My god, it's incredible to watch Jenny back then. Comparing how she sings this song now to then... not only did she get very creative with the performance of the song, but she sings it so peacefully nowadays - she's happy. You can just see the pain in her face as she sang these lyrics back in 2002. I love Jenny so much. Her lyrics have always been so passionate and honest.
I see people interpret this song as optimistic, like a rally cry... But Jenny's vocal recording (and personality, imo) point to sarcasm and resentment (regarding the obligation to hide symptoms of depression; leaking it risks pushing away those you care about). This video shows the sarcasm and spite so plainly. It's a middle finger to depression. No other song confronts the topic this adeptly or honestly. It makes me realize others know what this truly is--"You're not alone and this isn't your fault." Society doesn't take it seriously, and we're mad we have to fight it alone (if only to elude the stigma) "We'll fight and we'll make it through, (and we'll fake it if we have to)."
I totally get this. But interestingly many people also seem to think her tone in this song has changed over time. If you look at more recent performances you can see the optimism that people like to see the song with
@@maddyjohnston-walker9326Yes! I noticed this, too. It reminds me of when Postal Service did their 2013 shows... They couldn't help but smile and have fun even though many of those songs are pretty bleak!
I only discovered this song last year, I was literally a baby when it came out. It amazing how Jenny lewis's vocals just transcend time. I honestly think this is one of the most powerful songs out there
I saw them in Detroit at the magic stick on this tour. Had no idea what I was in for, but fell in love with this band that night. This song crushed then, and now nearly two decades later, it is even more cathartic and beautiful. Thank you to the band and uploader. This is great content.
Oh yes. This fckn song. I couldn't believe how much I related to every word in every way she conveyed them. Solidified my suspicions that I suffered greatly from depression that stemmed from severe bipolar disorder. My subsequent numerous therapists agreed wholeheartedly. Great fckn song, also helped me to realize that I wasn't the only one whose mother called insane and high with rotted insides, rest in the peace you never found and when saw it in others chased away screaming obscenities at in life.
What an amazing historical record! This needs to be featured in the (I hope soon to be coming) Jenny Lewis documentary!! Staying in tight on her face was a great call. What a performance!!! Thanks to the camera man and to Jenny!
Sometimes in the morning I am petrified and can't move Awake but cannot open my eyes And the weight is crushing down on my lungs I know I can't breathe And hope someone will save me this time And your mother's still calling you insane and high Swearing it's different this time And you tell her to give in to the demons that possess her And that God never blessed her insides Then you hang up the phone and feel badly for upsetting things And crawl back into bed to dream of a time When your heart was open wide and you loved things just because Like the sick and the dying And sometimes when you're on, you're really fucking on And your friends they sing along and they love you But the lows are so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap And it teases you for weeks in it's absence But you'll fight and you'll make it through You'll fake it if you have to And you'll show up for work with a smile You'll be better you'll be smarter And more grown up and a better daughter Or son and a real good friend You'll be awake and you'll be alert You'll be positive though it hurts And you'll laugh and embrace all your friends You'll be a real good listener You'll be honest, you'll be brave You'll be handsome, you'll be beautiful You'll be happy Your ship may be coming in You're weak but not giving in To the cries and the wails of the valley below Your ship may be coming in You're weak but not giving in And you'll fight it you'll go out fighting all of them...
I guess the Orange is the new Black show brought this song to light some. Good. Awesome song and band. I’m sure plenty of people will love getting into them even if they may be a little late to the game. Brace yourselves. It’s a rollercoaster.
