South Africans are divided over the role FW de Klerk played in the democratisation of the country. Some will remember him as a hero, others as the last President of the brutal apartheid government which killed many black South Africans. De Klerk was a Deputy President in the Government of National Unity post the 1994 election. He passed away peacefully at his home in Fresnaye, Cape Town earlier this morning, following a struggle with cancer.
