The city to remember
Rijeka is the seat of the Primorsko-goranska County, a region which consists of an unusual link between the sea and mountains extending to the Mount Učka across to the Goran mountains as far as the Velebit. To the west of Rijeka, lies the Opatija Riviera, the oldest and most popular Croatian tourist region. To the east is the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera. Rijeka can thank Gorski kotar - the most preserved part of the region - for its high quality drinking water and its clear air.

If we have to be accurate...Fiume was first Roman ( then all in all we can call it Italian yet) and then after the middle ages became part of Austrian Empire, but still the most part of the city was inhabited by Italians apart from Sussana area which was the ONLY quartier with croatian majority. It became Croatian after 1945 because was given you as a present for no reasons....

@K181800 The slavs immigrated in Dalmatia and Istria mostly during Austrian occupation, because Austria wanted to de-italianise the area, but still slavs were a minority in the coastal area ( and in the cities ) even after II WW....so as you can see you absolutely can't consider those territories as Croats

@scalper2009 Il fatto stesso che voi croati reagiate in questa maniera quando si parla di Fiume, è esplicativo quando 10 libri.....è chiarissimo che fianche voi sapete PERFETTAMENTE quanto poco croate fossero l'Istria e la Dalmazia, e quali sono state le modalità di Slavizzazione di quei luoghi....Il fatto che ancora oggi c'è chi parla italiano lì, e che sono tutte città ufficialmente bilingui...ti dice che non sono mai state croate...ce le avete rese a forza

@fiumens Questo è quello che TUTTI i paesi hanno fatto nei secoli, la francia con la Corsica, la Germania con la Prussia Polacca, la Spagna con la Catalogna....tutti i paesi europei hanno fatto una politica di nazionalizzazione forzata, ma la differenza sta nel fatto che Istria e Dalmazia sono da sempre state culturalmente Italiane, la loro slavizzazione era avvenuta dopo come misura cautelativa dell'Austria Ungheria.

@scalper2009 Infatti non ho detto che siano di origine balcanica, ma i Rom sono stanziati nella penisola balcanica da secoli, anche in altri posi certo...ma principalpmennte nei Balcani, la loro origine presuntamente indiana deriva da DEDUZIONI etnico-.linguistiche....fatto sta che vengono dai Balcani, ti piaccia o no e sono maggiormente in Romania/Bulgaria.....ed è penisola balcanica mi pare....

@K181800 Istria and Dalmatia were unified to the Italian mainland BEFORE fascist era, and they have always been of italic culture, they were roman, then venetian, then napoleonic ( but because venice was under french occupation ) and then under Austria ( because the Venice Repubblic was austrian as well ), and then, after the III reunification war ( which corresponds to the I ww ) Istria and Dalmatia became part of Italian Kingdom

@K181800 German kings???' When :) what are you talking about....the passage is Venice, Napoleon and Austria....then Italy, but during all this time it stayed Italic as culture.... Istria was like Trieste and Trento...a claimed italian land. D'Annunzio was in 1919...not in 1939....and it was just Fiume, Istria was already part of Italian kingdom

Ricorda che Istria e Dalmazia sono state annesse al regno d'Italia dal 1918, quindi prima del Fascismo, ed erano comunque terre Italofone da sempre, e lo erano rimaste anche nel periodo napoleonico ed in quello asburgico, anche se l'Austria fece immigrare molti slavi nella regione proprio per de-italianizzarla.

@K181800 There are NOT regions who kept croatian or greek or albanian as a language...there are only veeeery little comunities in southern italy (called linguistic ilands), they are only small villages of less than 1000 people....I even saw some of them, and it's much more a folk attraction than a real bilinguism.

Well, actually Zara was the most important "all Italic" city on eastern adriatic, and the big Istrian cities were all venetian (as you can see in architecture) the slavs were in the internal lands, and just the minory of istria was slavic during venetian time, the Slavic language was naver dominant in Zara, Pola, Fiume, Ragusa Traù etc....never, just after the Austrian time, when Austrians encouraged slavic immigration in order to put Italians in minority

@fiumens Ed in ogni caso devi sempre considerare il periodo storico, oggi una politica di nazionalizzazione forzata sarebbe inaccettabile, oggi tutti i paesi civili tutelano le minoranze linguistiche, ma all'epoca non era così, la minoranza si doveva adeguare, e Croati e Sloveni erano una minoranza.

@fiumens Quello che voglio dire è che quelle terre, prima erano romane, poi sono state veneziane, poi asburgiche ( ma sempre veneziane, quindi italiane, anche venezia, trento, trieste erano impero austrico) e poi regno d'Italia, la Yugoslavia ( o croazia...o quello che vuoi) non c'entra nulla....si è limitata a riceverle in dono dalle potenze dopo la II guerra mondiale....

@K181800 Well as a matter of fact Dalmatia an Istria were really roman, and latin speaker, since there were florishing Romanic language (indigenous) such as Istroromanian and Dalmatian, anyways Illirians are not slavs, and are not the ancestors of Croatians.

@K181800 Which part of northen Italy are you talking about...Trieste mabye?! Well Trieste has the same history of Istria and Dalmatia, with the only difference that it was in Zone A....so it was reunified....otherwise it would have ended up as istria and dalmatia. The only reason why croats are a majority there nowadays it is because of foibe and ethnic persecutions during Titus time...

I just came home from Rijeka and Opatija. Enormous Croatian flags were seen everywhere in the city, and almost everything related to Fiume's Italian and Hungarian history was eliminated. I read a book about Rijeka's past: Both the Italian fascists and D'Annunzio as well Tito's Yugoslav partisans were killers. After World War II. the majority of the population fled, replaced by Croats and other Yugoslav population. Despite of the sad pages of Rijeka's modern history, I don't blame today Croatia.

@zosozox Almost every bigger city in croatia is connected with modern expressway. Croatia is a well-developed country by trave.state.gov standards. its true that its economy has been infected but not collapsed. Also Croatia has a very small percent of violent crimes, and crime rate is very low when compared with some other countries like UK. No electricity? Are you kidding? No clean water? Croatia is one of the richest countries in the world when we are talking about clean water and 3rd in Eu.

I am half croat and half swede but i am born and raised in sweden but when i look at pictures of my second half ( croatia ) i get tiers in my eyes... @scalper2009 Infatti non ho detto che non devi scrivere quello che vuoi, dico solo ai miei connazionali di non abbassarsi al tuo livello....e comunque Rijeka è diventata a maggioranza croata solo dopo la guerra, così come l'Istria costiera e così come Zara.....che stava tanto sulle palle a Tito proprio perchè quasi 100% Italiana....le conosci le ragioni del "Martirio di Zara" no?!

I really can't see the connection between your comment and this video. If you got something against Croats I suggest that you post it on some "Anti-Croatian forum" or whatever. There is no flawless nation on this world. You should understand that there are good people and bad people everywhere and that your comment was quite chauvinist. BTW, around 25% people in Croatia support the accession to the European Union. Cheers
