The Mamma Mia musical show and movies were not first before ABBA. ABBA is a Swedish pop group that was active from 1972 to 1982, and their music became internationally famous during that time. The musical, Mamma Mia, premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre in London, UK on April 6, 1999, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Abba winning Eurovision with the song "Waterloo", from their 1974 album of the same title. The Mamma Mia movies, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, were released much later, with the first film in 2008 and the sequel in 2018. They feature ABBA's music as part of their storyline, but the band's music existed long before the musical and movies. 40 years after ABBA's hiatus, the band returned to the spotlight with their 9th and last album, Voyage.
