RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER (1974) by Steely Dan

'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' was off Pretzel Logic, and appears to be a favourite of Steely Dan fans. It was released in 1974.
It's intro is a nod to 'Song For My Father' by Horace Silver. Donald Fagen said in a 2011 interview when asked about the intro 'There was never a conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver's intro. We wrote this Brazilian bass line and when drummer Jim Gordon heard it, he played his figures. As for the piano line, I think I had heard it on an old Sergio Mendes album. Maybe that where Horace heard it, too [laughs]'.
Several musicians outside the band help out on the track. Michael Omartian plays keyboard, Dean Parks acoustic guitar, Jim Gordon drums, Victor Feldman percussion, and Timothy Schmit along with Fagen on backing vocals. I have done a slideshow video featuring most of these guest musos, as well as the usual Dan suspects, Donald Fagen (vocals), Walter Becker (bass) and Jeff Baxter (guitar, solo) .Denny Dias was not on the track.
This list of musos for this track is taken from the liner notes on 'A Decade of Steely Dan' compilation CD and a book I have on Steely Dan entitled 'Reelin in the Years' by Brian Sweet. According to Sweet, Jeff Baxter played the solo without an amplifier, just plugged directly into the board. Apparently the solo had to be done several times because of a 'blip' appearing on the tape. After sending the tape to the manufacturer 3M for analysis, it was found to have some little lumps which turned out to be mustard from a workman's sandwich!
Sweet also stated that the song was based on a student named Rikki from Bard College who had made an impression on Becker and Fagen, (although they were not known for giving straight answers when explaining their songs, so who knows?).
I tried to include images of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen album covers. I also obtained an add on to Windows Movie Maker, which gives a few more panning and zoom options. This is the first video using those.
(Update: as of 11 June 2012, this video is the most popular of the 90 music videos I have up on my channel with 502,904 hits). Further update as of 4 Sept 2017, it now has 4.180,112 hits. Also sadly, I have just found out that co founder and composer Walter Becker has just passed. RIP.
Comments are invited.

As a kid I had what school officials called “pacing problems.” Just rocking back and forth and walking back n forth. I became an attorney. I also taught school myself. But I remember when I was at my worst as a kid, I had an astute teacher that gave me musical therapy and I was introduced to the symmetrically beautiful composition of Steely Dan as I “walked it off”. @@reesemorgan2259 Oh it was a great trip, thank you. Was my 1st time to visit CA, flew into LA, CA with my mom. Fleetwood Mac band was on the plane too, didn’t realize who they were until ‘77 Rumours came out. My relatives took us sightseeing everywhere, oldest brother Robert-age 23 was in the Air Force in Nevada. He drove down in his topless jeep & took me to see Jaws movie, and Santa Monica Pier to see the ocean for 1st time eeek haha, I was kinda scared but got in knee deep. The Griffith Observatory, J Paul Getty Museum, baseball game @ Dodgers Stadium were highlights too. I wish I had my great aunt & uncles Hollywood address, as I want to see what the house & surroundings look like now. I remember homes being built below theirs because I had the “hots” for one of the construction framers who was tan-muscular & shirtless. My Great Aunt told me “he looks thirsty, you should take him something to drink”. I was too shy but looking back, I wish I would have! haha.

It seems Steely Dan is loved by all ages, once folks are exposed to their musical genius. The way they fused genres- rock, jazz and pop (think the #11 hit tune, 'Peg', and how wildly popular it was back in 1978), I honestly think Steely Dan is one of the most sophisticated groups to ever exist. 1974 I was a confused teenager looking for belonging.. Music saved me - so did this tune. Sweet, smooth melodies and lyrics... great story lines

This was a great song back in 1974. I too was a teenager, a little different I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I was getting ready to deploy to Okinawa when this was a hit. Sad time for me had to say goodbye to my cute girl friend. After 2 months on Okinawa she mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter" broke my heart.

I know exactly what you mean. I think art (music in this case) is viewed as a luxury- when I see it(especially for youngsters) as a necessity.

Songs are creative & and imaginative. I've yet to find any band that sounds even remotely similar. Now, that is a pretty unique distinction, but they are simply unbelievable musicians and artists

I always loved their music and all the albums, great musicians, awesome songs, a music that lifts you up, including this little pearl "Rikki don't lose that number". And yes, RIP to the late Walter.

@@barbmichalski6953 it's amazing to hear the sound track of my life. I can even conjure up the smell of the summer of 73. Heard Seals and Crofts today and the smell of wild ginger flooded my house, nearly knocking me over.

I agree. Summer of 1974, I was in the United States Marine Corps home on 30 days leave, before I transferred to Okinawa. Remember this song and other ones before kissing my girlfriend goodbye. I kissed her goodbye then she cried like a baby. I felt so sorry for her. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.
