Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been released with episodes 1 and 2 on Amazon prime video. But the media embargo dropping didn't prepare anyone for the launch reviews, or the LOTR hype that they were determined to push. With the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Weekly disagreeing, alongside various actor interviews like Morfydd Clark as Galadriel coming forwards. Can Rings of Power impress the fans enough to continue its 5 season run profitably?

I watched 'Return of The King' last night and saw Eowyn run the gamut from gentle, feminine and elegant to utterly badass. She was clearly terrified to go into battle (as any sane person would be) but was determined to fight - which is what true bravery is I think - and ended up killing the Nazgul Witch King. She's a great character, who I appreciate all the more after this two dimensional cardboard cut version of Galadriel.

@legatedrengr
@legatedrengr Год назад
@@thomasmuandersontheneousul4184 Tolkien wouldn't have liked PJ'S adaptation, its true - pretty sure even Christopher said it was a poor reflection of his father's work. However, as an adaptation that brought Middle Earth to the big screen and millions more people, it was and still is incredible, and the people behind it changed as little as they could whilst still making it a compelling and coherent film trilogy. Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights needed to go because it would have killed pacing and tension. Glorfindel was replaced with Arwyn to add weight to her's and Aragorn's relationship, as well as keep the tension up since Glorfindel is an absolute beast. Haldir and the elves were added to Helm's Deep, again for tension maintenance reasons and as a nod to the themes of cooperation and solidarity being essential in overcoming evil. Eomer replaced Erkenbrand for plot coherency reasons. And finally the Scourging of the Shire was cut because it would have added an extra hour to the film and been somewhat anticlimactic after the defeat of Sauron. Considering the source material, the PJ films are some of the best book adaptations ever brought to screen, in terms of faithfulness and quality. Not perfect, but damn close to it. Rings of Power didn't even try to respect what little source material they had access to, changing everything they could in order to tell their own story and inject their own messages instead of keeping JRRT's. Also, Disparu isn't racist just because he points out glaring flaws in plot, character and general production studio fuckery

We were actually supposed to buy into the idea that this catastrophe of a show was the real example of 'empowerment'??? In the film trilogy, we have Arwen, introduced with a sword in her hand, volunteering to take heroic action, and looking nothing less than fierce all the while. We have Eowyn, devoted to Rohan and her King. Determined to fight, and doing so impressively. Up to and including the defeat of Sauron's greatest commander. And finally there is the real Galadriel. Barring celestial beings, the most powerful person in all of Middle-Earth. In letter 348 Tolkien states that in Sindarin “Galadriel” means “maiden crowned with gleaming hair” and that the name was a secondary one given to her in her youth when she was then of ‘Amazonian disposition’ and ‘ bound up her hair in a crown when taking part in athletic feats’. Tolkien elsewhere noted that Galadriel was unusually tall and possessed of a proud nature. So the “Amazon” part may not have the warrior meaning that some would impart. It could of course. But it could also just mean that Galadriel was a strong willed young female elf who enjoyed physical exercise in the first age. In the start of the second she was already 1500 or 5000 years old married to Celeborn and living in Lindon.

@@Jim-Tuner I have no issue with the unknowns. Despite what people say and who they now know of; the Peter Jackson films were cast with a bunch of unknowns at the time. Remember, Ian McKellan was the 'big name'. Viggo hadn't done anything Hollywood-wise (and wasn't even cast initially), neither had Hugo Weaving nor Karl Urban and Liv Tyler wasn't even an actress really... Blanchett was sort of known for Elizabeth, Sean Bean for always dying, Christopher Lee hadn't been in much in years, despite his Hammer 70's heyday, similarly Iain Holm. There wasn't a lot of star power attached to the casting in 1998/99. LOTR, X-Men, Iron Man, Apocalypse Now, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, Buffy, do go to show that a cast of well-coordinated good yet mainly unknown actors, can elevate a production way above one of 'stars' and 'names'. Nothing wrong with casting a buch of complete unknowns, even in a major production, film or TV show; what matters is the acting ability, direction and script. This show has none of those.

Jesus, this article. As a bit of a writer myself, I will straight up say you can make any character you want into your hero, but they need to fill three conditions at minimum: 1. Be logical. A female fighter is easy enough to justify if she has proper background and history with the training and such. But if they randomly pick up a sword they've never touched before and defeat a man with years of experience, you're doing it wrong. I've written a story in which one of the main heroes was a sorceress capable of annihilating entire armies or cities with a few words, but she had a lifetime of work behind her to achieve that kind of power, as well as the will to NOT use it, which was an important part of her character itself. 2. Be entertaining. A one note personality with no expression or variation gets boring quickly, man or woman. They have to be someone people actually WANT to follow the story of, either through a relatable event/tragedy or just being that much fun. And that leads to 3. Be likable. A hero character needs to make the audience like them, so the audience actually wants them to succeed. This is by far the most important part of a fictional hero, man or woman, because if they're a complete jerk the whole time they're around, people aren't going to stick around to see how it turns out. There is a possibility of making them a likeable jerk, but that's a tightrope to walk, because the jerk and likable behaviors have to be carefully balanced.

Lady Galadriel, daughter of Finarfin, grand-daughter of Finwë (one of the original elves created by Illuvatar and the first High King of the Noldor), probably one of the only living beings in Middle Earth that was born in Valinor during the Age of the Trees: she looks like a random unknown human warrior girl, fighting trolls to revenge her brother's death, Finrod (who is actually resurrected and waiting for her, drinking mojitos in Valinor). Also Elrond, twin brother of Elros "Tar-Minyatur" (first King of Numenor), son of Earendil (a Star in the sky!), grand-grand-son of Turgon (King of Gondolin), grand-grand-son of Beren and Luthien, grand-grand-gran-son of Elwë "Thingol" (original elf created by Illuvatar and King of the Sindar) and Melian the Maïa: an amateur "politician"/architect, barely allowed to attend Gil-galad's meetings. Gil-galad, son of Fingon, grand-son of Fingolfin and grand-grand-son of Finwë, therefore Galadriel's nephew twice removed: looks much older, looks dumb, but still addresses Galadriel like a random warrior (which she actually is in the show), never seen Valinor and still indirectly under the Ban of the Valar, but can decide to send random elves there. Celebrimbor, grand-son of Fëanor, grand-grand-son of Finwë: looks like an old grubby politician, left at the door of Khazad Dum like a tramp.

Tolkien understood this the most. the showrunners don't. every character in the legendarium represents something, for example Gollum is representation of self pity and depression. Sauron is FEAR and Galadriel as I mentioned is the embodiment of grace. and this representations of values and plagues of human life and psyche, forms the root structure of all of the Tolkien's story. we love it because of them, because we recognize our own grace when we see Galadriel or our own hopefulness when Samwise can find a star in the darkness of Mordor or in the ring and the burden that we all have in our lives. this representations are all part of a whole, together they form the soul and essence of what we call the Lord of The Rings. this is why we love it so much, because it represents our psychology, humanity and life. and it is ageless, colorless and genderless, because it wants to represents us as human beings not a mere identity. you cannot change them. Tolkien himself could not change them. it does not matter if you own a house, if you remove a break from its foundation it will crumble. and amazon just removed many. and this rule is true for any art whether it is a symphony or a book or a painting." I beg you, please point out what here I say that is wrong for I believe what I believe based on this reasonings and if you can logically prove them wrong, then by all means I shall change my mind.

"Rocks and boats have feelings" -Galadriel's brother
@Mr.Batsu12

Deranged is how I describe Galadriel. Many times when people are talking to her you can see she's seething with anger. The scene with Elrond where the famous "You have not seen what I have seen" line is from shows her going mental. She's shaking, twitching and her eyes are bulging at times. You can see the tops of her iris many times in that scene. Normal people have the tops of their iris covered by their upper eyelid. Her facial twitches and shaking make her appear totally insane. Is this bad acting? Bad directing? Both? Or just that the actress is really an unhinged far left weirdo? It's very possible it could be all of the above.

@@talesofgore9424 Wow, is that true? The actress did say she needed therapy after doing the fight scenes. “I would flinch a lot when people came at me. So they did exposure therapy with me, where I would have all these huge, huge men running at me, screaming with swords. To stop me from looking frightened. Because I’ve definitely been cast as the victim. And Galadriel is not that.”

Guyladriel defenders point to Tolkien's choice of word "fight" in several passage about Galadriel, but of course they conveniently forgot being an Elven Noble, Guyladriel should have a named Sword, not just any ordinary sword. 😆
@kaizokujimbei143
@kaizokujimbei143 Год назад
They bring up a passage from Unfinished Tales about how Galadriel "fought" fiercely to defend her kin the Teleri at Alqualonde. That passage is the SINGULAR instance that the word "fight" is ever used by Tolkien in relation Galadriel's actions. And from that they construct the lie that she is warrior..... somehow.
@HerculesBallsInc
@HerculesBallsInc Год назад
I always ask them, "So... is there only one way to fight? Does literally every soldier grab a sword and charge the enemy? No? So why do you think Galadriel does?" Other passages point out that Galadriel looked at dwarves with 'the eye of a commander' and many times that she wanted to rule her own land. THAT is the kind of fighter she very obviously was: a strategist and leader of troops, not the guy swinging the sword.

"Stolen Valor" is a term applied to the phenomenon of people falsely claiming military awards or medals they did not earn, service they did not perform, Prisoner of War experiences that never happened, and other tales of military actions that exist only in their minds. To buy rights to a book for the sole purpose of adapting to screen, and then not including one thing from the book in the screen adaption is not only Stolen Valor, but gaslighting. Not one thing from the appendix Rings of Power made it to the films. Not one. Ungoliant killing the trees, kinslaying, flight of the Noldor, death of Morgoth, Gladriel leading her kingdom with Celeborn, Elrond finally being born and marring her daughter... nothing. Literally nothing that is in the book made it to screen. Never ever thought anything would destroy a franchise more than Earthsea. 😡
