I was dragged out by a rip current in the uk. And luckily saved by an Aussie tourist on a kayak. The calm bits on the beach between the big waves are the dangerous bits! That's where the water's going back out! Keep away from them - yet they look so safe. Watch relevant RU-vid vids and obey the life guards!
When I was a younger man, I spent much of my leisure time surfing New Zealand and eastern Australia's many beaches, bars, reefs and point breaks. We often used rips to our advantage, as they would take you invariably out the back. This is something that should only be tried If you are an experienced surfer and being a good swimmer certainly helps. I cannot stress strongly enough, to check your leg rope, its condition , and where it connects to your board. The Velcro wrap around your ankle doesn't seem to wear, (at least mine hadn't) but the stuff that the actual rope is made of, can and does age. Your board is your life preserver. I had my leg rope snap in big beach break conditions off from Broadbeach in Queensland. Fortunately I was able to use the conditions to my advantage, and through a combination of floating and getting pushed back in by the swells and waves, I was able, after a good 20 plus minutes, to get back onto terra firma. Man was I relieved! It is very important to conserve your energy, so you can give out a burst of power, and body surf when you can. There was nobody on the beach that winter's day a few years ago. I only had myself to rely on. The lessons I learnt that day were hard learnt, and I nearly paid the ultimate price. Also, these days, most wetsuits provide a measure of floatation assistance, and should be a consideration when buying one. I'm sure the steamer I was wearing that day helped me to float better, and just chill out, rather than freak out, and conserve my energy. Complacency can kill you. I had had my leg rope for years, and whatever the stuff is that they're made of, had become a victim of the elements, and wasn't a match for the big conditions that day. It had obviously weakened, but I had stupidly put off buying a new one for Ron. Later Ron. They're not that expensive that they shouldn't be replaced every year, or two at most. I hope this tale of caution serves to alert everyone that uses the ocean as their playground.
@@MichaelHughes-uw3fb Very good story. Wonderful that you lived to continue living and to share your story with folks who are not aware of such things that can happen. Someone who is a ocean enthusiasts who might be a avid surfer and my have a older board purchased second hand to toy around with there new hobby and by your story shedding lite on this ankle line that this person and others would take your advise and ultimately save a life. Good information.
If you get caught in a rip, holler and let someone know you're in one. Don't fight it, just start swimming sideways by sidestroke, stay calm, eventually you'll be out of the rip, then slowly work your way back to the beach.
Me to Unfortunately, a wave pushed me and my friends to the rip current and they where at a full panic so started to drown and some how one of them started pushing me into the water so i also started to panic and just held my breath, thankfully i am a pretty good swimmer and could hold my head underwater for a good minute or else im pretty sure i would have been a goner by the time the lofeguard came to our rescue
Feb 4 2018 pretty beach australia 39 yrs old brother drowned standing at knee deep level water...pulled in a rip current.u were saved..lucky...i miss my brother 7 mths have passed cant get over him gone.
@@urvashipatel5214 I had a family member pass recently too. I pray your able to be doing the best you can with what you where dealt with. The loss and pain never ever goes away,we as humans just have to try to make it here on earth day by day until we all unite with our loved ones for eternity.🙏
WEAR flotation devices in first place. True that is half the equation - the other dilemma is that while the rip can carry someone out to 1300 feet ... sharks are looking for a meal!
This is wrong, do not wave your arm in the air...people will think you are waving to family....and no concern. Just put your hand/arm straight up in the air...do not wave it.
