Gentlemen...as someone who grew up WITH this song as a kid...I LOVE to see younger ppls faces when that first really high note hits. It really is like a religious experience in music that totally opens up this song to them and it blows them away. You can tell it just hit them right in their heart which IS where the love of music lives in all of us. This was a live performance but I forget where it was filmed. There was no such thing as auto tune back then~you either had talent OR you didn't. He is a true tenor. It says Righteous Brothers and YES there ARE two of them so find their other videos and you'll be amazed by his brothers voice also. He is a true baritone. Look for their song called You've Lost That Loving Feeling~it's a duet between them and one of their most popular hits ok? THIS song became so popular because it was close to around the time of the Vietnam War era. So a lot of soldiers from around THE WHOLE WORLD used it as their love song to their gfs and wives back home. It has won many awards worldwide. Check out the history on it ok? Enjoy!

Bobby was nursing a head cold when he performed this live on The Andy Williams Show some 57 years ago. He was nervous because his mum was in the audience for the first time. His performance was perfect and he looked gorgeous. I am 80 years old and hunger for a return to this kinder, gentler, more beautiful type of music. Unchained Melody was written in 1955 and has been covered more than 1500 times by more than 600 different artists. Bobby’s is the BEST! 🥰

I am 81 and have heard several artist before bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Guys this song was written for a low budget film called Unchained made in 1955 Bobby did the cover live no auto tune, he had to get it right first time, he was singing to his mother, this was her first time hearing him sing live in front of an audience. Well what can we say. Brilliant. Years later the song featured in the movie Ghost starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swazye. ❤️

Great reaction on both your parts...Bobby Hatfield was one of those rare singers called a Countertenor, this means he was able to move from tenor into soprano with no effort at all,I'm sure he still had to train to use his voice at its fullest capacity but I think it also came naturally.

No crack, coz its not falsetto. Bobby was a countertenor, meaning he could cover the entire spectrum of both tenor and soprano naturally. Countertenors are very rare, like 1 per generation, and Bobby was even more special, he could go higher than many sopranos, never falsetto, just pure natural. He had a span of 4-5 octaves depending on the source, absolutely unmatched. Bill covered bass, baritone and into low tenor. Combined the 2 covered every note on a piano.

These guys epitomized "blue-eyed soul". Their paasion and harmonies were simply stellar. Interesting factoid: while they never missed a beat when performing, Bobby Hatfield (the blond) had stage fright and would puke before every performance ... and then go out, face the audience, and give a timeless musical masterpiece. And in this song at the end you can see his joy...no act. Both these guys enjoyed what they did to the max.

@Hillary's emails to Lorne i think at times those performers must not have really known the level of their own talent and probably feared disappointing their audiences. The fact they could rise above it to stir our souls is a tribute to theirs and their professionalism.

My late uncle used to call this a "guaranteed panty dropper" of a song. Yes, it can make any lady (or man) swoon... LOL! Many different covers of it by different artists over the years and yes, Elvis did a great job with it, but Bobby Hatfield's ethereal voice is a perfect match. It's always been my favorite version. He did this in front of a live audience and on live television; decades before autotune or any type of computer enhancements existed, unlike how it's used so prevalently in today's music...

Bobby Hatfield died of a cocaine overdose according to what I saw published. Bill Medley has permission to use Bobby Hatfield's voice dubbed in. I have seen Bill Medley perform in Branson, Missouri. The evening I saw the Righteous Brothers perform was October 14th but I do not remember the year. My late husband, Joe bought us the tickets for my birthday. Have had lots of nice gits for my birthday. A friend named Sigalit who lives in Henderson, Nevada asked me what show ticket I wanted to see in Las Vegas for my birthday. I commented the Eagles. She was significantly younger than myself and said she knew the concierge at the MGM Grand. That show sold out in 2 1/2 hours but Sigalit delivered. The Eagles concert was by far the best concert I ever attended. Suspect you and I are close in age as my late husband also served in Vietnam. US Navy. By the way, Sigalit who is Isreal, thought she only knew two Eagles's songs. Tirns out she inly didn't know two of the songs as the Eagles, like the Righteous Brothers are classics! Hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane. By the way, Bobby Hatfield sang his high school fight song from Appleton, Wisconsin. Bobby was a Wisconsinitr and Bill Medley is from California. Bill Medley was instrumental in helping get the 3 Texas Tenors' careers off the ground. If you have never seen them, please do! They have voices like angels! They sing every genre of music in their show from Pavaroti, to old rock and roll to country to theater classics. From a ladies' perspective they definitely are eye candy!

Unchained Melody was a song composed for the prison film 'Unchained' (1955). The music was by Alex North (1910-1991) and lyrics by Hy Zaret (1907-2007). The song was first sung by African American opera singer, Howard University Professor, and Broadway and film actor Todd Duncan... A true Renaissance Man... The prison film 'Unchained' (1955) was based on a book by Kenyon J. Scudder 'Prisoners are People.' Since 1955 almost every recording artist in every language has sung this song. Hence it has become one of the most recorded songs in the history of music. It took the live performance of Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' on the Andy Williams Show (1965). That finally cemented the beauty, and reverence that is 'Unchained Melody' to audiences around the world. Bobby Hatfield's version made this song one of the most beloved, and sung songs in history. His version is the quintessential version of them all. And it is his version of 1965 that artist have used, and are still using today. His legendary performance will stand the test of time. God speed his love to you Bobby Hatfield. For you truly gave the world, and epic performance that will live forever. Rest In Peace...
