Gimnazija Kranj Christmas Concert Series - Anniversary Edition Series.
In this series, I am going to re-upload some of the milestones from our performing and recording productions in the last 15 years. Our lead master technician Mr. Iztok Zupan remastered all of our analog audio recordings in amazing digital Hi-Res audio landscape. He used sophisticated rerecording processes, rubidium clock processes and some other exotic black magic for one of the most superior sound, you can get it on youtube.
This recording is particularly legendary. Our balance engineer Matjaž Culiberg from National Radio did amazing sound design. The golden generation of the orchestra played this milestone recording with never-seen-before mastery and artistic excellence. Many of those musicians are playing now in the best world symphonic orchestras: Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonhalle Zürich, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna State Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Kremerata Baltica, Bavarian State Opera and other renowned orchestras around the Globe. Our master engineer Iztok Zupan carefully inspected this beautiful audio material and did a spectacular re-recording audio miracle. Enjoy this legendary and one of the best performances on RU-vid.
Maestro Nejc Bečan is a conductor
solo violin: concert master Matjaž Bogataj
This orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general. The name "Scheherazade" refers to the main character Shahrazad of the One Thousand and One Nights. It is considered Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular work.
During the winter of 1887, as he worked to complete Alexander Borodin's unfinished opera Prince Igor, Rimsky-Korsakov decided to compose an orchestral piece based on pictures from One Thousand and One Nights as well as separate and unconnected episodes. After formulating musical sketches of his proposed work, he moved with his family to the Glinki-Mavriny dacha, in Nyezhgovitsy along the Cherementets Lake (near present-day Luga, in Leningrad Oblast). The dacha where he stayed was destroyed by the Germans during World War II.
During the summer, he finished Scheherazade and the Russian Easter Festival Overture. Notes in his autograph orchestral score show that the former was completed between June 4 and August 7, 1888. Scheherazade consisted of a symphonic suite of four related movements that form a unified theme. It was written to produce a sensation of fantasy narratives from the Orient.
Initially, Rimsky-Korsakov intended to name the respective movements in Scheherazade "Prelude, Ballade, Adagio and Finale". However, after weighing the opinions of Anatoly Lyadov and others, as well as his own aversion to a too-definitive program, he settled upon thematic headings, based upon the tales from The Arabian Nights.
The composer deliberately made the titles vague so that they are not associated with specific tales or voyages of Sinbad. However, in the epigraph to the finale, he does make reference to the adventure of Prince Ajib. In a later edition, Rimsky-Korsakov did away with titles altogether, desiring instead that the listener should hear his work only as Oriental-themed symphonic music that evokes a sense of the fairy-tale adventure, stating: All I desired was that the hearer if he liked my piece as symphonic music, should carry away the impression that it is beyond a doubt an Oriental narrative of some numerous and varied fairy-tale wonders and not merely four pieces played one after the other and composed on the basis of themes common to all the four movements.
He went on to say that he kept the name Scheherazade because it brought to everyone’s mind the fairy-tale wonders of Arabian Nights and the East in general.
The work consists of four movements:
I. The Sea and Sinbad's Ship
Largo e maestoso - Lento - Allegro non troppo - Tranquillo (E minor - E major)
II. The Kalandar Prince
Lento - Andantino - Allegro molto - Vivace scherzando - Moderato assai - Allegro molto ed animato (B minor)
III. The Young Prince and The Young Princess
Andantino quasi allegretto - Pochissimo più mosso - Come prima - Pochissimo più animato (G major)
IV. Festival at Baghdad. The Sea. The Ship Breaks against a Cliff Surmounted by a Bronze Horseman
Allegro molto - Lento - Vivo - Allegro non troppo e maestoso - Tempo come I (E minor - E major)

These amazing young musicians come from throughout Slovenia. Every year, each high school in Slovenia nominates four students to attend Gimnazija Kranj school. The school sends out a selection team to interview each student. The selection process is very much like the selection process for the American military academies, with the addition of proficiency in English and their chosen instrument. Gimnazija Kranj enrollment is about 1,000 students and life for students from outside of the capital is very much like a college campus. The age range of the orchestra is 14-18. The conductor, Nejc Bečan, formed the orchestra in 2005 with 12 musicians when he was just 18 years old. Former members of the orchestra can be found today performing in some of the world's greatest symphonies.

This is a good performance and a great technical recording. I wanted to particularly mention the conductor, Maestro Nejc Bečan. I was stunned to realize he was only 25 at this time. He was exactly and perfectly what the students needed in terms of his conducting style, and all of this, without score, from a 25 yr old. I do hope he will become better known on the world stage, as he surely deserves. I see several people mentioned the first clarinetist, who indeed was expressive and competent. I'd like to also mention the first oboist, who was also very proficient. And a general shout-out to the brass - often the part of a youth orchestra one has to cross one's fingers most tightly about - well done to all of them.

As I said of the original audio/video upload, there is no better live performance recording of this composition available today. This is no multiple take, spliced and overdubbed studio creation. This is real performance art. And yes, it is clearly apparent that magic was used in the audio engineering, as mere technology could not bring us the total sound and beauty of these musicians. May God bless all involved in bringing this performance to life and posterity. As this performance has blessed me many times. (The ladies of the orchestra are so lovely, so special. Thank you all for sharing your beauty and talent.) Mr. Zevnik, please find us another youth orchestra of this level of talent and professionalism. As for my experience, Sheherazade best execution ever. Never, as a 'dean' passionate listener of beautiful music, have I found myself rediscovering with amazement as a child, the technical mastery, firmness, brightness and charm of this young orchestra and its conductor, and at the same time, as if by magic, bearer of an experience that leaves you speechless, which combined with a sound engineered with carthusian mastery that I found second only to live listening, gives a completely new light to what I consider among my favorite musical paintings of all time. If everyone were to participate as spectators, the human being would be at least in these moments better (but alas it is not so). I can do no more than pay homage to this magnificent orchestra, the conductor and of course Rimsky-Korsakov with his heavenly 'Sheherazade'. כמה חוזק ועוצמה יש לפסוקים המוזיקלים לחזור על עצמם במיקצבים אין סופיים ובווארציות מגוונות...מעוררים קשת של רגשות בנגינת יחיד ורבים....

The best interpretation I have heard...bar none...even big time orchestra stuffed shirts...who take themselves so seriously their music comes out wooden...not these guys...they are really into this music...bravo!

I must have attended this Symphony quite a lot of times one of them was performed by Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, another by the legendary Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, but honestly by far this orchestra surpassed each and every performance by any orchestra that I have attended. Stunning is surely an understatement! Bravo to those beautiful young artists especially Matiaz (the violinist soloist) kisses to you everyone! You made my night 💐💐💐💐

Siempre me fascino Scherezade, sobre todo la parte del principe kalandor, es ensoñadora y despierta imagenes de romance y aventura como pocas melodias logran y ver la interpretacion es algo maravilloso

Brilliant rendering of this perhaps the greatest tone poem. Never heard better after hearing a dozen versions of this work. The sound is great too! Thanks for the post. Jamshed K Delvadavala Mumbai.

No words will do, just listen. The young lady handled the bad clarinet valve best she could while giving a sparkling performance.

Primož... I will enthusiastically second Kenneth's comment. The original recording was absolutely beautiful. Your remastered version here is absolutely spectacular. Hard to believe that it was possible to improve on the original. Congratulations. And I have already forwarded it to several friends around the planet. A hui hou... Conrad 🌴🌴🎼 P.s.: Please correct any errors I may have made to Marc Collins in reply to his question about Matjaž and Maruša.

Conrad in Hawaii. If you are still following, can I please ask a question? Who is the principle flute player, the young blonde woman who sits in front of Nadja. She is a wonderful performer but her name is not acknowledged through the time she was in the orchestra (I think about 2009 to 2015). Has she gone on to a further career with her flute?

Wonderful. Marvelous, Amazing. This is even better than the first version which I fell in love with when I first saw and heard it. I've listened to the earlier version so often that if it had been on vinyl it would have been etched by the needle.
