@Garry Smalls - you are taking a very narrow and blinkered view of the karate world. This execution of the Tomari Bassai is superb. The techniques are crisp, focused and the use of hip rotation is excellent. This is a different style to Shotokan and the JKA is only one branch of Shotokan. I have trained for over 30 years in Shotokan and I can appreciate the excellence in other styles, and this is excellence. No style is better than another, but different. Usami Rika is a World Champion and deservedly so.

I first came across Rika Usami on a previous You Tube video (Kata CHATAN YARA KUSANKU) and immediately taken with her demonstration & teaching method. I'm a Shotokan karateka with well over 40 years experience but thanks to my friends in Wado Ryu and Goju Kai, I soon learnt that there are many other good methods of karate other than the Shotokan that I study. Been there, done that. Forget about style & look deeper.

Bonjour Rika la compétence. Ta compétence ne date pas d'aujourd'hui. Mais elle date à partir de cette vidéo que je viens de voir. Donc votre merveilleuse technique de base se trouve dans tes veines depuis longtemps. C'est pour celà que les profondeurs des arts martiaux t'obéissent avant l'âge prévu... Cela provient toujours de la bonté du coeur et la croyance en ce que disent les " SENSEI " en la matière énergétique. Ces paroles que tu viens de lire te sont transmises d'un auteur d'une thèse ( technique/énergétique ) en arts martiaux du 1e au 11e Dan. C'est pour celà qu'il faut s'interresser à sa compétence et non pas à avoir un grade ou réputation vide de la sensation réelle de la vraie compétence. Ton début dans les arts martiaux a été bien choisit... Je te souhaite des performances meilleures...

I still remember when I learned just for a few weeks in karate shotokan in my hometown, most students wanted to learn kata as if by learning will make you a true karateka and can fight to defend yourself in street attack. When i got old, I saw a video of Euchi ryu Te and that makes me sense that karate is all about conditioning your striking tools and body to be able to received impact, and fighting technique. They have also kata but it seems that even if you will not learn those you can be an effective karateka if you conditioned your tools, body, and study technique. I still want to learn kata, even just one, for body coordination routine.

wow interesting. this seems very similar to bassai dai in shotokan, but either a different kata, or a different style of karate, as the moves were slightly different, maybe less exaggerated than shotokan.
