The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an American fantasy television series based on the novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices by J. R. R. Tolkien. Developed by showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming service Prime Video, the series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Galadriel in LOTR was powerful, but in a soft power way. Soft power isn't weak, it just means power that doesn't involve beating someone to a pulp. That's what makes soft power so awesome, you don't expect this relatively harmless looking person to be so dangerous. This fair looking, soft spoken queen was the only one who could drive Sauron from Dol Guldur and banish him to Mordor. That's impressive, far more than beating up 5 men in amour who towered over her, or dispatching an ice troll without even breaking a sweat. The Galadriel in ROP is not at all the same character in LOTR. But, Amazon doesn't care, they have a message to send and apparently didn't think writers were a type of employee to spend any money on.

Galadriel managing to shove four Numenorean guards into her cell (without even using any magic at all, by the look of it) and then make her way to the King's Bedchamber - without being detected by anyone on the way - really was jaw-dropping.

The thing is, Galadriel's revenge quest just doesn't make sense in Tolkien's world because of the way elf "death" works there. Her brother isn't gone forever; he'll get a new body eventually and she can see him again. Heck, he could easily have been waiting her in Valinor, but she never bothered to find out. That destroys all basis for her character. (And it would make suicide really pointless for her 29:40, because she would just end up ... in Valinor ... where she is already going!)

The writers and producers had no idea about Tolkien's writings and what characters like Galadriel represent. They only wanted to publish their WOKE agenda. Had they focus on Tolkien, they would have had a success larger than GOT, but they decided to go WOKE, thus they went broke, investing almost a billion on rubbish. That the show failed is not surprise. There are loads of strong women in Tolkien and they simply decided to overlook them: Melian, Arwen, Luthien, Idril Celebrindal, etc. The writers could have narrated their stories and sell, through those stories, their point of view that women are empowered. But no. They had to do it their way. I'm glad they failed.

@fantasywind3923 Год назад
I would say that the whole thing needs to be rewritten for it to make sense, instead of having her send off to Valinor, basically have Gil-galad send her as emissary to Numenor in the first place! The lore about the passage to Valinor also would remain intact (because in Second Age there was no magic portal thing that led to it, it was a physical location one just could sail to, other land) and then they still could have the whole thing with sea serpent and all that, elven ships can wreck and drown too say in a storm, because this ship wouldn't be the special one build for Valinor voyage, also if this was closer to shores of Middle-earth it would make more sense to see that raft: "The year was waning to autumn, and before long great winds were to be expected, hostile and dangerous, even to Elven-ships while they were still near to Middle-earth. But so great was the grief of Amroth that nonetheless they stayed their going for many weeks; and they lived on the ship, for their houses on the shore were stripped and empty. Then in the autumn there came a great night of storm, one of fiercest in the annals of Gondor. It came from the cold Northern Waste, and roared down through Eriador into the lands of Gondor, doing great havoc; the White Mountains were no shield against it, and many of the ships of Men were swept out into the Bay of Belfalas and lost. The light Elven-ship was torn from its moorings and driven into the wild waters towards the coasts of Umbar. No tidings of it were ever heard in Middle-earth; but the Elven-ships made for this journey did not founder, and doubtless it left the Circles of the World and came at last to Eressëa. But it did not bring Amroth thither. The storm fell upon the coasts of Gondor just as dawn was peering through the flying clouds; but when Amroth woke the ship was already far from land. Crying aloud in despair Nimrodel! he leapt into the sea and swam towards the fading shore. The mariners with their Elvish sight for a long time could see him battling with the waves, until the rising sun gleamed through the clouds and far off lit his bright hair like a spark of gold. No eyes of Elves or Men ever saw him again in Middle-earth." Amroth drowning is the most famous case. The Numenoreans and their relation with elves is much more complex and requires a wholly different set up to explain to casual audience! It's all aboute envy, fear of death and desire of deathlessness, the Numenoreans at first were great friends with Elves, but started to resent them due to their immortality and being jelous of it, then also comes the religious aspect, the Valar and so on. A lot of lore that simply got squandered in the show for the modernized take of "elf taking our trades" and other such bullshit!

The plane quickly disappeared from view as he hit the deck and crawled into the tall grass in an effort not to be spotted by the pilot, who had no doubt been briefed to look for a single man lurking in the shadows on the ground below. In the books, elves are described as being rather emotional. Let me quote what Samwise said - _"They are quite different from what I expected... so gay and sad, as it were."_ Obvious "ha-ha, he said gay" aside (remember when LotR was written) gay in this context means jolly, happy, in a good mood - and sad. Elves are meant to be quite emotional, the more stoic depiction in the Peter Jackson movies is a modern interpretation. We consider stoic characters competent, strong, respectable, and that is the role the elves were meant to have in the books. One role they were never meant to have was incompetent soyboy losers though, that is Amazon original.

No no. You don't understand the absurdity of having black elves (I don't think dark/moon elves exist within the Tolkien universe so there isn't even a historical nor geographical reason for there to be any). But, when you race-swap an elf, in the context of a fantasy world, that would typically mean turning them into a human, dwarf, hobbit, or something that's not an elf. Skin colour does not define your race, your race defines your skin tones. Elves can't be black because in Tolkien's universe there is only one ethnic group of elves. Humans can range from white to black because there can be multiple ethnic groups of humans and because they live everywhere. Dwarves really got no reason to be dark-skinned considering that they live mainly in underground cities. I guess hobbits can also have multiple ranges of skin tone as well, but considering that most hobbits live in pretty mild and near perfect climates....probably not. My point is that only humans have a need to develop different colored skin-tones, the other races don't because they are all clump up together within the same climate range. An while I'm at it.....where are my fucking black orcs? If you're gonna make black elves, black hobbits, and black dwarves, where are the black orcs? I sense some subtle racism here.

Amazon’s ‘The Rings of Power’ is TV for people with 90% of their attention on their phone. The writing is baffling. And no, not in the way a good thriller or detective drama can have you scratching your head. No, it’s the incongruity of the show’s amateurishness, weighed against its reportedly record-holding budget that leaves me perplexed. That is, until you consider who Amazon has likely intended this for. Four episodes in, I can only assume this is a show for the chronically phone-addicted, the ‘have it on in the background with dinner’ types; in short, those who aren’t going to pay attention long enough to realise the dialogue, while metrically pretty, is as thin as Galadriel’s water-logged dress, as she sets off front-crawling across the Atlantic. At first, such lines as ‘a rock sinks because it looks down, while boats look up’, and this week’s zinger ‘there is no secret worth hiding with deception’, had me wondering if Jeff Bezos’s children were hired to write them. Scenes where intrepid groups of elves butchered snow trolls, for the apparent crime of existing in their natural habitat, forced me to ask ‘could we not have had something resembling a… point, to all this?’ It finally hit me however, that Amazon’s new flagship fantasy series doesn’t need to try harder than that, since all you need to convince an intended audience of compulsive social-media scrollers, is the occasional, context-less clash of swords, some wirework, and an overenthusiastic blare of brass from composer ‘Bear McCreary’, to draw the eye from handheld screen to wall-mounted, just long enough to draw a muttered ‘huh, that’s cool I guess…’ Not a show for me overall then. And that’s fine. Prime’s free trial has seen me through these first few episodes none the poorer (monetarily, if a little lacking in brain cells). At day’s end, PJ’s films are still masterpieces, and also available on NOW TV or HBO Max. I just hope Amazon don’t regret driving all their could-have-been fans onto a rival streaming platform. But hey, that’s the billion-dollar risk they took.

Regarding the smith job: One of the few things I remember of the Silmarillion was that Sauron was genuine in his desire to turn over a new leaf right up until the Elves were like "Since you haven't done anything bad for so long, you get to be judged by the king to see if you deserve to have us discuss the possibility of your shot at redemption" to which he was more than a little miffed, and that was what turned him back to the darkness. It's entirely possible that he was genuinely wanting the smithing job.

My opinion is that this show is 100 percent woke, they're turning Numenor into an "allegory" (which Tolkeen hated) about immigration where the elves are Mexicans. It's sad and pathetic since the real reason the Numenorians were jealous of the elves was they envied their immortality. Leaving that aside, though, the much bigger problem this show has is the shitty writing. These two showrunners can't write their way out of a paper bag.

Special mentions to (1) Galadriel jumping off the boat just before arriving at Valinor and planning to swim back all the ocean (whaaaat???) and (2) So the mark ended up being a map. That means Sauron killed Galadriel's brother and took his time to carve in his skin a map of where his forces are hiding and recovering after Morgoth's defeat. Wow. Sounds like a great idea. The "You Have Moxy, I won't kill you" trope, is perhaps the biggest red flag in storytelling, i.e. We Need the plot to happen, but we don't actually know how to get MC to the next location. This Dead End problem can be solved in a lot of ways, but the telling point is that the Female Lead or Main Character, because you can't have Male Main Leads anymore... is extremely limited in their ability to have normal interactions with people. They can't be morally grey or have casual relationships. So they are very, very limited in the ways in which people can talk to them, or come up to interact. It either has to be proactive/defensive, or surreptitious, i.e. not through conversation or character. And that visual method has to be so obvious that it's a detriment to the flow of the story, so that people step out of the fantasy to notice there's a problem, i.e. a White Flag of Giving Up e.g. Putting the map of a Base/Meeting point, into a symbol or sword. And then abandoning or pretending to hide that stronghold ... for reasons. We also don't want this coming back to bite the plot, i.e. this sudden introduction of a NEW character, we need something convenient. Almost Transported in just to change the MC's Fate/Direction in events. We could add a Clue, but then we'd have to give the character enough depth to figure it out. We could let the villain/target escape and follow them back, but we'd have to make our MC devious. Sure, it can be excused in a lot of ways, but that's kind of the point. The other character has to be motivated to let the shenanigans continue or it seems very out of place. e.g. I've been sent to kill you, but I somehow like you and wish to give you the next step in your journey by telling you about my employer, or where the next scene is going to take place. The Butler gives them a map and a key, etc.

State-run business is socialism; and the reason many of these current monopolies exist is because they're kept afloat by government subsidies, they don't play by the same rules as totally privatized businesses do in a _truly_ free market. They aren't allowed to fail. It's easy to compete when you're using the bottomless well of other people's tax dollars and the local mom 'n' pop instead has to operate fairly on the same level ground as every other private company. That's why there are almost never any repercussions.

The Wizards didn't arrive in Middle-Earth until the Third Age, this show is set in the second. We don't even know if the Hobbits had the 3 groupings Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides in the Second Age they're never mentioned in the context in the second age, which begs the question how are the Harfoots even allowed to be used?

I don’t think it much matters in this series. Galadriel never went to Numenor or met with Tar-Meriel 🤷‍♀️

The irony is finrod isnt dead at all. He's reincarnated in valinor. The exact place galadriel was heading to. Before she jumped ship

They shouldve done the elves escaping their destroyed kingdoms in the north, and Elrond growing into the badass demigod he is.

Have you actually read the books? He's not "badass". If nothing else Elrond is much closer to his portrayal in the books than Jackson's version.

25:00 Funny thing. I've already seen videos about the finale. Halbrand is Sauron. The whole he's the prince was actually a lie that Galadriel tried to believe. It's really funny So Gil Galad was right. Galadriel did help Sauron. She helped Sauron get to Middle Earth to make the 19 rings. But that's if they continue to make more rings.

I have a hunch not-Gandalf might actually be Radagast _might;_ that does require the writers having to have slightly more than passing familiarity with the source material

Either way they both belong in the third age thousands of years after these events.

Nope. The ominous dark shading of the weather and space behind his head when he’s getting upset is textbook Gandalf angry behavior.

Not a fan of how every video bagging this show has thumbnails of the cast. They're just actors trying to get a paycheck. Perhaps post pics of the writer's and director.

My biggest issue with this show, besides the writing, is that every scene looks like a film set or a cgi cluster-f@$& instead of of an actual living world

I agree, Tolkien shouldn't be changed, his ideas come from norse Anglo- Saxon mythologies so why it has to be diverse - no need. Tolkien created the world that doesn't exist - it's arleady diverse - Hobbits, Goblins etc.

@@hazeltree7738 But men and women arent equal. They should each do the job the other cant. There are things men are much better at than women and vice versa. The idea that enforced equality removes natural inequality is destroying societies. Natural adaptation did not spare the brain either.

They did that to antagonise the fans, in some pathetic attempt at retaliation, over their unfathomable belief that Tolkien created Orks to represent black people! The problem is, unlike this shows creators, and their sycophant followers, LOTR fans understand that Orks don't represent anything, but Orks! So there can be no offense taken!
