@TheChunguTube if you think this video implicitly accepts star signs... well, I don't know what to say. In this particular case I suspect the English understatement and ability to speak with "tongue in cheek" might have been lost somewhere midway across the Atlantic?! I too was trained to call astrology pseudoscience without evaluating it scientifically. Western (Tropical/Seasonal) Astrology is primarily based upon the relationship of the most important planet (Earth) to the most important star (our sun - "Sol"). The claim is not that the Constellations have some psychological effect. They are used only for reference. Please take a scientific approach to astrology before stating further blanket debunking statements that prove you have not. I'd be happy to discuss the science of astrology with you if you'd like. Why 27,000 years for Precession of the Equinoxes in this video? The model most often proposed states 1 degree of precession every 72 years, which gives a total cycle of 25,920 years (72 years/degrees x 360 degrees). My understanding is that 71.6 years per degree is the currently accepted rate, which would make the cycle shorter, not longer. Please explain. Thank you.

+Gemini Brett I get your point but i think it isn't necessary to have a "scientific" approach to astrology in order to understand what it has to say... only an open-minded approach and a willingness to see your life and events through its lens, to check if it sounds and feels true for you. being based on the Zodiac SIGNS, as that word suggests, astrology nowadays ends up having more to do with semantics than with hard science.
@geminibrett
@geminibrett 8 лет назад
I say have both approaches... meet in the middle... the union of the masculine and feminine. The marriage of Heaven and Earth. Most astronomers thing astrology is nonsense. Most astrologers don't know the sky. Perhaps highest truths are Easy Science. Would love to continue this conversation elsewhere.

I have a question: If the earth's axis wobbles, what is the area of the north and south poles? If the axis stood completely steady, I assume the pole would be a point. But since the axis wobbles, it would seem to me that the pole should be a circle (or an ellipse) with a certain area. Am I right? If so, approximately what is that area?
@ryanpiuma

Does this wobble impact long term weather conditions? Not saying it's the cause of ice ages or warming trends, but would this have an impact on those actions?

I love following Prof. Merrifield's astronomy videos for the science of them; but there's something I at least find interesting about the astrology side of it. When Prof. Merrifield is using Leo as an example, he makes the statement that Leo is named because there's a picture of a lion in the sky. Well there's an interesting book, The Sacred Geometry of the Ancient Greeks, and out of that book pops the statement that it wasn't so much that there was a picture of a lion in the sky and so the called it Leo; rather, they predetermined that that section was Leo (for mystical religious reasons) and then looked for the best way to construct a lion from the stars present. While astrology isn't my thing, so I don't pay attention to it much except for the mythology part of it, this might be part of the argument about why processing the coordinates don't matter in Babylonian/Greek style astrology.

@Arlemagne The poles of the earth are always the same, as far as we know. In the northern sky, the star Polaris is very close to where the earth's axis is currently pointing. Within our lifetime this will hardly change. Over about 26,000 years the pole will trace out a large circle centred on a point in the constellation of Draco. The radius of this circle is about 23.5 degrees... which matches the angle the earth is tilted, relative to our orbit around the sun. Hope this helps!

@ze_rubenator
@ze_rubenator 13 лет назад
@Arlemagne the entire earth wobbles too, not just the axis. Though the poles move about, not like you have to run after it. But you'd notice the difference from year to year. They shift too once every many, many years. Last time I think was 600-700 thousand years ago.

I dont quite understand how an orbiting object (hubble) needs to account for the earth's precession.
@TheVino3
@TheVino3 9 лет назад
Because we send it the coordinates, and we work out the coordinates from where the Earth is in relation to the sun and the stars. So basically Hubble needs to know where Earth is in order to know where it is, so it can know where to point the telescope.

@PBDPBD that's interesting but that description is kinda like "you're this and you're also that" and many of the qualities are those that apply to pretty much all human beings... the characteristics of the virgo sign are more especific a "virgoan" (or whatever) tend to be introverted, shy and lacks self confidence which is just how I am. don't get me wrong, I like science and I think stars have nothing to do with someone's life. but then again, it kinda matches my personality, so...

But if all of the universe is moving wouldn't that also need to be accounted for? Won't the distances between galaxies change over time? They can't all be moving at the same speed through space. Plus adding in distance from us - I guess closer things this movement would matter more. Anyway, I feel like a piece is missing.

What precesses? It depends on what you consider to be the fixed point, a star (minus proper motion) or the Vernal Point. In either case, it is disingenuous to say that astrologers don't precess their maps. Most of them use software incorporating either VSOP87 or a recent JPL ephemeris, and most of them prefer ecliptic coordinates of date. Somewhere along the line, precession is included.

Gemini Brett"The claim is not that the Constellations have some psychological effect." That's exactly what the claim is in ASTROlogy. That it's the a priori information about qualities associated to the archetypical characteristics of planets and perceived formations of stars that not only dictate the personality of the person but also their influence their fate. Maybe some astrologists are more loose about that, especially now since a less strict interpretation would seem to be more sensible and gives more room to maneuver. But actually using them only "as a reference" is even more false. Because then they have moved from a system based on incorrect understanding of reality, to interpretations based on nothing at all except tradition. if we dismiss everything related to the constellations and planets. Then we are actually talking about biorhythms or numerology instead.
@NicolasBoque
@NicolasBoque 8 лет назад
+Wild Hunt Trumpeter Biorhythms and Numerology may be a part of what astrological tradition poses. In the second half of the 20th century, developments have been made in our culture's comprehension upon that form of understanding reality, which is based on myth, allegory, analogy... (that which you call "incorrect" and "more false" than i dont know what form of understanding. Maybe the scientific worldview?). These developments i mention, come from junguian and transpersonal psychology, up to cosmobiology, holography, morphic resonance, fuzzy logic, fractals, chaos theory, etc... That doesn't mean that every traditional astrological postulate has found scientific proof, but that it has a value of its own that should not need be dismissed as "false" like you do. Furthermore, the problem with your argument is that you fall into the "naive picture of astrology" that Merrifield presents: thinking that astrologers base their interpretation on the drawings projected on the stars forming the constellations... As +Gemini Brett says, the mythology associated with the drawings that were projected from the constellations, are only a "reference", that could be cut off from the stars, dismiss the constellations, and project them on 12 equal divisions on the ecliptic tied to the solstices and equinoxes and name them SIGNS. Thats what western astrology in fact dows when using the Tropical Zodiac, that is what +Gemini Brett said when talking about sun-earth relationship. But why dismiss the planets?

secondly, Merrifield says that if there are two different systems of astrology, then half of them are speaking non-snese. these systems are measuring from two different perspectives with two different meanings - like the difference between Euclidian and Riemannian geometry. One says parallel lines never intersect and the other says they do. this doesn't make Mathematics non-sense, though, like the difference between the two systems of astrology, it may appear as such to the uninformed.
