NOTES: Last year, when the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera arrived, I made a video to break it in - www.vimeo.com/hpmoon/nyc - and laid down a commentary to share some insights - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nP7BSmmW63w.html. Not the newest thing now, it's still the only option for capturing 10-bit 4:2:2 log video without a big rig, and costing under a grand. But it's always needed a bit of rigging, and while filmmakers keep using it to make amazing films - examples at www.focuspulling.com/blog/blackmagic - there's still a lot to talk about, in terms of rigging it up right. Following up the commentary I made last year that went sort of viral, here's a similar chat: because sometimes showing stuff and talking over it works better than writing an article. For a streaming clip, it runs long, but it covers lots of ground - and I'm looking forward to your comments below.
Thanks for watching, and as this feed grows into a real resource, please hit the red Subscribe button above, then the gear icon you'll see there, to get notified about new video uploads from FocusPulling.com.

Thank YOU for the info on the Metabones alt. I bought the BMPCC for the 495 and just purchased the Roxsen booster after watching your video.

mirasocal Let me know how that Roxsen works out for you. The optical quality is somewhere between the overpriced Metabones, and the disastrous Fotodiox.

Nicely done. This video speaks to us newbs without "dumbing down" anything. I've been trying to get my head around the endless arguments about which lenses to use with the BMPCC and this video cleared up a lot of the confusion for me. Thanks for the quality content.

Old vintage lenses works just fine so you can get good deals on cheap working lenses for the BMPCC. They do make it important to balance the camera though and use of some kind of lens support since they can be a little heavy. It is pretty easy to make a homemade "rig" out of for example a cheap Ikea plastic cutting board and cheap 15mm rods so you can push the cam backwords from the center point of the tripod to balance it. There should be enough material left from the cutting board to make a lens support too. All you need is a heatgun, a saw, a few drillbits, the rods and time. Depending on the quality of your tripod you might even get smooth panning and tilting since the cam is balanced.

Thanks for this awesome video! In 2021 I just ordered a BMPCC OG on Ebay, totaling $709.00 USD after tax and shipping. After those many "Is BMPCC still relevant" videos on RU-vid, it's now kinda rare to find one for under $700.00 USD, I am seeing. 😅 Best Wishes

Your insight into getting EF mount lenses instead of MFT lenses was invaluable. It also works for me since I shoot Canon and can use those same lens to turn my dslr into a B or C camera.

Thanks, and the dream goes on that someday there will be a common metadata interface: not only in PL mount as recently reported here -- www.studiodaily.com/2017/05/cooke-says-vendors-including-canon-sony-panavision-red-standardize-lens-metadata/ -- but across each physical interface, despite manufacturers guarding their proprietary standards. (Like restaurants, they make all their money off huge lens mark-ups, after hooking folks on loss-leader camera bodies as if alcohol vs. entrees.) For now, lowest common denominator flange distance is it!
@opwave79

I plan to rent my lenses. Zeiss Primes. Why buy them? Also I'm pretty sure the BMPCC MFT to EF speedbooster is active and not passive. And if you're going to rig it out there is a rig that has a mattebox, rail, cage, and power supply.
@mt110121
@mt110121 10 лет назад
Thanks for a great video! I just wanted to point out that while the speedbooster that you mentioned is about $500 cheaper than the metabones version, they are not the same. The crop factor on the metabones version that they made specifically for the BMPCC has a much lower crop factor than anything I have seen in the market.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
Great point, Mohammad. If I could go back and correct the video, I would, but RU-vid doesn't allow substitution of video content at the same URL like Vimeo does. I do think, though, that the competing focal reducer goes most of the distance towards minimizing the crop factor compared to Metabones, to justify giving it a look.

Super report and Presentation! You are a Killer Producer! Like so many users of BMPCC I have a specialized (Travelogs) mission so can't generalize my experiance, but----I did a lot of filters early on to get a grip on the footage, but came to the conclusion that max light gave me better range and linear detail ( I'm a DOF guy); I'm doing my filtration in Resolve.Cables: I built a left end grip of Alum (I like to pan like handlebars) that's a protective shell for the cables. Viewfinder: The Zacuto LOOKS great; I believe that eyepieces are a shooter looking for a target; monitors are a window seeking a composition, a space. Batteries: I think the Swedish Chameleon chap (Utube) has some wise council.

that's badass becausev that means you can have different lenses and you don't have to buy different ND filters for every different one cuz like you might have like a 75 to 300 and the threads on the end might be different and so you got to buy it in a filter for that and then you have to buy all these adapters with that piece you got you don't have to

+FocusPulling (.com) What else I like is how you bought the gear that fits to your needs and situations. You didn't buy into what's standard. Which tells me not everything top of the line is always going to workout or really excessive. It really boils down to is how you use the gear to the best of your ability and working beyond the limitations.
@DavidBerglund

That HolyManta ND adapter looks useful, but the perfect product for this camera would be a combined focal reducer and ND adapter. It would complete this camera so nicely. Fotodiox just released a competing ND adapter btw, the ND Throttle. It's 1/3 the price of the HolyManta but it doesn't provide the ability to completely flick away the filter. I'm not sure how it is optically either.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
Hi David. I couldn't guarantee that the optical quality of the HolyManta is better than the Fotodiox, but on principle, after the Vizelex "Light Canon turned softener" scandal followed by their equally jaw-dropping Excell+1 debacle, it seems wise to avoid them. Yet, behind the lens is a better position for the ND filter to be, and any gains Fotodiox realized from their newest stab probably relates more to that than the quality of their ND glass. As you note, getting both functions into one would be ideal, and even though there's barely any room, it's not inconceivable: after all, the crude DIY approach we've been taking for a long time is just to mount a thin gel over the rear opening of a lens (albeit not a variable solution)! Interesting parallel: Sony hemmed and hawed about how the NEX-FS100 couldn't possibly have incorporated ND filters, and then the NEX-FS700 came along, with the same form factor, adding three levels of ND using little slivers of glass that you can flip into place. So it's conceivable that a clever manufacturer (better than Fotodiox) might come along with a product that combines a focal reducer with a three-level ND flip-in filter. I'd jump!
@DavidBerglund
@DavidBerglund 10 лет назад
FocusPulling (.com) Interesting! I never knew about that gel trick and that people actually did that. Here's hoping that someone is busy building an ND filter+Focal reducer as we speak.

Hey Focus Pulling, thanks for the great video! I just bought a BMPCC and need a good, inexpensive all around lens. Would you recommend Rokinon with the Metabones speed booster or Panasonic with the Speed booster? and which lens exactly please. Also, can I attach Rokinon or Panasonic lenses without an adaptor? Thanks
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
When starting out, it's critical for your first lens to be all-purpose. It's a tough chunk of change to cough up, I know, but that Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 lens that I advocate first in my video really is your best choice -- after all, Metabones adapters are dramatically overpriced for what they do, and would cut into your lens budget from the start. To keep cost of the zoom lens to a minimum, the cheapest place to buy it (and where I got mine, with satisfaction) is tax-free from overseas at DigitalRev via free FedEx delivery: focuspull.in/hs12035. In getting an active lens, you have Power O.I.S. for those inevitable times when you go hand-held, something you don't get from manual lenses. It's a critical starting point. Hope that helps!

It's been a number of years since you posted this but I have a question! Around 2:40 you talk about NOT buying micro 4/3 lenses for the BMPCC....are you saying they literally will not work because they won't fit properly? I've been doing a ton of research on the different lenses to buy for this camera as I plan on buying one shortly and this is the first time I've heard this mentioned. I had my eye on the Rokinon 12mm T2.2 cine lens MFT mount but are you saying I would be wasting my money? Cheers and thanks for the very informative video
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 7 лет назад
Thanks for asking, glad to clarify. Definitely not saying that lenses advertised with Micro 4/3 mounts won't fit properly -- rather, in the specific example of MOST cinema lenses like the Rokinons, the crazy thing is, they are 100% identical as between the Canon and Micro 4/3 and E-mount and Nikon versions. The only difference is the flange spacer between the lens and the mount: you can think of it as a wired-shut adapter for your camera that can't be removed. That's why I advocate -- for such a lens that's fully manual -- to just go with the full-frame or APS-C Canon version and (for the time being) use a cheap, $10 "dumb" adapter that goes to your Micro 4/3 mount. (The focal reducer link, still working from the description above, is an even better idea but only applies to full-frame lenses, while the one rare exception to all of the above is that the 12mm T2.2 lens you're looking at actually is different, with no Canon EF-mount version -- it's a true crop lens custom designed for Micro 4/3 and similar small sensors.) Hope that helps.

Hi! Thanks for the video. How accessible is record button with View Factor Contineo BMPCC cage? Is it comfortable to use handheld with a wooden grip or this cage is mostly for the tripod-based rigging?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
I find it's very comfortable to access the record button through the cut-out at the top of the View Factor Contineo cage -- maybe even preferably inset for preventing accidental trigger. I also find that the wooden grip is really helpful for filling the hand's grip on that side of the cage, leaving the other hand for focusing. As the video explains, I even found the cage useful for leveraging those slots (after a bit of filing down the harsh edges) to slip a camera strap into, which wasn't possible with the camera body alone.

Using Canon EF lenses and the Holymanta instead of the MFT lenses for the Blackmagic Pocket, how much does your crop factor change? Using MFT specific lenses with the BMPCC is about 1:1.4 crop.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 9 лет назад
There's no change in the crop factor because that is itself a measure of the relationship between universal lens focal length relative to a 35mm full frame, and then sensor size (unless you have a focal reducer in-between, which the Holymanta is not).

A really fantastic video! I was wondering, how much does a usb mobile charger extend the Tascam's battery life by? Thanks for a great video!
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
Thanks, Jordan. That really depends on the capacity of the battery being connected, which varies widely. I should have clarified in the video, you can actually run off the USB bus completely, without batteries, though naturally a dual-power approach adds some security. Rough guess, I think with a 10000 mAH USB battery charger, you'll get at least a couple more hours.
@jordanmarsden7437
@jordanmarsden7437 10 лет назад
Thank you so much for the reply! Would the be a couple more hours added on to the batteries? Or would that be a couple more hours with the Charger alone? For example, if the batteries alone are 3 hours. Does that mean the charger could be 5 hours? Sorry for all the questions haha. Thanks again!
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
Jordan Marsden Even though these are all rough estimates, what you say sounds about right, though the baseline is that batteries drain more quickly on this than, say, the Zoom H4n (as a benchmark). The best thing to do, as always, is to run a continuous test using your own connected gear before an important first shoot, logging the total life, so that you know what to expect in the field!

The adapter reduces the quality of the Rokinon lenses? the metabones speedboster is better?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
There are limited circumstances where the Metabones out-performs the Roxsen, especially when your aperture is fully wide open, but the gains in sharpness from focal reduction are offset by the overall problem of putting an independent set of glass between your lens and the sensor - never as good as a straight shot. So as always, it's a compromise to be managed on a case-by-case basis. Where I've always ended up is, if you have to shoot at the widest possible aperture, there may be something wrong with your shooting environment, and stopping down just a little heals many wounds. Reasonably good lighting and observational/set prep aren't outdated by forgiving tech.
@Nickk218
@Nickk218 9 лет назад
Wait when did this camera release?
@MayhemJack
@MayhemJack 8 лет назад
I've seen other people use the Metabones adapter even for mounting MFT lenses, is there a reason for this - will mounting an already MFT lens to a Metabones adapter (e.g. Canon EF/Nikon) work? Or is there an MFT-MFT adapter by Metabones as well that reduces the crop factor? Please excuse me if these are stupid questions. But I'm getting a BMPCC and thinking of getting a Rokinon 85mm as my prime lens and don't know if I should spend more for the Metabones thing - is it absolutely necessary? Frankly, I don't fully understand how this crop factor works - so what would you suggest as the ideal prime lens? 24mm, 85mm or what? (If you could suggest some lenses for wide angle as well that would be helpful) Thanks!
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 8 лет назад
+MalloryJacobPacheco It's actually impossible to mount MFT lenses onto any existing Metabones adapter and also impossible to appreciate the benefits of a focal reducer going from MFT to MFT; you're seeing instead a Metabones that takes Canon or Nikon lenses and adapts them to a body with MFT lens mount. What's recommended here is making sure you always buy Canon full-frame lenses (like the Rokinon Cine prime you mentioned) and then using a focal reducer to get the most out of it. Metabones has the best optical quality, but arguably unnoticeable and definitely far overpriced. In the links at the caption, you'll find a Roxsen focal reducer that works perfectly well. Hope that helps.
@MayhemJack
@MayhemJack 8 лет назад
FocusPulling (.com) Thank you very much for responding quickly - that was very informative! One last question, though. Would you say that getting the focal reducer is absolutely necessary? I know that it really isn't that costly, but I'm on a tight budget and already have a lot of expenses so I'd like to spend less as much as possible (film school is really expensive lol) - but in case I do get a focal reducer, does the lens really have to be a Canon EF lens? Because that's why I was thinking of skipping getting a Metabones for now and just get those cheap Rokinon MFTs - to save more money. What would you say is my best option, though?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 8 лет назад
+MalloryJacobPacheco It isn't necessary but well worth the investment if you've got full-frame glass, whether it's Canon or Nikon, as explained at 13:48. In other words, if you're hooking on a manual lens anyway, the Metabones electronic controls are unnecessary, and the Roxsen will do.

Hello, in thinking of buying the bmpcc to record workout videos like p90x (primary goal), some short films, online reviews, etc. Right now my budget is not very high. What lens should I start with and also what's the best option for sound bc I will be moving around and giving instructions to the viewer and participants in the video. I'm fairly new to all this, but I really like electronics and a fast learner. Thanks for any tips to maximize the bmpcc.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 9 лет назад
It's not quite what you want to hear at $900, but that Panasonic 12-35mm continuous f/2.8 zoom lens I mention in the video - focuspull.in/1235mm - is sort of like investing in several primes, as it's that good. And having active lens image stabilization is a big plus, too. So it's worth investing for the future (as you could use the lens on new products, including the Panasonic Lumix line such as currently the GH4). With regard to sound, if you are strictly mic'ing solo voice, the internal recording of the Blackmagic Pocket is sufficient and you could wire in a lavalier, or a wireless pack. If you need more of an ambient capture, you might want to go with the shotgun I recommend in the video, as it has the option to use a battery where the camera does not provide phantom power. Hope that helps!
@RespireTV
@RespireTV 9 лет назад
FocusPulling (.com) Could you provide me a link to a wireless pack option for sound. I think I would need both options for what I'm doing. @RespireTV

Meanwhile, I note that the URSA Mini, newer than the BMPC4K, is available in a 4K model that's much more affordable than the marginally better URSA Mini 4.6K (otherwise identical body-wise).

Does this thing still eat thru storage? Or is there a way to tame it down? Does this one take the same metabones as the bmpcc4k?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 5 лет назад
Still eats through storage as you note, given that ProRes is really an inefficient codec that was all along not really designed for camera acquisition (just an intermediate codec for old Final Cut Pro). You could hook up an external recorder, if it records in something other than ProRes. Meantime, there were several compatible Metabones adapters, but one of them was very BMPCC-centric optimized for its 16mm-equivalent sensor size -- that won't work with the 4k (or 6k) variants. But the standard MFT to EF-mount kind definitely will.

The z finder frame is taped on to the camera? That doesn't sound good. Does it leave residue and does the frame ever fall off?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
I haven't tested removal yet to see if it leaves any residue, but the frame is really designed for permanent adhesion. In this example, it wasn't even a problem with the cage; and so far, it hasn't come off after repeated removals of the Z-Finder which snaps very snugly. Zacuto is supposed to include a spare frame (and they didn't in my shipment, but were happy to send it as a follow-up).

Ironically, with the same firmware and interface, the BMPCC is merely a scaled-down version of the BMCC with all the same problems concerning power, user interface, file management and so on. Hence all of these rigging strategies apply almost equally between the two.

Hi, do you know if rokinon cine lens ef is cmpatible with Canon EF to BMPCC Speed Booster?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 10 лет назад
Yes, it would be for sure; though several items in the Rokinon Cine lens line-up are designed for APS-C crop sensors, making the value of the focal reduction diminished. Also, the active circuitry in the Metabones is useless for the all-manual Rokinon lenses, so it's more sensible (if you're starting from scratch) to get the recommended Roxsen with its minor cut in clarity: focuspull.in/focalred

I don't believe so; but numerous others have followed in their footsteps, for example Canon provides the option when adapting their DSLR lenses to mirrorless, to insert an ND filter (albeit less of a swing-in mechanism, and just a slot). Fotodiox also gave it a go with a variety of lens adapters, though their company's reputation is in the cheapo import direction, while lacking the OG's ability to completely swing out the ND filter when not needed (for maximum clarity): fotodioxpro.com/collections/filtered-adapters/nd-throttle

What about Veydra mini primes?
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 7 лет назад
Well, product value is very relative depending on circumstances, but for me, Veydra lenses always seemed a little overpriced, even if they can boast being more affordable than the usual blue-chip brands like Zeiss. That said, another reason to stay away from native MFT-mount lenses is that they aren't adaptable to other mounts; whereas, as highlighted here, Canon EF-mount adapts down to Sony E-mount and MFT ("three for one").

Canon full frame ef lenses have great image quality but are some of the worst lenses for the black magic pocket camera. A standard 50mm canon prime ef lens will still be 50mm on a full frame dslr 5d body. But doing the math with a 2.88x crop factor on the Black Magic pocket a 50 mm lens become a 144mm lens which is for the most part unusable for normal shooting in enclosed spaces. In addition the holy manta nd filter has no electronic contacts so if you are using an ef lens you will have no control over your aperture and will lose the image stabilisation feature of lenses. The best bet for lenses is to buy used super 16 film lenses off of ebay.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 9 лет назад
Superbustr This view may be a bit misguided, because there is no "penalty" for using a full-frame lens in comparison to a lens designed for this Super 16mm sensor. The crop factor applies to both. In fact, full-frame lenses tend to perform better than native counterparts over crop sensors because glass always performs best at the sharper center zone. It's a separate matter that full-frame lenses tend to go fully manual on this camera, but the used Super 16mm lenses that you recommend are of course in the same boat. Ultimately the recommendation here remains, going with full-frame manual EF-mount cinema primes for future-proofing and adapter versatility, while agreeing just on this: active lenses with image stabilization and the option to go automatic are great complements to a good set of full-frame manual primes.

Great! Innovative tilts on unexpected axes, and smooth movements all-around. Some highlights get blown out, but you've probably still got some information up there! Just apply a Fast Color Corrector (or the equivalent outside of Premiere) and bring down your highlights, seeing what details get revealed in clouds, etc. Also, your color temperatures shift, not only because of time of day but probably more; Blackmagic recordings are very forgiving about modifying color temperature after-the-fact, and many of these shots seem to need to get warmer, by going down in Kelvin.
@ShortStopStudios
@ShortStopStudios 9 лет назад
I did do my own grading apart from what the rec.709 or LUT's would have offered. This was my first shoot with the camera, and I wasn't sure it it was better to shoot losing highlights, or losing in blacks, so I kind of winged it. However I think I realized this camera can really bring back highlights better. I suppose I can bring them back some more for Yosemite as you mentioned. I hope to utilize the camera in more situations to start to hone in on the best quality I can get out of this camera. But may also be upgrading to the 4k, I'm not sure...

Not knocking this video (was actually quite informative)...but.... I honestly don't know why people "rig" up their bmpcc? It's meant to be a pocket camera that you can easily move around, maybe even slide into your pocket after taking the lens off. A cage is fine, but when I see a top handle on it, it gives me a case of face-palm. When I see rod rails and follow focus etc on a bmpcc, it makes me want to throw mine out the window.That HolyManta looks cool, but why not just put a simple Variable ND filter on your lens (you said you would use this when using a m43 lens, but there's no reason why you can't use it for any other lens)? The only real things you need for a bmpcc "rig" -Lens with OK zoom range, with variable ND -The SMALLEST external battery source you can find. -Maybe a cage if you ever want to attach a better grip or want more/better mounting points. If you really want to have a rig, get a BMCC/BMPC4K and rig it up. Otherwise what's the point of getting one of their smallest cameras, and making it into a rig bigger than the URSA. I'm reading this comment back, and I sound like an angry grandpa. lol. but I'll refrain from editing it, just because those are the points I want to make.
@focuspulling
@focuspulling 6 лет назад
I hear you, these are increasingly relevant points since the time when I created this video four years ago. One of the themes back then was a huge gap between cameras shooting in proper high-bitrate, film log, and clean codec qualities, versus "pro" cameras totally out of reach. That gap has closed considerably, but four years ago, we were having to make do with all these compromises simply to achieve respectable cinematic qualities. Small point on the HolyManta: it's a product that never fully took off (Fotodiox tried, and failed as usual, making their own version) -- but ND capability in smaller form factors is, I think, something we'll be seeing a lot in the near future (especially with electronic controls). To be specific, as the video explains, a behind-the-lens ND filter doesn't actually work with native MFT lenses, but rather, when adapting to larger lens formats -- namely, Canon and Nikon only -- because of the implicit flange differential between MFT and other formats.
@baddogentertainment6960
@baddogentertainment6960 6 лет назад
I keep forgetting to look at the publish date on these videos. lol. My bad. I guess I have the mentality of today where "less is more", with most people moving down from big shoulders cams, and shoulder rigs to DSLRs, and from DSLRs to Mirrorless or compact cinema cameras. Should see some of the videos from 9 years ago, when Redrock m2 35mm adapters were "in". The camera rig would end up being 3 foot+ long, and the footage looked pathetic. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s6XMAjxUxX8.html So now when I see a small cinema camera that does 100 times better footage at, and is 5% of the size, I get a bit "weird" when I see people building them up into rigs. But yeah, as said, very informative video. Keep up the good work

@baddogentertainment6960
@baddogentertainment6960 Год назад
@Eric Norcross @Eric Norcross yes and no (man can't believe how fast 5 years went since i made that comment). I wasn't suggesting people get a 2nd camera, but rather get one camera, the "right" camera for them. The price difference between the bmpcc (og) and the bmcc/bmpc4k back then wasn't that big (nowadays the bmcc can be found cheaper than the og pockets). The bmcc/bmpc4k had higher res and bigger sensors, so if rigging up the camera is your thing, would be better to buy one of them, as you get a nicer image. Whereas the pocket was better for its portability, yet people were rigging it up.
