Funny thing about all the hateful comment. They come from people that couldn’t afford to buy one in the first place. If they can afford one they realised they wasted money on a hilux or new land cruiser with 30 year old technology.
got the cannon x from a hilux... value for money is just too good 10 year warranty 7 year cap service 7 year on-road service nah... not many can offer that at under 40k
Great review. Put a smile on my dial. A mate of mine has a model from 2012 which various members of his family have used and abused and it's still going. I reckon this would be ok
I own a Cannon X with 30000kms. I have always been a supporter of the brand until now. I went to the dealer Autostrada in Western Australia, for a service and had them look at a minor warranty issue for a delaminating park brake button, along with recalling for the headrests to be replaced. This work was booked in over a month prior to the service date. It’s been over a year and when going to book my 30000kms service I enquired again as the the park brake and it turn out that even though the dealer told me it was warranty and would be replaced they had not even ordered the part and not submitted a warranty claim to GWM/HAVAL. Not only this they did not replace the recall item on the headrests. When I approached GWM/HAVAL HQ I was told it’s my problem and they have nothing to do with it. So basically, your on your own. Ok so you might think this is a dealer/service department issue but can you imagine if this was a larger warranty issue and this was the support you expect to receive. I was going to look at a new vehicle next year and I can be sure GWM/HAVAL are off the list. Warranty support is critical to me and this seals the deal. Thanks for no support GWM/HAVAL, if warranty is important to you seriously consider other brands, as GWM/HAVAL do not provide customer support.
Part reason why GVM and LDV sell so well as they are able to supply utes not a 12 month wait a lot of tradies can't wait 12 months so they take what's available.and there starting to blow that Toyota myths of reliability because a lot owners experience has been positive
So there's a made in China chip shortage preventing vehicles from being made and made in China vehicles for export don't seem to be affected. Nothing to see here, move along.
@@theslimeylimey Most of the chip problems you allude to is manufacturing outside of china.. and if the Chinese are making chips, wouldn't you prioritize or your own countries demands first? Not all other countries are stupid like the Australian Government where they export everything ignoring their own population. I bet you voted for Scott Morrison.
I mean if they can put a space station into space and a rover on mars…and I dunno make everything in our houses, Iam sure the Chinese can manage to build a pretty good Ute
One thing I'd be endeavouring to find out is the spare parts ability for any vehicle I'm thinking of purchasing new, especially a Chinese made one. If there is a good local spare parts supply then they're probably okay but if spares need to be sourced from China or they're not available at all I'd be inclined to steer away from it. Generally dealers and after market parts stores don't stock spares for vehicles that sell in low volumes.
No, it's already that way now. Chinese cars shit on Korean and Japanese and are butting heads with the Germans, it's just anti-China morons who can't see it.
Ford also forgot, customer service, backing their warranty and ACCC requirement, the fact that saving $1 here and there inducing faults for their clients between 60-120k km. All just affects their reputation, future sales.... Imagine a car company that actually did everything right by the client and their product.....Man, they would be making money hand over fist, now and 10-15 yrs later...Oh what a dream I am having...lol
@@demogaming8895 yes adding usd now makes more sense. They do it because they don’t rip off their customers by expecting giant profit margins. Legacy car companies have been ripping us off for years
30K extra may not be much to a chinese like you but to many it could be the difference having a roof above their head by paying that extra 30K on a house deposit. It makes a lot of sense for average people like us to purchase a vehicle that gets the same job done as hilux for half the price. However you can logically argue with Dmax, BT50 buyers to purchase a Hilux instead as it is just fraction of cost more :)
So you get a flash-looking interior that is actually a bit shit and a slow-arse motor that can't do the job a ute needs to do. Hard pass. Just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's good value.
Realistic review. Can't disagree with much and I own a cannon X. I bought it to tow my boat and a box trailer. It does it very well and I have no issues. It's a UTE its not a racing car I don't get the issue with doing 0-100 in a Ute. It's damn comfortable, drives well and I live rural in a very hilly area. Don't ask why this is cheap, ask why is everything else such a rip off...
GWM is about to become a ubiquitous name in the world, none more so than in Australia 🇦🇺 . They produce a quality product at an unbeatable price. The others need to watch out, esp. Toyota who unbelievably in the face of such competition keep raising their prices! Well, they and most of the others are about to find out the hard way that pride truly does come before a fall. The buyers are always the final arbiter and they are always the best judge of value for money and that's fast becoming a no - brainer! $70K for a Hilux? Tell 'em they're ďreamin'!
Exactly! I don't get the (unjustified) superior attitude of some of the Japanese brands by blatantly RAISING their prices straight in the face of their competitors! I will predict here and now that they will very quickly be forced to drop the attitude and to meet their customers in their value for money expectations!
@@Davidcallard Japanese cars rest on their laurels, arrogantly claiming that their cars are reliable than chinese EV cars 🤣🤣🤣. Recently BYD has launched Atto 3 and Seal to Japan EV industry for sales. Many Japanese badmouth BYD without their driving .
Take it off road and you will be even more shocked, we drive it up on a mountain dirt road (off road) up to 800 meters altitude, carrying 8 paraglider Pilots, all the paragliding gear and it just goes up all the way doesn't even break a sweat. it is absolutely something I will take it any time. ford has no chance anymore. Chinese off roaders are getting just better and better
Yep, you can't blame the Chinese to have built a pretty damn good vehicle. It's up to the rest of the manufacturers to pic up the game but not the price.
Was going to buy one of these when they first hit the market but ended up buying a Haval Jolion for the missus, then 12 months later it was my turn bought the Cannon L and love the ute...Best value and we got 2 cars cheaper than 1 Hilux or Ranger.... Best value and drives great..Go the Chinese Cars..Great review Matt....
@@westmeadboi4915 , Its great mate, so far so good. reversed into a bloody wheelie bin and put a mark on the back quarter ,metal seems a bit soft but other than that I love it... Great value..
@@myfeeling4you248 , Lucky it has a 5 star rating and it crashes pretty well. Pretty sure it is meant to crush in an accident. But all G it drives nice and fits me and my family well...
Great review guys, good to see an unbiased review despite the brand’s reputation. The Cannon X is very easy to live with and actually quick once you learn how to manage the go pedal. 👍
Don't forget..this Ute has automation inbuilt.. which no other ute has.. for example you can say by pressing the voice activated button on the steering wheel ... ' yeah Tessa.. open passenger window'.. or ' hey Tessa I'm cold".. It will automatically powered down windows or turn on heating .. Very thought through design.. I have one and it works brilliantly..
After reading positive review after positive review on these GWM utes I thought it was time to check one out. First impressions, it's large to view compared to others. I then clambered in, rear seat, very spacious, not confined in any way, then passenger seat, this is anything but a ute, more saloon than ute from passenger seat prospective, finally driving seat. This just doesn't come across as a standard dual cab ute, every thing says comfort, easy reach design, my my, the interior comfort, appeal, is superior to average dual cab. Everything is so easy on the eye. I actually preferred the artificial leather of the lower models, it just was more comfy to be confined in for hours but I guess the perferated genuine leather would breath better on long hot days. Whilst I'm not after a dual cab, this would certainly be a contender for my money. Understand the positive reviews now. NB. Tried LDV also as at same dealership. There was zero comparison, the LDV is a typical dual cab, not a saloon as the GWM.
@@badgesnob6239agreed. well they have improved alot over last 5 years. You are talking about the times before 2015.....so your comment makes sense fully but not that much now.
having owned my 22 x model for 6 months love it cant fault it so far . lil tip for anyone you has one .USE the voice assist it can do soooo much , from turning the A/C on to changing radio , turning the heated seats on , rolling the windows up or down to any position . and more its so good
2.5 years of ownership, zero issues. Does anything I throw at it from long trips, towing..you name it. If you buy into the advertising bias, it's your loss.
I prefer your reviews over anyone else’s cause you guys say it as it is, but I look forward to you guys getting back into fast cars! If you can, could you guys do a full review on with the Volvo XC60 B6 or the XC 90 B6 really keen to get your thoughts on them ! You guys are the best
I brought a new great wall steed through the company I work for . I was offered a certain amount to buy a truck . I could of had a five year old ford or Toyota . I didn't want the hassle of a second hand one having MOTs etc so I had a great wall. I didn't have much trouble with it other than the reverse switch in the gearbox and the water in the diesel sensor in the filter. It was a 2012 year . When it went for the first MOT the inspector said that the chassis was the cleanest rust free truck he had ever had in the test centre. He said usually a ford , Toyota, Nissan are rusting out . He had a 2015 Ranger in there and it was covered in rust underneath. Only sold the truck when it was eight years old as needed a van . So there's not much wrong with a Great wall Steed except it's like going back in time for the way it drives as it can be hard work compared to modern trucks .
It's one thing buying a phone or an iPad that's assembled in China (by an American owned company), it's another thing buying a 40k plus car, owned by the CCP that probably comes with some complimentary listening devices...
I love the Cannon even though I bought a Triton. It was touch and go for these two for a few months. Ranger, Hilux etc didn’t get a look in due to their ridiculous pricing. The Triton won out on availability of spare parts in out of the way places. Nothing more.
so many people have no idea in these comments. mine has done 40k and I have driven tele track, old coach road, Bloomfield, creb track. and not a single issue lol
Had our Cannon X for over 13 months now and not one issue with it. Great car for the money, looking forward to trading up to the GWM Tank 500 when that lands next year.
Well you got my attention, any notable mods done prior, tyres, snorkel etc? Keen to read your response. Similar story below of a non recognised vehicle that was surprisingly capable. I once led a trip to the Cape including Bloomfield, Lakelands, Frenchman's & tele track with a Hyundai Terracan driven by a recently widowed 68 virgin 4WD chap following. Prior to going I insisted he had a snorkel and BFG all terrain minimal installed before tagging along. He even found a supplier of a 40mm lift, he was real keen to tag along I've got to tell ya. That Terracan surprised the hell out of highly modified 4WD owners. That Terracan in the hands of a total novice just followed us everywhere we went, the Pascoe & Wenlock deep water crossings, Nolan's Brook, he tackled and achieved everything we did BUT he did bypass gunshot as he didn't have the nerve to drop his Terracan down a vertical drop, understandably. He got such a thrill from his initial 4WD adventure he returned to Sydney and traded the Terracan on a brand smacking new 200 series, had mods installed and the headed of to do Warburton track, Canning Stock Route. Did he get the bug or what. Oh, Handy to have money, ha.
@ianweal3081 I have 2 inch lift bfgoodrich 275/7017s snorkel diff breathers and that's really it other then my full 12v system and canopy bullbar winch etc
@natebrindabella4507 but I also have owned a 105 series landcrusier (489,000km) which I was constantly doing hand brake adjustments or wheel bearings or seals you have to be constantly tinkering to keep the old girls running well. my ute is maintenance free
All this vehicle needs to kick the others in the bum is 4h on sealed surfaces, slight interior update get rid of the tacky silver trim on the dash and fans ,make it black! And exterior just needs a black edition and then this will kill it! I’d buy one with those simple changes
Lots of people like these, lots of people like rangers and toyotas, its called freedom of choice I am on my second ranger and i love it the only thing that concerns about the great wall is people are still wary of them and that may affect resale value time will tell
Great review, Id love to see you load it up with some real weight and see how it performs. Many ute owners are going to be carrying a canopy, tools, fridges or just materials and that can be make or break for a real workhorse.
Finally a non biased unpaid review. Until someone drives one and compares it to other mainstream brands. People won’t understand how good these rigs are for the money.
It's new, Do this review at 500,000 Km like you would a Hilux. No talk about it at 300,000Km. Then talk about it after use on a farm. But I have no doubt it makes a good mall crawler
Ford? Promised the best and delivered a whole new batch of mechanical issues, such as vibrating tail shafts, with owners having to return for work. Then there’s the promised F150 return, crickets chirping 😢
Know 3 people who work for GWM, no slave labour they actually treat their 68000 employees very well . they are regarded as one of the top 3 manufacturing companies in the world
I'm seriously considering buying one . Especially now they are $5000 cheaper until the end of September. I have heard a whisper that GWM is upgrading the engine to the 2.4 from the Alfa. Is this true?
Idk about the 2.4 but what i can say is the 2L is genuinely sufficient. I got one last week and you really don't need it if you're driving at regular speed. I liked the discount more than the extra power.
Good luck sourcing parts, the dealers can’t even get correct part codes. Can’t wait to see how many are rusted out, have delaminated plastics and falling apart in general give them 5 years max
To be honest, thats sounds like the new ranger. Know of atleast 2 ppl that have had major rust issues. SO much so Ford, on the quiet, have taken ute back, completely disassembled and started the treatment process from scratch. Yes I have test driven the ranger love it. Want one. Will just wait another 18mths for the manufacturing process to be sorted out...lol
You forget that China is the biggest car market in the world where GWM has to compete with Toyotas and Fords locally. Their cars are tried and tested in the real world before they even consider exporting them to overseas markets like Australia.
Yes one of biggest gripes is the lack of gas struts aiding the bonnet & tailgate 😤 It probably costs the manufacturers $10…..add $20 to the price…..jeees 🤦
@@flex20144 I just asked you a question. I guess based on that answer we won't see you back to correct your 'Statement or Suggestion' if you are wrong.
Drive a cannon and a ranger back to back and then see where the price difference is. If you can’t afford a ford or Toyota it’s probably the pick… it just the “will it last” thing that haunts..
The power and torque is more than enough for a work truck. If you want a sport’s car, get a sports car. I am just as happy driving my 2.2 litre 150hp Ranger as I am with my new 2.0 Bi-turbo with ten speeds. The main benefit of the new high power vehicle is that it uses about 20% less fuel per mile and that it does away with the drastic lethargy of the old 2.2 away from idle and a stop. This lethargy is due to the emission control equipment on the 2.2 that reduces soot through reducing fuel before the turbo spools up. I believe that the Cannon has the same affliction. Yes I must admit that I would not buy it because it is Chinese and the CCP are aggressive in their ambition to destroy western democratic economies. Nothing against the Chinese people.
Perhaps “welcome to the future “ Perhaps, a bunch of Leyland P76ers Could go iether way folks! I would be givn it a while b4 jumpn on board, ee will see, i reckon, in next 2 or so years. By thaf time they may not be $$10-15k or more under the competition
And even better guys on the 2023 Shanhai Cannon Poer Ute, where it's interior can be had in the Cream and Blue same plush interior as the GWM Tank 500, which truly resembles the interior of a Bentley Mulsanne, seemingly like a direct copy, all wrapped in sumptuous Nappa leather, and still priced below a Ford Ranger etc. ...
I'm driving a 2014 dmax, I purchased it with 180k.on the clock... it's still perfect! I work it hard every day pulling 2 ton trade trailer. Will this budget car be the same after 10 years??
In my opinion if you’re on a budget good buy by if you can afford a hilux or ford then it’s obvious ! Give GWM a few years they will knock other brands out the park .
