I fully understand the mating ritual of the cassowary. According to evolutionary theory, a male wants to mate with as many females as possible to increase the success of his bloodline, but females? They’re very picky because they want a strong healthy mate that can provide for her and their offspring. And both of those are vital for cassowaries because it’s the father who incubates and parents the chicks. That fight in this video may seem like a spat or rejection, but when you take that all to mind, in truth, the female is strategically testing out the male, to make sure he has what it takes to be a suitable father and mate. Being strong and healthy fighter tells her that he’s a good provider and is capable of defending himself and others against rivals and predators. All things essential for a male cassowary who’s an excellent mate.

Everything is simpler - the male was trying to protect the eggs. Cassowaries have completely perverted parental behavior; males take care of the eggs and chicks; the female can easily trample her own offspring. In mammals, as a rule, the opposite is true.
