Comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, his management has said.
In this, slightly surreal, interview with Sky's political editor Adam Boulton, Mr Mayall discusses the importance of politics to satire, among other things.

He talks with such ease, comfort and familiarity it's difficult to watch him without feeling like he's one of your mates. Especially when he turns to camera. He must have been such a friendly, warm, entertaining man to know. I wish I could have met him.

I miss his joy, it was unfiltered from his heart to the camera--notice how he can't help but look in the camera? I love that about him.

I saw this show live about a month after this. It was amazing, Rik was just a force of nature on stage. He was the least professional person on stage, the rest of the cast acted their parts with deadly seriousness. Rik was just having fun, even if he fluffed a line he looked at the audience and laughed. He constantly broke the fourth wall. He was a just funny person and had this ability to make everyone in audience feel like they were sharing an in joke with him. A very rare talent and performer.

absoulutely agree..the new statesman, living doll, bottom....so really sad for all of his family, his wife, and why do we have to wait until someone passes away, before we see the very best of them?

I think Rik was one of a kind,hard to come to terms with his death,certainly too young.He gave happiness to many of my generation,I thank him for that...he brightened the 80s..........RIP.

Absolutely agree, when The Comic Strip Presents was on we always said first and foremost " is Rik in this one?".A true, genuine legend. God Bless Him !

So many folks are saying how much they miss Rik and I get it completely. It's not even his work, it's him - just his reassuring presence became a very comfortable backdrop to grow up in front of. That he was also piss funny was really just a bonus. So yeah, I miss him too.

so i just read about his death in the newspaper. anyone know about what happened to him? I am a huge fan of bottom and drop dead fred, black adder, the young ones. Rik was hilarious
