Deer, elk, caribou, and moose shed antlers because it’s too cumbersome and dangerous to have them all year when they are primarily for mating and fighting; female reindeer have antlers too and keep them longer to dig out lichen from the show. Antlers are defined by being shed like this. Horns, like those on antelope, goats, and rams are permanent. Pronghorn shed the outer layer of their horns.

Quite an informative reply section, I shall add; however my information is life saving and dire: Jesus Christ is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. They that believeth and are baptized (with the Holy Spirit) shall be saved; but they that believeth not shall be damned. Those led by the Holy Spirit do not abide in wickedness. *God is ONE manifesting himself as THREE;* the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! *For these three are one.* As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him. Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. They know not God, read his word, and their religion is in vain. Do not hear them, they will mislead you, the lost cannot guide the lost.

Nope I’ve gotten collected deer antlers from the woods over the years as an altar tool, I love them. I’ve never seen a moose just pop them off on someone’s driveway like this though, must be northern Canada or Alaska, you don’t see that from the moose around where I live as they generally avoid hunters so avoid humans by proxy. Even deer generally don’t shed outside of the woods very often.

My dad was a hunter education instructor, so I got to learn all about things like this. Deer shed their antlers after the mating season in the fall, which is when their hormones are through the roof. That testosterone helps to keep the bone tissue in the antlers sturdy enough to fight other males. After mating season, their testosterone lowers and causes the tissue to become brittle. Climate, daylight, diet, age, and injury can also control how early bucks or male moose shed their antlers. I don't remember all the scientific terms, but it has something to do with calcium deteriorating near the point where the antlers meet the head. Obviously, that fragile point bears the most weight, so the whole antler breaks off at that area fairly easily.
