy when I get on the water for the first time. Greetings from Cape Town.

Glad to be of help. Good luck with your Enterprise project! It was fun making the video - even used some Lego to make an iPhone holder for the camera stand!

What a fantastic video... So useful, especially as my default position is with the dinghy on it's side! :D It's great to see the effects of such minor adjustments explained and visible. Thanks.

I bought a little GP14 last year without any guidance on how to rig it. After a couple of failed dry-runs I think this video will help me fill in the gaps! Thank you so much for a very informative video.

darth_rich Glad it is useful. For a GP you will need to run the Genoa sheets outside the shrouds. Location of the mast step down low and adding chocks around the gate where the mast passes through the deck allows better control of mast bend. But this is fine tuning! All other principles are the same!

My Enterprise goes on the water today for the first time in 29 years and after a very slow restoration (the boat dates from late 50's). When I came to rig it up, a lot had gone missing over the years and this video has been incredibly useful to me. And also in refreshing my memory as i haven't sailed it, or any other boat, for 29 years when I was 18. Many thanks.

How is the sailing going? Cool story. I am about to refit an Enterprise that I stored in a field 20 years ago. She has been covered up and the sails have been stored inside. She is fiberglass and has survived the "hibernation" quite well.

@@jim1934 we sailed her quite a bit last year, both on a loch up here in the Highlands and also the sea. I need to practice more! I haven't sailed thus year yet because I've been without my tow car, but hopefully back in the water soon.

Same here, just been given a 1970s Enterprise, been a big gap from sailing every week with school to now. I have joined the local sailing club and signed up for a RYA course with my children. Looking forward to getting out on the water again.

Greg thanks for the video. Really useful and nice presentation. Having trouble with the rudder cam on my shared Ent. Do have or know of RU-vids of how to lock down and lock up a rudder like yours? Thanks Jonny
@gregcroydon
@gregcroydon 3 года назад
Jonny. Glad you liked it and thank you for your comments. I am not aware of any RU-vids on the rudder system. They can be a bit temperamental at times, particularly if they have taken a knock on grounding. Best to dismantle the rudder. Take out the blade and remove the cam. Clean it all up and check that the cam is solid on its shaft etc. If the cutaway in the rudder blade is damaged, you might need to build it back up a little with some epoxy. Good luck! Greg

Great video, Will an enterprise tack with main only? I am just about to join a club and have an enterprise in mind for my own starter boat, but will probably be single handling it for a while. Will it work or do I need to have the jib at all times and bring a mate to sail it? I know it's possible to adjust main and jib single handed, but maybe not at my level just yet. Thank you
@gregcroydon
@gregcroydon 2 года назад
Yes, an Ent will tack more easily with just a main - as the centre of effort of the sail is behind where the boat rotates (the centreboard). However, the jib is very useful to balance the boat, particularly when sailing upwind, as without it the boat will always be trying to spin into the wind. You will have a lot of “weather helm” meaning you will be pulling on the tiller all the time. If it is windy and you aren’t sailing it totally upright, the boat will be very difficult to control without a jib. If you are in this position, pull the centreboard up half to move the centre of rotation aft. I would recommend using a jib just as soon as you can! Tip for singlehanded use is to use a continuous jib sheet, or at least tie the sheet ends together. This will mean you can always reach the sheet from the windward side.

@@gregcroydon Thank you, are the Ent. easy enough to recover after capsize? Do they lie on side or tend to turtle?
@gregcroydon
@gregcroydon 2 года назад
@@johnhaughey5347 Ents aren’t the best of boats in a capsize. They are old fashioned so they come up with a lot of water in. They will turn turtle if you aren’t quick to get on the centreboard. You may well get lots of practice in your first year!

@@gregcroydon if I sail for a little while without the jib (until I get confidence) do I need tension on the forestay?

Karl. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree that I could have introduced the controls in more detail. I could also have gone into detail about setting up mast pre bend with the spreader adjustments! But I was trying to pitch it at people who might have just done a Start Racing course and keep it under 15 minutes - always a difficult balance!! Greg
