@@APREACTS I'm so grateful I got to meet him twice. Once when I was just 14, 2005 they had a signature session in my town before playing a show which I couldn't attend cos it was not allowed for people under 18. I saw him again ten years later in a bar in Helsinki and got to shake his hand and tell him how much his music meant to me. He had the patience to listen to my drunken ramblings and I was absolutely shit faced. I can still remember that particular moment clear as a day though, he was smiling and basically just saying "cool story bro". I realize he must get this just about everywhere he walks and is always bothered by some drunken metalhead so the first thing I said to him was something like "I apologize for bothering you dude", but he was all cool and none of that rockstar bullshit that you'd expect from someone in his position. I'm gutted at the loss. I've never felt the musician/celebrity sadness before Alexi. Bodom was my first taste into this world of melo-death, and I haven't looked back. I can still remember when Mask of Sanity came over the speakers, the first Bodom song I had ever heard. Bodom really shaped who i was to become and what interests I had as a Teen. He inspired me to pick up the guitar, I saved for months to be able to get a signature scythe. While my guitar playing has fallen off the face of the word, i will not sell that guitar. I ran through the COB discography yesterday, I haven't listened as much in the last 3 years or so. Whether it's my maturity growth, or the knowledge that he wont be writing anything new, I appreciate so many more of the songs than I used to over 2 decades or so. I woke up today, a day after news broke, and it was the first thought to my mind.. he had a more profound impact than I originally knew. COB Hate Crew Forever RIP Alexi. You gave so much, to so many.

I had a Talk Boy and recorded about a minute of the song on it and just listened to it non-stop all night. Then the first time they toured the US in '03 and the whole crowd chanted BODOM BODOMBODOM even before Dimmu who was the headliner. Plenty of amazing Bodom related memories over the years. RIP

I woke up to receive a message from my best friend of his passing. I discovered Alexi and COB in 2005 as a junior in high school. I had the distinct and unique pleasure of enjoying 6 live shows. One of which included a meet and greet where I got to meet him and all of the rest of the band except for Jaska who actually was at a nearby hospital prior to the show which was a little delayed. My last concert I caught one of 3 water bottles thrown by Alexi to the crowd and was one of two people Henkka gave a fist bump to. I can't even describe what their music means to me. Countless hours of listening to them while at the gym, long trips in the car and even studying. I have sat here for a fair share of today in complete disbelief. Long live my idol, Alexi.

My Alexi memory: The Bataclan shootings just happened, and i was supposed to see Children of Bodom and Lamb of God days after in Tilburg. So i'm outside waiting in the front of the line and the venue manager comes out with the message the show is canceled. It was a half hour before doors would open. So i'm fucking pissed, because Lamb of God chickend out of the show because a guy took a picture of the venue in the afternoon. They just did some construction, and they changed the front sight of the building. Children of Bodom still wanted to play, but the tourmanager called it off. Children of Bodom decided to come back 2 weeks later to do a show without the other bands ❤ So 2 weeks later i'm back, and standing front row. Out comes the band and Alexi is wearing a big sweater and a scarf. He said: "i'm actually really sick, but this show can not be canceled twice, so let's do this!" It was a great show! That's the kind of guy he was. He was the defenition of metal. He also inspired me in my own music a lot. He will be missed immensly. R.i.p. Alexi Thanks for reading 🤘🏻

Alexi was real inspiration for many guitarists. I wasn't into that type of music when my brother introduced COB for me, but oh man, how I loved his creativity. And he was still a kid back then. Hatebreeder was just published, and even that I hated those vocals, I just listened that album repeatedly over and over again, because as a guitarist myself, I couldn't get enough of those incredible solos and leads. I never got into that level myself, but I always loved to listen to his work (including side projects like Sinergy and Kylähullut), and he is the reason, I started to tolerate that kind of harsh vocals too. I'm glad I saw Children of Bodom live in Wacken 2014. It was one of the best shows of the festival and I had a blast standing in the 2nd row! Alexi was a machine! I wish I could've seen more COB concerts but I never had the time when they were in my area or I simply didn't have the money to buy a ticket because I was still a student back then. When I found out, I felt winded, it was one of those moments when it felt like the entire country paused for a bit, like _everyone_ I knew mentioned it at least once. I then proceeded to listen through CoB's entire discography on one sitting. And I also witnessed how for a few hours Children of Bodom rose to the top 20 currently most listened to artists on Last.fm, going past artists like Eminem and Lady Gaga. I feel like that might have gotten a laugh out of him. Metal will never be the same without him, rest in peace, Alexi.

The first time I saw Children of Bodom was at Ilosaarirock, Finland, I think it was '96 or '97 when I was a teenager. They had just released "Something Wild" and were not that big yet. They played at the smallest venue of the festival, in a bowling alley. There were maybe 50 people in the audience. After that, I've seen COB a number of times. Including Alexi playing in The Local Band. Last time I saw COB was in august 2019 at Kaisaniemi, Helsinki. Alexi's talent never ceases to amaze me. For me, he's an icon and an dictionary example of the Finnish Sisu. Because of how hard he practiced, how hard he wanted to be the very best. And how he became that. Rest in peace Alexi, I hoped that you would be the Keith Richards of the X-generation. Both the devil and god bows for you. Requiem in paceam.

I first got into C.O.B. at 14 back in 2007 as a teenager. My cousin who got me into Metal through them showed me trashed lost and strung out and I spent two days constantly playing it while doing things like errands unable to not listen to it. It gave me one of the greatest musical highs I’ve ever had and for years listened to all their songs and albums and got into other Finnish Metal mostly Melodic Death Metal and Folk Metal they really were in many ways my idols my first Metal band and gateway band into Metal itself as a 14 year old teen in 2007 in middle school. I idolized Alexi. And at 24 in 2017 in Kansas City got to meet Janne and was too nervous to say much to Alexi as he walked past me but he was busy and annoyed most likely tired and didn’t want to bother him but talking to Janne who came off the tour bus after the show saw me my Bodom shirt and beanie smiled and came right up super close to me and we must have talked over an hour it was a dream come true to get to meet one of the band members from my idol band that started it all and got me through many rough years. I studied for a few years listening to Bodom before finally getting my G.E.D., I learned some guitar with my former best friends and had many great times with them listening to Bodom, I listened to them and other metal bands when living in a bad area with negative people to help my mental health to cheer me up, I watched all their interviews even over the years, long story short many major life experiences I had Bodom was always there. I did many shots tonight to commemorate one of the greatest guitarists to have possibly ever lived may Alexi and Children of Bodom Rest In Peace.

Was obsessed with COB in early 2000s. Hatebreeder is one of the best records to have been ever written. Went to Wacken 2004 with 18 years to watch COB Live. Roope just joined the band, and they have played all the classics of that time. After 2005 lost the band out of sight due to the less pleasant Blooddrunk album. Was shocked when COB split up in 2019, but was really happy to see Bodom A.M. arise from the ashes. Was really pleasantly surprised by the live performance and the energy of Bodom A.M.. Still Alexi was one of the most important guitarists of our time and I think Nightwish and Children of Bodom did a lot for the scene especially to the Finish Metal scene. My thoughts - your words. I'm 42 too and I was exactly as shocked as you about his death. And also more shocked than by all the deaths of musicians of the last months or years. Don't know if it is just the age or that his music has accompanied me to this day. Or just the fact that I saw them live a few times (always a pleasure) and last time at Summer Breeze '17 from the front row (really hard to stay there from the first to the last song without breathing problems). I still remember the day when my buddy came to me and asked me if I know Children Of Bodom. That day changed my life in many ways. This brought me back from Punk to Metal. Not that I ever stopped listening to Metal I just did it not as intensive as I do since that special day. Not to mention that I probably would not play in a Metal Band now. This is really a big and sad loss. R.I.P.

I don't comment a lot on the internet. In fact this is probably my first comment on RU-vid. But I really feel exactly the same way. Especially the part about not remembering another artist's death hitting that hard. This is the first time I feel that way about a public figure's passing. Despite not being a mainstream figure, I think it's a testament to how much Alexi truly impacted a lot of people's lives. I still remember vividly the first day my buddy showed me a video of Children of Bodom (Bodom Beach Terror at Tuska Open Air 2003). It was in 2005, I was 12, and I was immediately hooked. There was something so unique about his playing and writing style that made his songs instantly recognizable. He was my first idol, COB was the first band I was obsessed with. They got me and countless others through the awkward and sometimes difficult years of middle school and high school. I know a lot of people complained about their music the last few albums, but even though my music tastes have become more eclectic, I still listened to and liked all their albums all the way through Hexed. Children of Bodom remains THE band that I go back to during hard times, even after not listening to them for years. Alexi was the Eddie Van Halen of anyone who was a teenage metalhead in the early 2000s. His passing reminded me of how much of an impact he had on me and how big of a hole it's going to leave.

Children Of Bodom was probably the first heavier metal band that I started to listen. I listened to Stratovarius and Nightwish and had maybe heard Mourning Palace from Dimmu Borgir on some metal compilation album (this was around 1998-99), but then my brother bought the Something Wild album from COB and I listened to it too when he blasted it from the stereo. I especially started to like them when Hatebreeder came out, it was my favorite album for a long time. My best memory is from those days when we used to blast COB from the stereo with my cousin and rocked out our floorball sticks, which were supposed to be our guitars (we were about 10 years old) :D I didn't listen that much Bodom after the first 3-4 albums apart from the last album Hexed, but from time to time I always came back to those early albums I still enjoy. So they were my gateway drug to death and black metal world. Thank you and rest in peace, Alexi Laiho.

I started playing guitar in 2016, I am a very pessimistic person and I always thought that I would never become a good guitarist. Alexi was my main motivation for not giving up and continuing to pursue my dreams. When I saw this news I felt as if something was going through my chest, it was an immense pain that I felt. CoB was one of my favorite bands, when they disbanded I was very sad since I could never see them live, but I still admired Alexi, every time I was close to giving up playing the guitar I imagined Alexi talking to me, telling me not to give up. R.I.P Wildchild, he will continue to live in our hearts \m/

I was lucky enough to see CoB live at Graspop in June 2019. It was absolutely the best and craziest fucking crowd I've ever had the pleasure of being part of. I was pretty much at the front, just one row of people before me. Which also happened to be the edge of the mosh pit. The pit started at the very first note of the show and didn't slow down until the very fucking end. I was barely involved in the pit myself, but I was absolutely soaked in sweat after the show mostly just from the dudes actually in the midst of the pit hitting me. Absolutely gutted to hear the news of his passing. A massive talent and a massive inspiration for my own playing. Rest In Power, Alexi. You may be gone, but you'll never be forgotten.

I really loved him , he was such an inspiration ! last time I saw them live was 2018 at Wacken , I told everyone we NEED to go to their concert , no matter who plays parallel to them , we need to go to COB !! and I have videos , fotos and the EXPERIENCE omg , the feeling of this concert , can't describe ! in 2020 I released the first single with my band , now in 2021 heard that news , was really devastated but I know , I'll always look back to COB with a smile . beginning of 2020 I tattooed bodom (cause it fits with COB and BAM) and now I'm so much more proud to wear this tattoo ! Alexi , thank you for teaching us what music can reach !!!!

Alexi was a true pioneer of melodic death metal, shredding vivaldi casually, being the frontman, singer, both rhythm and solo guitarist of children of bodom. orchestrated a band of 100 guitarists to compose a beautiful full set of music for the honor of finlands 100th anniversary. he was a hero of mine, not only did i fall in love for the "harder" metal stuff because of him and cob, i fell in love to the basics of music in general.

I remember COB guys from late 90's. I was st their gig at Evijärvi NS, Finland. I was WAAAY too early, no one was there. Exept these guys, just sitting at the bench in concert hall. I went to them and said hello, shaked hands with them, thanked them and walked away. Saw them playing few times over the years. Great band, great musicians 🤘

Very well said guys, he is immortalized in his music. I was at their show in 2005 in Philly with Trivium and Amon Amarth (one of my first concerts ever) still to this day after going to around 50 plus metal shows is among my top 5 shows and this was the start of my metal journey and I haven't looked back. So incredibly grateful for Alexi and this band and how he has influenced my guitar playing. RIP to one of the greats!

Born & raised in South America but my mom is Finnish and when I was 14 we moved to Finland (although Im in Phoenix now). We lived in Helsinki just a few blocks from the cultural center called Nosturi where COB had a rehearsal room before they rented a private property near the airport. Anyway, one day I was going to visit Nosturi (there was a lot of things going on, bands, all kinds of art stuff etc), I opened the door and heard someone was going down the stairs in a great hurry...it was Alexi. Wouldn't have wanted to bother him, but as a huge COB fan couldn't help it tho. I just said 'oh, hi Alexi, when will your new album come out'? This broke the ice and he started talking about the album, the tour they were facing etc. Didn't know him in person but still he also told me about other things outside of the band and music business (it kind of surprised me). He turned out to be the most kindest, polite, humble, a true gentleman who really was down to earth, never pretented to be a big shot like 'hey look at me, I'm a rock star"! No, outside the stage, he was like one of us. Now that I remember that encounter with him, tears welled up in my eyes and I feel pain in my heart 😥😥 Alexi, your impact as a musician as well as a person was absolutely enormous around the world. You touched the hearts of so many people. And that is why your legacy will live forever 💜💜 you will never be forgotten. With Love, Marisol A 💜💕💜

My memories with him are not just two concerts maybe even three seeing them but one in particular where I got to meet him and take a photo with him. I'm sure many others are with me in saying we drifted a bit from them in recent times but this has been a wake up call that has left us all devastated. On the bright side it has got me back playing alot more guitar and I love you guys saying how he is now immortal. Thank you.

Great words for one of greatest influencer in modern metal. Too bad, saw Bodom only couple of times, but was really expecting next summer, though Alexi seemed pretty bad a while ago, recordings from octobers gigs seemed and sounded really good, and he also seemed to be in best shape in long time. Amount of memories and tributes from friends, colleagues and fans is overwhelming, and really puts on perspective how much he and his music meant for so many people.

I saw that coming recently, but I didn’t think it would be coming that’s fast, exactly 5 days after their 3rd year of wedding anniversary. I’m big fan of Markuu Uula Aleksi Laiho from the Wild Child Legacy (inearthed, Sinergy, Killahullut, The Local Band, COBHC etc.) But hearing the news this morning broke my heart because for 20 years I’ve been listening to them and as far as Aleksi feels like a member of my family, even my mom cried when I told her.. this is how life is precious. I’m sending all the love to his family, his daughter, his wife Kelli Wright-laiho for this hard moment. Aleksi will live in our heart for ever. I am buying a Jackson (like the old times, he had) and I am looking forward starting to make a memorial Hommage from COB. Keep that in mind, I’ll let you know. He’s gone Into Valhalla with other gods and everytime ill drink an Heineken, it will be in his favour. Aleksi really follow the reaper that time but in the next life, he will be there and we will meet again. 🖤🎼💫🤘🏻

I saw Children Of Bodom on their North American tour in April, 2019 at the Westscott Theatre in Syracuse, New York . It was a meet and greet. I’m going to say it was the promoter came out and said the guys are going to be walking around to sign autographs but Alexi is going to be standing in this spot. It was very sad to see him in the state he was in because he looked so skinny and pale. He was the last to sign my poster. I told him how I have been wanting to go to Finland and he said that’s rad. I got my picture taken with the band but unfortunately it never got sent to me by the promoter who took our picture . R.I.P. Alexi. I hope you are at peace.

I used to hate harsh vocals. I randomly heard Children of Bodom from a game called Stepmania when I was recomended to try Needled 24/7. I fell in love with the musicianship. I still didn't like harsh vocals and I couldn't understand the words, but I understood the music and the skill. I got as many SM files for Stepmania of Children of Bodom that I could find. Eventually I got albums and I was listening to them every day in high school along with Dragonforce, Nightwish and Sonata Arctica. Those 4 bands formed the core bands that I listened to and still listen to. Alexi Laiho's skills and passion brought me into a world of music I never thought I would enter. He is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard. Hearing of his death hurt my heart. I felt like I was robbed. Like we were all robbed of someone so special. I've felt like crying all day and I feel an emptiness inside. I've never met him but i still feel so strongly about his death. He Was a large part of myself growing into an adult and showing me the beauty and power of music.

I found CoB after i learned to listen to death metal. It took some time lol. Im from Finland and my first death metal band that i really grew to like isnt even from Finland it was Amon Amarth. After i had started understand it more and more i started to love it. My musical taste has evolved so much from when i was 13 (in 2013). I started to listen to the finnish death metal bands. CoB was one of them. And i still cant believe that Alexi is gone. It just doesnt feel real. Well atleast i saw CoB live once in 2019 during a festival. I have been thinking about him the whole time yesterday. And probably will keep thinking about him today as well. Just imagine the music he would have made in the future with Bodom After Midnight. i hope they release the album that they recorded. Rest in peace Alexi

I saw Bodom live around 2000 with Iced Earth; COB is the best live band I've ever seen by miles and I've been to many shows. Goddamn did Alexi put on a great show, incredible. The first band shirt I got from my GF (now wife) was a Follow the Reaper shirt she paid way too much money to ship to me for my birthday across the country from overseas (those kinds of things weren't as readily available back then as they are now). I was really looking forward to what Bodom After Midnight was going to be, sad 2021 already, FML.

I discovered Children of Bodom in 2013, I went to a record store one day and spotted the Hate Crew Deathroll album cover, it just looked so cool and it's as if the album asked me to be picked up. I listened to it, and my life changed forever, Bodom became my favorite band ever. I listened to their whole discography countless times, learned nearly every song I could, I saw them live twice, once in 2014 where I met my hero and shook Alexi's hand and got his autograph and once on their final tour in 2019. There never has been a band that impacted me as much, this guitar god will never be matched. And like you said, he has achieved immortality through his music, he will live on forever... .\m/

Sixpounder got me through a pretty damn rough time in my life. I got to stand side stage for Bodom during their set at Bloodstock 2019 - it was the first and only time that I got to see them and Im honestly at a loss for words with all of this. I remember when I was 17 and we had a bunch of Japanese exchange students at school, one of them was sharing music tastes with me on their MP3 player and they played some Bodom - I went "OH C.O.B NICE!" and this exchange kid told me how he apparently learned to play guitar because of Alexi.
