A smart approach to laying out a riparian forest buffer is to flag the location for each tree a couple of weeks prior to planting. This way you guarantee enough space between rows for mowing, give the landowner an opportunity to consider the layout before the trees go in the ground, and serves as a last check for any needed site prep.
In this Riparian Restoration 101, Ryan Davis, Pennsylvania Forest Program Manager, shares his process for flagging a site, and how to accommodate for existing tree cover and site topography.
