I finally finished my “996” turbo engine drop and transmission split gasket fix. Chased the same rabbits. Did my road test 3 days ago. Super happy, but got a break light failure. Did everything new turbos , coil over suspension, water pump plugs ignition coil overs everything. Loved watching your videos! Really wished you had the facilities to drop the motor though. The entire time I’m like dude! Just drop the damn thing and do everything! Lol.
Coilover suggestion: Feal 441+.. Just installed these on my 997 and no complaints yet. Budget friendly, modular, height adjustable via threaded body, and comfortable. A lot of 996 guys seem to run these too.
You may want to consider idling the car for about 2 min before you shut it off, that helps reduce the amount of oil smoke at initial cold start up. (turbo related).
Camera sliders are definitely cool, and I'm excited that you get to play around with one. They're really good for time lapses, but also beauty shots of the car. You can pan to the side, go up or down, or zoom-in/out. It gets really interesting when you get into curved sliders. Imagine doing a curved beauty shot around the car or interior. Your camera quality & lighting is definitely top notch.
Hey Matt. Love the videos. Your window motor acts like weak ground. Perform a loaded voltage drop test at the motor on each line to find source. Good luck. Keep ‘em coming.
I wonder if you could disconnect the motor for the passenger side window and using a multimeter measure the resistance of the motor in ohms through the two leads connected to the motor. You can then compare that reading with the driver's side or known good reading to see if the motor is ok. I guess a noticeably higher resistance reading would indicate problems on the motor.
Handy tip for when you forget which side of the car to re-fuel - on most cars, the dash fuel bowser icon has the pump handle pointing to the correct side
I put KW v3 coilovers on my 2000 C2 when my stock suspension pretty much gave out. The adjustability to me was worth the price. It can be dialed in as soft or stiff as you’d ever need. Expensive but great option.
Oh my, I held my breath when you had the trans and half of the weight of the engine hanging on the aluminium cross support and dived under it with your chest
Never trusted the shallow cup holders on my 2002 or 2009 anyway, so I have an Amazon dual cup holder that wedges between the console and passenger seat.
So glad it’s coming together. I hope you don’t regret those poly mounts. They can be very squeaky in street applications. I wish I could offer up some solutions for the window. I have a buddy who deals in Porsche and works on them regularly. I’ll check with him to see if he has any ideas. Let me know how you like the atoto radio.
Try the FEAL coilovers 441+. Get the radial bearing upgrade. They have great reviews on the forums and lots of 996 guys buy them. They are comparable to Ohlins but priced much more reasonably.
Really nice all the cameras angle, while the driving, in the garage and even in the room when editing. lot of work that makes the videos really enjoyable Good to see the 996 finally driving, keep it up! I hope get the likes i want that car screaming !
The only coilovers I've experienced on a Porsche are Bilstein, but they are a lovely street setup. Easy to adjust, and they ride smoother than OEM in most situations.
I would agree. I’ve had Bilstein coilovers in an E36 bmw and on my 981 Porsche. The improved feel and ride quality they provide is noticeably better than any other brand I’ve tried
Great job! Must be so satisfying after all the work dumped into it also a tip I saw on another channel is you can put bushings in the freezer to make them easier to slide in, cause they shrink. Never tried it myself, but there you go
Wanted to comment about the suspension. I recentl bought oe of your shirts for my father also. He has a 2002 996 and put bilstein coilovers and camber arms as well and the car rides better than stock, way more comfortable also.
I found your channel since you bought the 996 I’ve subscribed since then, been loving the content. As for coilover suggestions I recommend ohlins road and track, or kw variant 3. I work at a porsche dealership and customers that track their 996s tend to prefer kws, and people with more street oriented applications prefer ohlins.
Matt, great video again. Your editing is getting really strong. I like that slider, I may pick one up myself. Speaking of picking something up. I figured you couldn't have all the fun working on a clapped out 996 Turbo that I decided to join "Team Misery" and work on my own 2005 996... TURBO S. Since my current 996 project is wrapping up I thought it would be sweet to stay in the family and rescue yet another Porsche of this era. I went with Fabspeed, btw, on my current 996 and it sounds AMAZING with NO DRONE.
@@matt13ross A 997.1 roller was my second option. I would have taken the engine I rebuilt, on my channel, and plugged it in! Oh well having a 996tt isn’t a bad option to have.
Glad to see that you are making progress. They are expensive to keep in top working order, but great fun to drive. I have had 911’s and now my DD is a ‘95 968 cabriolet 6 speed. There are few cars that are more enjoyable to drive than a sorted out Porsche!
PS if you have a pending fault or active fault (depending on fault) it will hold back boost (.4 I believe). At .7+ bar she should feel pretty darn fast.
Hallo Matt, love thé Porsche content on your channel! After all the work you can finally drive the 996. 💪 I would go for the Bilstein or KW coilovers. Cheers dude!
With this platform you really need to be careful on the exhaust you get. Titanium may not translate the way you hope (BAD drone is the main issue with 99% of the aftermarket exhausts). With your setup, you cannot go wrong with a Kline or BBi exhaust. KW V3 for coilovers (especially for the street).
KW Varient or RUF tuned Bilstein coilovers - both will make a Massive difference. Just get the exhaust, don't need the likes to write it off to the taxes, unless you are tagging an exhaust company to get it provided for free or at a discount:)
@@matt13ross Oh I support it, I agree it sounds way to cheap for such a nice car. Hell at this point a stock Miata sounds better, if that don't motivate you I don't know what will;-)
1. Exhaust doesn't need to be titanium, just get a good brand and preferably valved. Fabspeed, Soul, Capristo. 2. Suspension--Bilstein will probably do. Beyond that, Ohlins, then JRZ. Here's your like, now fix your window and get that thing painted 1 color!
Get a speedtech exhaust, you won't regret it,Sounds like a gt3 at wide open throttle. There are videos of it online so you can compare it to other exhaust. I got kw v1 on my turbo and if your not gonna track it then thats all you really need. That check engine light will default your dme and will not get full boost.
Would recommend ohlins, I have kwv3 on my turbo and ohlins r/t on my E90 M3 and the kws are def more harsh. Ohlins handle great and still ride really nicely
Should feel very fast lol. Stock these can do 0-60 in 3.7. With a manual! In gear acceleration is up there with a lot of modern performance cars and quicker than many.
How's the power band now you have no vacuum leaks? Try the gun do hack on the exhaust first. Very cheap mode with much improved sound. I think I spent $300 getting mine done. Update ….My bad Gundo hack not suitable for a turbo
I bought KW coilovers for my 996 carrera 2, they're really high quality and the ride quality is damn nice. They are harder from stock but I only notice it when going over bumps.
Not sure if your trickle charger has something similar available, but my ctek has a "comfort connect" (quick connect) pigtail available for trickle charging vehicles - super handy vs alligator clips to terminals.
Keep it up Matt, great content. For Coilovers I would go with something tested in the Porsche community. What about KW Variant 1 which gives the lowering ability and it doesn'b break the bank. PSS10 I feel it would be too harsh for daily driving.
I don't know if you've said you've tried this or not. For your window, unplug the wire connector going to the window, and connect a multi-meter to the positive pole of the plug and the negative. Operate the switch and see if there's a disturbance in voltage in operation that mimics your issue. If that's good, leave the negative pole connected, and touch the positive pole from the multi-meter on a good ground somewhere off the door. Measure the resistance to ohms, while operating the switch on the window. If there's more than I think it's 7 or 8 ohms, then you have a bad ground. If both those look good, that window motor may have a built in feature where it cuts off if it thinks the window is jammed. So lookat the window channels and see if you can make the window go up and down smoother. I'm also assuming the ground is fed to the motor from the wires, but the ground could be a though bolt connected the motor to the door. If that's the case, make sure the threaded holes on the door aren't corroded or painted, and same thing with the door grounding to the body.
buddy, i subbed too you last year and back then u had just bought the car, this is a blast! your content is quality, pure quality and im so happy i found you. you inspire me too do this my self, buy an old classic and have a blast with. thanks Matt, really. you didnt have too do this, but you are and i can say from not just me, that we appriciate it, you and the content you provide. but mostly, i would say its you. you and that shit humor of your's that makes this so... old school good, its not polished, its goofy editing, puns, and all that, that makes you... you i guess. and thats quality. you remind me of old youtube, and that my friend, is a compliment, cheers from norway! - Peter
Time to LS swap the 996! Just kidding did Luke the 50 shades of yellow! Probably all the looks a the parts store. Gave you a like, hope you get the other 2999 to meet you challenge. As always looking foward to the next.
Can we get a baseline Dyno before any more mods? be good to look back at how far its come and might help let you know how healthy the engine is compared to new.
have you considered getting the car wrapped? The cost is far less than a complete respray... the window issue, have you checked the wires where the transfer from the door to the frame of the car to see if the wires are damaged/broken? The car is nearly ready to daily, great job.
big CONGRATS @Matt13Ross !! This is definitely inspiring and educational! I hope this car appreciates for you! You you gave it the TLC and worthy upgrades. Vid like of course ;)
You should get a body or head mount to wear for the GoPro to get a cool POV perspective while you're driving the car, I always think it's a really satisfying angle!!
Any X pipe style exhaust will drone especially if it you opt for no cats. That unfortunately is the style most companies go with for the 996 turbo. I would skip the TI as there is no benefit other than weight. Based on the driving videos you need a tune and exhaust that will wake the car up big time. Markski Tuning is awesome for both and is a wealth of knowledge on porsche turbo models especially the 996. As for suspension i have the one rennkit offers made by border great for twisty roads and comfortable to cruise with, plus it can handle the once a year track day.
Resonators and helmholtz tubes are the key to avoiding drone. I'm 3" catless xpipe with Resonators and helmholtz tubes on my 997.1 turbo and I have next to zero drone
