Rikon Lathe 70-3040 Overview

RIKON Power Tools has an industry-first solution for increasing capacity on its 70-3040 full-sized lathe. And it doesn’t involve change-overs or buying any extra accessories. You can increase both its swing over bed and distance between centers at the turn of a dial! This lathe’s solid-steel bed is double-stacked and interlocked on a rail system. Between the two beds, a separate 24-volt DC motor drives a continuous lead screw and actuator to slide the lathe’s top bed section open or closed. The mechanism is sealed inside a tubular casing with an IP54 rating, to protect it from dust and moisture. Powering it from fully closed to fully open takes about half a minute.

Well, I got one today! Thank you very much, from my wife. Price 4k. Broken back, priceless. This is a beast to get off your truck bed. Anyway got it set up and positioned, will run electricity tomorrow. So far its a pretty piece all clean and glowing in its new home. That will change.

I just ordered this lathe, so I appreciate the review. One note, however: this design is not an “industry first”. Stubby lathes employed this exact design feature, though I believe the upper bed was moved manually.

Interesting concept, but the tailstock seems too close to the headstock. Without a swingaway tailstock, you would need to open the lathe up even to hollow a small bowl. Hitting the tailstock with your elbow ain't fun.

Probably not made to do this, but is it possible to unbolt the motor mast of the Rikon 70-3040 and turn it around, for outboard turning?

No … but sliding the bed open allows turnings up to 31.25” … that’s massive.

I've had my eye on this lathe as a good answer for big capacity in a small shop. According to specs there is no spindle lock so that is a concern for removing stubborn chucks etc from the spindle. Has this been an issue in actual practice?

I was also worried about this, but got the lathe anyway. The spindle has a wrench flat on it, and the lathe comes with two huge wrenches. These have made me not miss the spindle lock at all. It's a great lathe.

Not to be critical, but..........an industry first solution? Uh maybe for something like a home shop wood lathe, but it's far from a new concept. There was at least one commercial sized pattern makers lathe with that feature specifically made for turning wood, and a few metal working lathes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kt--DLLRJ7c.html. Solid "steel" bed? Highly doubtful, why cast steel when cast iron is easier, cheaper, better and has much more desirable quality's for tools exactly like this lathe. A 21st century designed and built lathe with mid 18th century or older chuck mounting? There's far superior spindle nose designs that are already well over 100 years old. Yes it's got some desirable features, but @ roughly $3800 base price they should and could have done a whole lot better.

rikon make the legs more higth Am 6'3" this lathe with that short legs be bellow the bottom of End my center of my pants not safe known

You can put the tool test on the bottom ways and use the tool test extender/riser. That way the tool test can be used right up to the headstock in any configuration.
