Remembering George Harrison. Was he a master guitarist or just meh? This video answers that question with examples of George's guitar parts and sonic innovations from classic Beatles songs.
Spoiler: I learned so much about musicianship, exotic sounds and how to "orchestrate" guitar parts from George Harrison, and he has a lot to teach you, too.
Discover my most important "Lessons from George" as I play snippets from some of his most interesting and intricate 6 and 12-String electric, acoustic guitar and slide guitar parts, along with sitar, harmonium and swarmandal. Learn how his Beatles-era songwriting was both similar and different to John and Paul's.
Includes examples from And I Love Her, I Feel Fine, Nowhere Man, Paperback Writer, If I Needed Someone, Norwegian Wood, Love You Too, Within You Without You, We Can Work It Out, Strawberry Fielda, Ticket to Ride, Here Comes the Sun, My Sweet Lord, Run of the Mill and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth).
Ultimately, George taught me THREE major lessons. Watch to the end to discover all three, then apply them to YOUR OWN playing and singing.

One thing you have to appreciate about George's playing is that one remembers every lick and fill on every song. You can't say that about every guitarist. It shows the class and insight of his playing.

My sense was, about that quote, that George was perhaps unconsciously comparing himself to Eric Clapton. He even remarks, in the Let It Be tapes, I think, how Eric can improvise and make it all come back to the song at the right time (or something like that). There will never ever be another Beatles. The songwriting, the chemistry, the voices, the innovations. I could go on and on and on. I'm only 68 years old, but I was 9 in 1963 when i heard something on my transistor radio that stopped me in my tracks. Then Feb. 9th 1964 came along and that was it and right up to now since Abbey Road, I've nothing as unique and music to put me, even to this day, in AWE. I was so fortunate that my ear at such a young age caught this right away. It was wonderful and every album was just the coolest experience I've ever known in my life, Thank you John, Paul, George and Ringo. George Martin to me was and always will be considered the 5th Beatle for me. We will NEVER see or hear this wonder of the world again. So kids, listen, listen, to The Beatles!!!!! When I listen to George's guitar solos in pre-Sgt Pepper Beatles songs I can't help but think of them as musical Haikus. Short, spare, perfectly constructed and often ending with an unusual twist. To solo in a 2min 30s song without becoming a showy distraction and yet still contribute an indelible part of the whole -- well that's musical poetry IMO..
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 5 месяцев назад
Musical Haikus is a GREAT way to describe George's soloing style, Jeff. I try to do exactly the same thing when I play solos - short, sweet, pithy, memorable. I especially follow this formula with my duo Cosmic Spin. Here's how I get in the right frame of mind: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7XjcLaM1nVo.html

I thought that the Beatles were best when none of the members stood out. When none of the members had a signature sound. Rather a collective sound. George's guitar work would be a prime example. Paul's vocals also come to mind.

@@kenchristie9214 That's interesting Ken. From my perspective, Day Tripper is fairly straightforward because it's in standard 4/4 time, and has a riff that repeats. MANY Beatles songs have intricate tempo changes that are much more difficult for the average musician to play.

George is a moral guitarist inside the most moral of all groups that are the Beatles. This group was at the service of the greater good, it being music. Keith Richards said to Lennon: why do you carry your guitar So high? But he so doesn’t understand that for them the guitar is just a tool,like the saw for a carpenter. Is the carpenter going to show off his saw instead of his work ? Thus thé Beatles are the greatest of musicians because they never let the saw tale precedence over the work unlike people like Jimmy Page , for instance.

Great video. I think of George not as the "quiet Beatle", but rather the "intentional Beatle". That seems to best represent his approach to his music. The older I get the more appreciative I have become of George. There are many layers to his music, and it's always rewarding to discover a "hidden" nuance when listening to him.

I was 9 years old when I first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. A transformative moment in a young boys life. For some reason I was drawn to George, and he became my favorite Beatle. His distinct image between those heavyweights, Paul and John, and how he chose to leave his personal microphone to join heads with Paul on harmonics. It changed the dynamics, and was so visually compelling. “It’s a…Beatle thing” (David Grohl).

Due to my age, I learned about the Beatles after I learned about them separately. Uncle Albert AH was my first Paul song and it just went off from there. Yellow Submarine was my first Beatles song. After discovering Norwegian Wood, it changed my life in terms of opening my eyes to a different type of sound and a darker Beatles tone. Just amazing and their music has been intrinsic to my life. All Things Must Pass really got to me. I still thrill to George’s slide guitar. Thanks for explaining his technique. ❤

Merci beaucoup. To really see George, you should watch his concert he organized with Dave Edmunds to honour Carl Perkins. I'm amazed no one on that stage was injured by Georges' smile, it was so wide.. I have a friend who played guitar with the Young Gods who took up the sitar. And an Indian player said he was playing it wrong. So he went to India to learn properly, and now plays exclusively the sitar. While he was in India, they asked him for help with mixing their records. They were amazed at the results and started calling him Mahadev, which means Young God!! I'm surprised you didn't talk about the final transition that George took in his musical life. He became a pusher man for the ukulele. He would always have several ukuleles in his car boot, since most people didn't have a ukulele to play. And then he would leave them with his friends. That's why the ukulele is seen so often at the Concert For George.

I so agree with you. I feel that way too many of today's guitarists make their guitar playing the center of their attention. But even Clapton did that! I believe that George was ALL about the music; so was John. Remember - George had to come up with a 'Lead' on very short notice, and he Always came up with something memorable! I think George was one of the greatest guitarist that we've ever experienced! In Heaven, he's still entertaining. Oh - I also see too many of today's guitarist strum an acoustic like they're a member of the 'Who'! Long-strokes suck!
@RobertCassard

Excellent observations, Stephen. George proved that subtlety can be "great." As for long strokes, I totally agree that they usually suck. Of course, I had fun hacking and slashing at My Sweet Lord - on rare occasions, long strokes are magic!

George was not a Hot Licks player but he had a tremendous ability to play melodic lines that seemed to magically blend in with what a particular song needed and he was able to do this song after song. Sorry if I’m repeating here, but “Heart Full of Soul” was actually Jeff Beck emulating a sitar sound with an early use of fuzz box. The Yardbirds had hired a professional sitar player for the song, but the group wasn’t happy with the results and Beck came up with the sitar-influenced version we hear in the final release. Hearing the earlier versions with the actual sitar, I feel Beck’s version goes better with the song, as well as just being awesome in general! Thank you for this great overview of Harrison’s oeuvre! The whole group was extremely talented at producing the right notes to accompany the song. As a drummer, I was always blown away by Ringo’s brilliant backbeat choices and fills (lefty playing as a righty!). And I didn’t know until a few years ago that McCartney played the mind-blowing solo on “Taxman”! Had always assumed it was Harrison since it was his song!

Not a guitar player, but fascinated with The Beatles sound and your videos for John’s playing and George’s playing. I had read that on Nowhere Man, it was the first recording that both John and George used their new Fender Stratocaster guitars. So I assumed George was playing a 6 string. But George’s solo does sound 12 string-ish.

Interesting about the Strats on Nowhere Man. I don't hear any. I hear John strumming away on his Gibson J-160e acoustic. All the electric parts sound like George's Rickenbacker 12-String. You can hear the higher-octave strings.

@@RobertCassardI knew I’d read it somewhere. I checked. It’s page 157 of the book “Beatles gear” by Andy Babiuk. It quotes George saying “I played it (Strat) a lot on that album (Rubber Soul)…the solo on “Nowhere Man” which John and I both played in unison”. John and George sent Mal Evan’s out to get two Strats, and he came back with two pale blue ones. He pulled the quote from Ray Minhinnett & Bob Young “The Story of the Fender Stratocaster” (Miller Freeman 1995).

Yep, I came across the same info, thanks. Apparently, they wanted an intensely bright sound so they maxed out the treble on the guitar channel of the mixing board. Here's a question - If you play an instrument in the Greatest and most Influential MUSICAL and ARTISTIC group of the 20th century, could you possibly be NOT GOOD? And at that point does a "Rating" even matter? The equation does NOT work that way. If the goal of making sounds on an instrument is to have people hear them (Billions of ears no doubt have heard Harrison's) and LIKE them (Greatest sales records still stand),....then there is NO WAY he can be 'meh'. Another goal is to be creatively groundbreaking, Harrison and The Beatles changed the course of popular music, injecting ART into it. The proof is in the pudding dude. The facts judge themselves.
