Had a grand old time rigging down this cottonwood tree. Special thanks to my ground crew, Dave and Felicia, who did an excellent job running ropes and keeping the ground clean. Could not have dismantled this tree without them.

I must confess that I use an air cannon to shoot the throw ball into a tree. I'm a terrible thrower. Initial line placement is super important to me so it's worth it to me.

Should definitely think about adding an Alpine Butterfly just above your basal anchor. Makes it super easy to attach another rope to lower a climber in case of an emergency. Great video!

You seem very comfortable in the spurs, fluid. How long did it take to get used to them, do you think about them and foot placement, or is it second nature now? I’m getting to the point of trusting the tie in point and equipment, I’m having a hard time with the spurs….. Thanks for the videos, they are great for perspective on how things go in the tree.
@zaccheus
@zaccheus 2 года назад
It took me a long time to trust my gear. Spurs do end up feeling like and extension of your foot after awhile and I pretty much don't even have to give them any thought now. It's even become natural to spike the tree rather than the rope 😅

If your cutting veers off to one side, try flipping your bar and see if your cut veers off the other way. If it does you bar is likely bent and need straightening

Do you ever put a tag line to the other ground man on those bigger pieces so they don't swing around so much?
@zaccheus
@zaccheus 3 года назад
I will if the swing threatens a structure, but if I don't have to, I don't put the time into it. The swing isn't all bad and can serve as energy absorption sometimes.

Did you tie a stopper knot at the end of your climbing rope? I've heard stories about climbers getting to the end of their rope and falling off it.
@zaccheus
@zaccheus 3 года назад
I have heard similar stories. I do not tie a stopped know at the the end of my rope. I make sure to leave enough rope on the ground so that it will reach the ground wherever I am in the tree. I personally think it's always important to have a rope exit from the tree available.
@ThienTran-ly9fi

Hi Zach, wondering what your thoughts are on butt tying some of those pieces
@zaccheus
@zaccheus Год назад
This video was from a while ago and I've done some thing different since then 😅 I like to mid tie wood becaise it seems to produce a smoother loading of the rope in some situations. It can also turn them into a helicopter though if things don't go right and that can pose mild safety concerns for those below. Butt tyise works, it just seems to require a little more skill on the rope runner to make it smooth. I also often feel the need to add a half hitch to some butt tied pieces.

It's a large Petzl Caritool with the gate missing. I broke the gate off on accident and decided I liked it better that way. I dont think I've ever had the saw get knocked off of it either. www.amazon.com/dp/B00HNEER32/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_2TM1R12CRNCN7HW67Y6Y

What ascender do you use! I want to order one! The good old Blake’s friction hitch is getting hard and I want to get into srt
@zaccheus
@zaccheus 3 года назад
I only use one foot ascender for SRT climbing. I use a Notch Jet Step when climbing spikeless and I have a Climbing Technologies foot ascender mounted on my gaffs for when I doing removals. Both ascended are good in my mind. Maybe the Climbing Technologies one is a little better 🤷‍♂️ The Jet Step gets a lot if hate because the rope comes out of it easy, but I personally like that it's not hard to get the rope in and out of.

@zaccheus
@zaccheus 2 года назад
It's the only SRT device I've ever used so I don't have any comparative thoughts. I've had good success with it. It does taking some playing with to get adjusted. I really like it's compactness and ease of midline attachability. I'll be buying another when it's time to replace this one. Unless a new unicender comes out

That's what I've heard too. Until then, I'll be an akimbo man. I'd be happy to try an original rope runner if it were available to me. I'm not a fan of anything with the Notch name on it. The RRP seems to be having some issues anyway.

2 pro tips for you, (been in biz 20 years mean no offence) 1.) to stop violent swinging logs like you had there when rigging, use a tag line opposite to the swing (guy standing around with hands on head could have held that) which eliminates alot of sketchy moments 2.) bar cutting on a curve; take the chain off, and flat file both sides off the bar, when u remove the chain u will feel a thick metal edge, this happens because you dont keep the chain tight all the time, to avoid it, tension chain often. ** last thing, few times you call them cottonwood (your not wrong in every video but for example the one 2 days ago for sure poplar no questions asked) so try hard to not mix them up makes u look more professional** cottonwood bark is the same from the base to the very tip twig, if ever it looks like a poplar anywhere in the tree, its a poplar..... i only know this from 20 years experience and we have a TON of poplar and cottonwood so differentiating the two is key where im from. aside from those minor things, your work is top notch for your age ! just found your channel, very enjoyable to watch, and nice to see young guys doing it right! again no offence was ever meant by this, just a chance to learn :)
@zaccheus
@zaccheus 2 года назад
Thanks for your thoughts! 1) I tend to swing more wood than people ar comfortable with, and yes a tag line would certainly reduce the swing, but if the swing doesn't directly threaten any structures, then the time setting a tag line is a waste. 2) i prefer to run saws with the chain a little loose, certainly not so loose as to risk the chain jumping, but loose enough that the chain tension does not cause unecessary drag. (I have been guilty of letting them get too loose, but who hasn't?) Also you may be interested to know that stihl makes a file jig specifically for deburring bars. Its really handy. 3) cottonwood and tulip poplar are similar in many ways, but I'm sure you're well aware of how different the leaves are. This one didn't have any leaves on it at the time of the video, but the ground was covered in the previous year's foliage. Again, thank you for your thoughts, I always appreciate hearing others' ideas and critiques 😊
