Yes, it is slow, but slow in the way that “Vertigo” is slow. Definitely worth watching. Scott will win big awards. His performance is a tour de force.

Love that comparison to Vertigo and I think there is a very Hitchcockian feel to this version of Ripley. The scene with the disguise and the Caravaggio parallels was priceless.

I really enjoyed this version! The movie made it seem that Tom got away with everything so easily. This series demonstrated the difficulty and made the peril feel all the more real. His desperation was shown as he moved from place to place and the accommodations became smaller and smaller, from luxury to bare bones. Dakota did a lot with her expressions given the little dialogue she had. I could feel her thinking. The slow pace I think was to immerse the viewer in the setting, because as you said, this is the lifestyle of Italy. The cinematography was outstanding and every frame looked like a photograph. I found it an interesting choice for the only color to be the cat's paw prints.

Well he still kindof got away with it in this one too. I was hoping for a bigger pay off than just that picture of dickie in the book. That made no sense btw, why would marge send her book to that cop she didn't even like.

This is great movie aesthetically and the use of cine-noire is great. Scott is an excellent actor but his interpretation of Tom Ripley comes across as more of a Norman Bates than a Ripley. In the end, as a viewer, the plausibility of Dickie actually welcoming a psycho like Ripley into his home seems really unlikely. This unbelievability limits the enjoyment of the series.

I've read the Ripley books and seen all the films made on this character and I really ,loved this version. The American Friend is another wonderful Ripley film with Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper as Ripley.

In an age that demands retention editing, car chases and instant gratification, the slow burn and understated approach is not to all tastes. It is to mine. Every frame is a painting, breathtaking composition and lighting is worth watching alone.

I think that this may be just the beginning of trying to adapt all of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley books.

@geraldoleary1259

Why do most reviewers (as here) refer to only two 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' versions? There are 3. The original was made in 1960. Plein Soleil or Purple Moon in English. (And a few other adaptations from other Ripley books). It must be a generational thing as I notice younger reviewers go on about slow pacing, black and white cinematography as negatives. Books take time and are in black and white....why shouldn't films sometimes exude the same quality. I found this version quite brilliant, to be honest. One or two quibbles but overall a tour de force with nods to Hitchcock and Fellini and some sly subtle humour throughout. I read the book many moons ago, and this really gets closer storywise. I love all three screen versions.

So much going on with this series. I'm watching it for the second time before I do my online review. Some key things I noted the first time I watched it. There is a degree of homo-erotic tension between Dickie and Tom but neither one seems overly interested in pursuing it. Marge becomes the interloper between the two and later on when she realizes that Dickie is gone...I almost felt like she was looking to latch onto Tom as at least Dickie's temporary replacement (she did leave her bedroom door open as she was sleeping nude in plain view of Tom in episode eight). The statues and animals always seem to be impartial observers to Tom's actions and crimes, yet they pass no judgement. Tom started out as a total loser but when he saw this opportunity open up, he took it and he made something bigger out of it than he ever anticipated. In this sense Tom became a master at his game to the point of being able to even cleverly manipulate several Italian detectives into making them think his truth is the absolute truth. The cameo by John Malkovich was pretty clever too, especially if you have seen the film Ripley's Game (2004)

I watched the movie, I enjoyed it very much. I am 4 episode into the series, it has a few eye candies that draw the viewers, 1. Italy, 2. Italy in Black and White, very much like watching the famous films La Dolce Vita & 8 1/2 style, 3, the cinematography is just beautiful.

Thank you. I agree with you. I think the black and white was unnecessary and detracted. Perhaps they could have done sequences in bl n wh, to emphasise a particular scene, but 8 hours of it was too much. Better to use that in a city setting, or something set in the 1940s. IMO.

I loved the film. It is difficult to compare the two. But as others have commented this IS the book, apart from the Caravaggio thread which added beauty and was appropriate. Perhaps one third of the film ihas nothing to do with Patricia Highsmith. The Cate Blanchett character, the Italian fling by Dickie and the pregnancy, the homexual aspect which Highsmith only alluded to and that third murder and the homosexual relationship are all introduced by the director. Netflix would never create something of this quality but are taking the credit. It was made by Showtime in 2021 and they had to sell off a lot of their stock and sold it to Netflix for a song apparently. It is amazing but I am 80 so am used to having to think.

I haven't read the book (read some other books by this author, but very long time ago), but watched the movie. I never had plans to watch this, because as you said the movie was good enough, and I didn't feel the material itself was that deep or interesting to warrant a series. But, I was curious to hear thoughts neverthless.

I'm three episodes in and deciding whether to keep sinking time into this slog fest. The 1999 movie was perfect, gripping, and perfectly cast, and acted. This version is terribly cast. Some 40 year olds trying to play 20 year olds? An almost 50 year old Ripley is recruited cause, [not kidding]: the father wants him to talk his 40 year old son into coming home for no particular reason. Why Tom? Well, he heard Tom knew his son, even though they hadn't even met, doesn't know where Tom is, hires a PI to track down this nobody with no relation and the PI couldn't even confirm that detail!?) It just doesn't work and so off putting, all you can think of are these bizarre plot holes that are consuming your entire mental bandwidth that you're ignoring the nothingness transpiring on screen... Also, Philip Seymour Hoffman's 1999 performance is one of my all time favorites and they decide to gender swap his character with a zero charisma woman? Why? They still call the character "Freddy", yet her performance is nails on a chalkboard cringe. The dialogue and characters are so boring and forgettable that you really end up not caring what happens next. All in all, this version is a fail on all fronts besides the beautifully shot cinematography. Skip it, and just watch the 1999 classic.
