Man, you actually broke a window and dropped a piece of glass shattered everywhere in your room. How can anyone watch this video without dropping a like. I’m debating whether I should get the Ring Alarm Glass Break Sensor along with all my other Ring devices or those that attach to the windows (pretty ugly tbh). Your test gave me the confidence that the Ring Alarm Glass Break Sensor will do the job. Thanks.
Works great. Just be aware if you clink silverware, cups, glasses or plates while cleaning or putting up it can mimic a broken glass sound and set off the alarm. This has happened twice to us in about the 2 week period we’ve had it, but no big deal and would rather have the security for when we are not at home.
This is why you set this only on alarm modes... and not when the alarm is disarmed. In home mode for example, we only set it before everybody goes to sleep and alarm is disarmed first thing in the morning.
Thank you for the review - honestly, it was one of the things that almost kept me from moving to Ring years ago - having a "traditional" (Honeywell Ademco) alarm system I was used to having a lot more choices around equipment and especially sensors / contacts. This is great news (although I'll need to watch the entire review). For testing they make glass break testing boxes but they aren't cheap - between $40 and $150 - plenty of bad reviews on the cheaper ones. My professional installer (years ago for the Honeywell gear) just used two screw drivers hit together about 2 or 3 feet from the glass break sensor. Over time we noticed that some household noises would trigger the sensor too such as a broom that was upright falling on to the hardwood floor would trigger the sensor - basically, loud "snapping" or "cracking" sounds.
You are truly one of the best at what you do. Thanks again for providing this community for these informative videos. I’m sure your wife gave you an earful for breaking the glass in the house. 🤣
Excellent comparative analysis. I was planning on just relying on Alexa Guard but you rescued me. Having a siren triggered is necessary for those who are in meetings or giving lectures all day whereby I cannot be checking a phone
Thank you for this informative video you covered everything you need to know great job if I need this yours would be the go to channel to find out ring should pay you as there man to explain there products
I did that with my Ring when I received it. Only from my phone speaker, within 6", and was able to trigger it easily. Any more distance, and no trigger. Far from a 'real world' scenario though.
Man your neighbors must love you when you’re testing these things. Also I’d recommend keep your day job since that whole burglar thing didn’t seem to work out. ;)
Question, when you were banging on the glass trying to break it your alarm went off, so which device heard the banging and set off the alarm? Thanks in advance.
Hi LifeHackster - love your channel! Do you NOT find it strange that these breakage sensors need to be mounted so high vs. the Alexa guard being at ground (table top) level? Could this be why Alexa guard is not as effective? I rely on motion sensors when I am "away" as I have too many windows for sensors on each one. Based on your review these look to be much more effective as the alarm sounds almost immediately upon breakage vs. motion already in my home that motion sensors provide. I see Amazon offers a 2-pack of these glass breakage sensors for $69.99 vs. one at $39.99 as I would need at least two to do the job for my home. I'm thinking I will buy these based on your review. One more question, Have you tried or are using the Ring water-leak sensors? I have two of these setup and have had one alarm from a toilet tank sweating in warm weather on the floor but have read "mixed" reviews on these. My other water-leak sensor is setup in my laundry room where my washer and hot water tank is. As you have stated I too am very pleased with my Ring Pro upgrade. Even at $200 a year for 24/7 everything and Co2 monitoring and cellular backup it's still cheaper than most systems out there! Having been an ADT fool years ago they only offered a fraction of what Ring does at $55+ a month and now I hear ADT "sucks" you into a (3) year contract now! And even higher contract breakage fees! NO Wonder! ADT is NOT a good home security setup in my view in today's times for the prices they command! My ADT system was "Fred Flintstone" level even at that time several years ago and "they" tried telling me "they are the best!" Well, now I'm convinced they are the "best" at ripping you off for what you get per month!
Yes..these are definitely better the alexa guard. I have the ring leak sensor and I’m actually going to do a review of another brand pretty soon and this one has valve controller..we will see how it goes.
Hi Mr LifeHackster, I tested Alexa Guard glass break detection 3 times, 2 time were recordings of glass breaking and the 3rd was a small piece of glass I had in the garage. All 3 tests Alexa sent me notifications. But one thing I noticed, the app will not send a notification if the app is open. I had to actually close the app for it to send me notifications. Just my experience. I'm using an IPhone and Echo Gen 2. Great Video!
I have to test this again..Alexa guard is not really reliable. It detected smoke alarm a while back and it wasn’t even in away mode..actually my alarm was disarmed..
@@LifeHackster I tested guard smoke alarm detection about a month ago, I also found it to be hit or miss "unrealible" . Distance seemed to have a lot to do with it tho. Thanks for your respnce.
Thank you for this review! Does Ring specify a maximum height? I might put these on the ceiling, about 9-10ft up. I also have a lot of corners in my house so I'm wondering if they'll prevent the sound from being picked up by the glass-break.
Ring does not want to save lives, they just want to try to prevent break-ins. If you have a gun against your head and alarm is going off, they call you and ask for your code word, and you are forced to act calm and say your code word, they hang up and you are assaulted and killed. Ring needs to ALSO have a code word for "HELP ME!! I'M UNDER DURESS!"
Yes, I know that..but it is still not a quite break (most house windows are not tempered) and the alarm will still go off even when using an escape hammer.
I won’t use these because of how easy they false alarm. Instead I use the magnetic door sensors - one on the frame & one on the glass, way more reliable and zero false alarms.
If this can hear glass breaking from 25 feet away, then I call b.s. on their Smoke/CO Listener having to be placed only 4 inches away from your detector!
I watched my grandson take a knife and break into a window by sliding knife between the two panes … we had locked ourselves out … now I know how criminals get in without breaking glass …
Thanks so much for this test. You previously said you were going to test it and you did! Thanks for the actual test as I don't think my wife would be quite as accepting of the glass on the floor as yours was!!! I have the same experience with Alexa Guard sounds. It just doesn't work very well and I have Echoes throughout my house.
Its been 25 days since war came to Ukraine. Every day civil people and children die under missile attacks. At the same time American companies like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Citibank continue their operations in russia sponsoring the war and making money on the blood of innocent Ukrainians. Help us convince them to wind down any operations in Russia. Stop paying taxes and sponsor their army! Speak up, contact your authorities, refer to your politicians, convince them to give Ukraine full military support and increase economic blockade for russia. Help Ukraine defend themselves.
Alexa guard always alerted me whenever I watched a show/movie that had a scene where glass was broken. Wonder if the sensors can differentiate between that and real glass.
Probably not. If I was in the other room and a glass breaking sound went off on the TV, I doubt I'd be able to differentiate as well if I didn't know the TV was on.
May I ask if the alarm sound at the back is from the Ring glass break sensor? Or from a base station? My point is whether I need to buy a ring base station to make the alarm sound.
@@LifeHackster thx. However, it looks like ring base station is not sold alone from Ring. I just checked that the alternatively solution is to buy Ring Outdoor Siren and connect the glass break senor to Siren.
Thank you for this test video. I am so happy with my ring alarm system, and had seen that the glass sensor had finally came out. But I had been waiting for just this review before I bought it. Looks like it is going to work well.
Not really practical because you shouldn’t be turning on this sensor when everybody in the house is still awake..watching TV..etc…it should only be turned on when the house is quiet and everybody is asleep or away from the house.
I am currently upgrading to the ring system my former system hardwired and everything one night the toilet seat slipped out of my hand and slam down shut next to you know the alarm is screaming away quite a rude awakening around 2 AM humanoid are already up to go to the bathroom
Have you tested edge yet? I tried it and all recorded videos were useless. Basically 1 frame every 5 seconds and stating weak signal. Mind you I have the ring pro base station 3 eero pros and 2 beacons. All my cameras have great connections and when videos saved to the cloud have perfect quality. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this.
I’ve been noticing this too. I switched to cloud recordings for now and I thought it was my SD card. I have been noticing choppiness on my first 1-2 seconds of the video, poor connection and also occasionally missing pre-recordings..I’ll be making a video on this. Thanks for clarifying that it is not my SD card.
Shout-out to lifehackster for getting a whole window and frame just to break for a video. In the next test I would like to see when your wife throws "pots and pans" at you, if it does trigger the sensor 😆😆.
You could have use some metal forks/spoons and throw them on the floor and that will mimic the glass break sound. It happed to me by accident and it triggered the Ring Glass Break Sensors when they were in Home Mode.,In fact, it triggered 3 Glass Break Sensors the the forks/spoons fell on the flor which is good.
It will trigger it..that is why I only turn it on during home and away modes…we are mostly asleep in home mode and disarm the alarm first thing when we wake up in the morning.
How about Ring makes a sensor that recognizes glass being attempted to break, like it vibrating hard, for preventative break-ins. The sensor lights up bright red and flashes to warn the person, maybe it triggers the siren outside on the cameras.
