Rest in peace, Val... Your life brought so many evocations of a gentler more innocent age in our own lives, & in humanity, now sadly gone forever. Your beautiful singing of this piece at the closing credits of this quiet little British film, creates perhaps one of the most evocative & life affirming moments in cinema. A moment, as other commentors have attested, which will remain softly in our memories all our lives.. I remember seeing the film on its release as a young teenager.. Then again ten years ago in my mid 40's, when the greater understanding of what is really important in life brought a tear to my eye. If I never see the film again, it will only be because I don't need to.. the sentiment remains because of your song..
In spite of the brutal demise of Midge, the movie actually had a very positive ending, when Midge's offspring where seen with his mate, 1 of the otters went for a swim in a pool, the light of the sun reflected back, giving a beautiful lighting effect of a ring of bright water, the movie ends there, but Midge's legacy lives on, thats the moral of the story.
I remember seeing this film in the cinema when it first came out...great film, but the song and singer made the film worth watching over many times...Val was a fantastic singer...have many of his cd,s...his tv shows were fabulous...Remembered by one of his fellow countrymen always with fondness. R Clarke
Darling Midge and all the fabulous good that Virginia M. and her darling husband Bill Travers did for wildlife...indigenouse to Scotland not to mention their commitment to lions and born free. I thank you... We are forever in your debt...Bisous for ever...T. xx Loire Valley You made my childhood more meaningful through the films and the messages....
Though I saw this film at the library as a child of 8 years old, it has never left me. I remember feeling love and then great loss and sadness at the end of the movie. I’m moved to know I can now watch it again.
This was the backtrack as I remember it, with my vocal, that was given to Val so he could listen to the song before recording it for the picture "Ring of bright water" directed by Julian Strick if I remember it correctly. Doonicans later version (also here on RU-vid) is much better.. Lovely arrangement for orchestra .. beautiful strings. Takes me back 50 years to when I was a struggling cabaret act doing the working men's clubs and occasional radio and tv slots. Des O'Connor and Val Doonican were my heroes.
Wow I've just read this! Got to say that is a heck of a beautiful track to have been involved with. What are you doing these days..still singing I hope!

This movie can be ordered fromAmazon for1.99 This is one of the reasons we still believe in life and love....I'm so happy that everyone who sees this movie remembers their inner love.
Love the movie , although ending is very sad. Love the song at the ending of movie , the words , the voice , the music, the Spanish guitar the “rolling” sound of the guitar, then the Spanish guitar again, just love it! I really relate to this song, the words, just listen to them, listen to his voice , listen to the music it’s self. Watch the movie, it’s very nice, be prepared for tears at the end, along with the song that follows
I saw "Ring of bright water" on the television in 1976. I am 49 years old now. There are many people who love this movie also in Japan. The woman is singing at the end of the movie. It will get into the news in 35 years on the Internet. There are two books on a Japanese translation. I'm sorry for my poor English.
Based on a true story ...Gavin Maxwell wrote the book about his life at “ Camusfeàrna “ ...the film was tastefully done but not true to the real events, though Mijbil was cruelly killed , this devastated the author . ROBW is mainly about Mijbils successor Edal the otter who also met a tragic end in a fire that destroyed Maxwell’s home
another classic british movie with a hunting theme is the belstone fox.....never been quite sure if the movie is pro or anti hunting but it has a beautiful theme composed by laurie johnson which i have just uploaded on my youtube.....hope people enjoy it!
That’s interesting, never would have thought that, and “back in the day “ , I was at the concert, Day On The Green, in San Francisco, Kezar Stadium, where one of my favorite group played, LED ZEPPELIN, don’t remember the year , was still in high school, and well u-no, but if that’ll be a true thing you heard , I say , wow! Hey check out another gem to my ears, heart and soul. It’s on UTUBE, HAYDE, ( group name). song name, WAYFARING STRANGER, ooo boy , gets me right here 💘, 🤘🏾
No, of course nobody is planning to reintroduce otter hunting - otters are a protected species and policy is to try and boost the population, not control it. Fox-hunting on the other hand is a much more complicated issue.
